I suggest also looking at the Recruiting Office here on these boards. There are quite a few pbem Traveller games out there (such as at this site) and some games run over internet chat like IRC as well*.
I've found CT to be nigh seamless as you can get for a dice based "realistic" RPG online as a player. I suspect as a GM it would however involve a spreadsheet or other compilation of the tasks and combat matrix and use of one of the streamlined task systems for CT out there.
T20 is IMO worth a look as well. using CT as it's model. Start with T20 lite and the other free materials here. At the least a lot of the material aside from the main book is useable with little to no modification in a CT game. I've found as both a player and GM T20 doesn't run as seamless as CT in an online game.
The other versions of Traveller are IMO good as resources if nothing else IMO.
Keep on grinning and have fun!
