why we love ct

I suggest also looking at the Recruiting Office here on these boards. There are quite a few pbem Traveller games out there (such as at this site) and some games run over internet chat like IRC as well*.

I've found CT to be nigh seamless as you can get for a dice based "realistic" RPG online as a player. I suspect as a GM it would however involve a spreadsheet or other compilation of the tasks and combat matrix and use of one of the streamlined task systems for CT out there.

T20 is IMO worth a look as well. using CT as it's model. Start with T20 lite and the other free materials here. At the least a lot of the material aside from the main book is useable with little to no modification in a CT game. I've found as both a player and GM T20 doesn't run as seamless as CT in an online game.

The other versions of Traveller are IMO good as resources if nothing else IMO.

Keep on grinning and have fun! :D

Except for a task system of its own, a consolidated skills list, a consolidated weapons list, consolidated career list, etc. ;)

Sorry, couldn't resist.

While I can agree that the underlying simplicity and versatility of CT is a strength, the various other versions do add something to the basic game.
MT is very much CT consolidated with a "new" task system, new combat rules, new experience rules etc.
TNE gave us the best gearhead book ever ;) (IMHO).

I find the simplicity actually helps with an RPG
, the less number of thhings to check the smoother the game.

Hence the superiority of the DGP (or even BITS) task system over checking though loads of supplements for all the modifiers to a particular skill roll.
CT + the DGP task system is difficult to beat from a simple but elegant point of view, IMHO ;)

////Except for a task system of its own, a consolidated skills list, a consolidated weapons list, consolidated career list, etc.////

CT has all of that. task system??? gm uses common sence and tells you what to roll and what skill or attribute can be used to modify the roll. thats all the task system you will ever need.

as for consolidation...maybe that would be nice but its not really required. my campaign plays using books 1,2,3 and we have a blast.

btw I just picked up a few ffe000 books and boy are they handy.

basically it is my belief that in rpgs less is more, more numbers means more min/maxing more meta gaming and less actual rping and fun.

of course this is just my opinion, everyone has one and they all smell like falucin groat dung.

To me, Traveller is all about the setting rather than the rule mechanics. CT appeals to me because the mechanics are so shockingly simple.
It's all about the setting, because you can unleash your imagination and roleplay without being restricted by phalanxes of tables and legions of rulebooks.
Which is, ironically why I like QLI offerings. The setting material is completely compatible with CT - even all the starships are completely compatible with High Guard. How utterly awesome.
