Ending the Rebellion or restarting it differently

Bill, Sadly, I only have three paragraphs from the Rebellion Sourcebook to go on, and they don't mention anything about dying on Dlani soil. My Traveller-fu is weak :(

2-4601, IMTU the Solomani are much more belligerant, and have a "Manifest Destiny" to dominate what was once the Rule of Man. It makes any alliance, especially one that encourages Solomani fleets to operate outside the Sphere, risky.

However, an Ilelish/Solomani alliance in SETU (Someone-Else's Traveller Universe) would be a really scary-powerful force. Lucan suddenly would have a real two-front war on his hands and he'd handle it with all of the grace and skill of Adolph Hitler following the invasion of Normandy. I'm certain Diabei would cut some sort of deal to prevent being steamrolled.

Stei'awtliyrl,

I'm working off memory here, most of my stuff is two states away.

There may have been information concerning Virasa in GDW's Challenge. I do remember a brief mention of it in DGP's Traveller Digest. The article was called something like In Defense of Emperor Dulinor and was written 'in-character'. The 'author' was answering and refuting several charges levied against Dulinor. One charge concered his black clothing and the 'author' explained a little about Virasa in their response.

I do remember that the bulk of the material concerning the religion appeared as TNS news items in The Survival Margin and elsewhere. Several TNS items cover the lead up to and results of the Virasa "Council of Nicaea". (IIRC, it was termed a 'convocation' and it was not the first one called in the history of that faith either.)

The TNS news items made it clear that a substantial portion of the faith did not agree with the changes made during the convocation and most of them suspected Dulinor with pressuring the Virasaa heirarchy to make the changes.

Again, my memory could very well be wrong but I can't shake the feeling that members of the faith had travel restrictions laid upon them along with the 'non-violent' death prohibition.

All this is moot however. Because it is your setting Virasa can be whatever you need it to be. Nothing else matters.

My Traveller-fu is weak :(
That is a good thing. It means YTU has more of 'you' in it.

Have fun,
Bill

In an answer to the thread's title Ending the rebellion, or Restarting it differently"
(Apologies, its a long one)

The joint take myself and two of three other Co-GM's of our Ursula campaign was this, in light of things we had done in our "ATU", to include adding a race of aliens, the D'Kelva (created by Co-GM Bryan Gibson, those unfamiliar with these, please use search mode on this forum), and the player's uncovering, exposing to MoJ & the Emperor (by way of the MoJ-we did not let the player's go see Strephon) the genocide planned for them by the Island States of the Reft (our fractious six worlds of the Trillion Credit Squadron fame) Sansterre, St. Genevieve, Colchis, Amondiage, etc.

Our villain was the Duke of Cyril, a handpicked noble of Archduke Dulinor's. While the 5th Frontier War dominated news headlines elsewheres (the plot was uncovered on the eve of the FFW early in 1105), the events transpiring because of our players actions resulted in this one race's being saved, and all Imperial forces involved in supporting this clandestine "war" were recalled.

After their subsequent "war of Vengeance" the D'ekelva conquered the Island States, and governed the Humans there afterwards, as they would raise their own children (leading later to D'kelvan culturally minded humans).

Offstge from the players the MoJ following those involved in the conspiracy went up and down the chain of command. The Duke of Cyril's wife, a lesser heiress of the Tukera Family, committed suicide. The plan to make a Trans Reft Corporation Freight line to Deneb and bypass the Corridor route was forever scuttled.

Investors lost billions of credits. It was the Enron-scandal of its day, with plenty of folks looking "for heads on platters", to say the least, what the D'Kelva wanted of those who'd tried to exterminate them with the aide of the Islanders.

Former Imperial Navy personnel involved were tried and convicted, and sentenced to death. Genocide in our ATU having no statute of limitations. The trail led back to Dulinor himself, who while not personally involved, was tacitly aware of what is subsector Duke was up to.

Dulinor, disgraced, was given "the honorable way out", and used his magnum revolver on himself, in 1111.

All four of us agreed.

So--we needn't have a Rebellion afterwards, or Virus as the main Villain is dead, right?

WRONG, three of us said, and concocted the following:

As most here can adhere to, the Third Imperium was by 1116 ready for the event that would "make the spokes fly off the wheel", yes?

So, the three of us altered the villain of the piece to enlarge Prince Lucan, and the Ine Givar Terrorist Organization.

1.) First, Dulinor's daughter Isis, while found clear of wrongdoing resented the fact his Archduchy of the Domain of Ilelish was placed under Strephon's Gushemege Ducal Brother-in-Law (Iphegenia's brother). Whatever fiefdom's she had by way of her mother she retained in reduced form (She was reduced to a subsector Duchess on Dlan).
In delivering the Emperor's message "fall on your sword", Prince Lucan is sent as an Imperial envoy to the Archduke. Isis will not forget that day..

2.) In 1115 The Solomani Confederation begin their plot to retake Terra. They used their SolSec contacts within the ambassadorial chambers on Capital to sound out Prince Lucan as the most ambitious of the twins, and offered him aide to seize the throne.

3.) In our ATU setting Ine Givar is not relegated to Just Spinward marches, Tobia, & Deneb. It is the 'Al Quaeda' of the 3rd Imperium, with splinter cells with regional names, in a mirror-image of our present day world. SolSec, the Zhodani Consulate, Some major Anti-Imperial Vargr states, even the Julian League's Intelligence branch have ways and means of using them/ funding them to keep the 3rd Imperium off balance.

1115-1117-The SolSec keep stoking the fires of rebelliousness of the Old Expanses region, and prepare for their actual invasion.

132-1116 The Imperial regiment on Palace Guard at the throne room is the Solomani Regiment. The Solomani Ambassador has been rplaced by an Ine-Givar body double, who performs the deed then blows himself up, killing Strephon, the Aslan Ambassador, etc etal.

Lucan is trying to woo Varian's babe to be his (to be empress) when Varian comes into the scene..Cain and Abel all over again, dame gets killed, LT. Windhook the witness, flees to Deneb.
Lucan seizes power, dismisses Moot. He also begins removing "Strephon's Men", folks appointed by the former emperor and not loyal to him.

Isis Dulinor seeing Lucan as emperor, decides to take matters into her own hands, and with her Imperial Navy uncle's help has Strephon's Brother-in-law killed, and seizes the Archduchy herself-1117. This helped her, and spared Lucan from killing him off anyways.

Strephon "reappeared", not in 1118 but mid 1117, adding to the confusion. Knowing Windhook was a loose end, & Lucan suspecting Windhook found the "real" Strephon & alerted Norris judging from what his Navy Intel guys could surmise, He knew that twice in Imperial History a New Emperor has rallied the Marches and sailed for Capital. Lucan may not have been tactically wise, but he knew his lessons growing up. Having Archduke Norris & Strephon Both after him he could not have.

Thus he called forth the Corridor & Old Expanses Sector Fleets to be sent to Gushemege to stop this pretender.

The Solomani execute their Invasion on 001-1118.
Lucan of course declares war! And discovers the perfidy of the Solomani when The Expanses capitulates without very much of a fight, leaving Archduchess Margaret's Navy assets to cover the "flank". The Duke of Sol, of course calls for aide, remaining loyal to Lucan. Lucan ordered the Lishun Fleet to the Rim to shore up what by then was about to be lost.

The Vargr Hordes invade as scheduled once the Corridor & Lishun Fleets depart inot those two sectors. Norris & Vland are cut off from one another.

The Aslan ihatei invade Tobia & Daibei, on schedule once word of STrephon's death reaches them. Even the Solomani frontier gets attacked by the Aslan, diverting some Solomani Naval assets to spinwards.

Lucan finds himself fighting the Solomani (in the Rim), The Vargr (Lishun Flank), and trying to exterminate Strephon (Gushemege) when Isis's Federation of Ilelish forces attacks Him as well.

Strephon discovers new hatred and hell hath no fury when his rapproachment with Isis fails. Likewise Lucan's offer to sit at his side falls flat. Isis blamed them both for her father's death.

summer of 1118-terra Falls, and the Lucanic loyal Duke of Sol is forced into the "Vegan Pocket".

Fall of 1118-Daibei under Duke Craig Secedes, virtually cut off, and refuses Isis, and Lucan's pleas for ships.

1119-1122 Lucan-Isis-Strephon try to kill each other while Lishun, Coprridor get plundered. The good news, Margaret has at least stabilizzed the Solomani front, and is retaking the Old Expanses.

The Black War, Hard Times, go down as scheduled.

The Coronation Fleet is led by Dulinor's brother who releases Virus. He gets killed by the threshing machine. Isis dies in the Viral hell that becomes Ilelish.

The Collapse happens, as scheduled, the factions survive, ebb and fall as written in 1248, OoTD

We move to the 1248 era time line in our campaign to 1210, in the Wilds in the former Duchy of Cyril...

That's how we did the rebellion.
Thank you.

Bill Cameron--

Sir, I cannot take sole claim over the entirety of this version of ATU-MT-rebellion ending. 'Truth be told the engineering of the Rebellion to square what our gamers had done fell squarely on the shoulders of the following:

Bryan Gibson--who gave us the D'kelva, and later the Ine-Givar as the "Al-Quaeda" of the Imperium.

John Gardner--who proved to Bryan the D'Kelva weren't invulnerable, and provided us with a non-Regency Organic (D'kelvan led humans) polity ally holding the once "Sick man of the Reft" Islands State, The D'Kelvan Freehold.

George Adkins--who gave us the Solomani angle trysting away Lucan, and playing their betrayal to Lucan with the Old Expanses Nobles folding into their hands upon the Invasion.

MJD--Whose 1248 OotD ending portrayed a stronger Lucan. And with whom I've shared some of my ideas for that work. His Lucan is the one we portray.

Myself--Making it plausible, finding a new Archduke of Ilelish closer tied to Strephon (Iphegenia's Brother); using Lucan as the envoy of death to Dulinor; Using MJD's Lucan as maybe not a tactician, but with any Prince of the Imperium the history lessons of Plankwell & Arbellatra could not have been lost on him in his youth; making the murder of Varian more personal--his woman wanted Varian, and was not swayed by becoming empress. He killed them both of course.

The MT-rebellion Authors--much of which I left unchanged, and then changed only the sequence of events to suit the ATU being the propellant of the Solomani-Ine-Givar-Lucan angle. They gave him a patsy, and then took him for a country mile. Needless to say, our Lucan couldn't shout aloud "You promised Terra and no More!" when the OE Sector fell like a stack of cards before the Sol-Blitzkrieg, and the suborning of 75% of its nobility left Margaret holding Vaward & coreward 4x subsectors.

Lastly, yourself sir. I picked your brains years ago over the Island's States and campaigns about them. From you, I learned the fragility of their co-operation & peacefulness. This gave me the seed to plant the plot of the Trans-Reft Corporation idea, the Duke of Cyril, & to find a foe for Bryan's D'Kelva to fit them into our TU.

Honored to have made your acquaintance

Sincerely humbled,

Stei'awtliyrl,

I managed to find something more on Virasa for you. This TNS news item is from SGJames' on-line JTAS magazine. (All the TNS items there are free(1) so I'm not being 'naughty' by sharing it.)

Here you go:

Dlan/Ilelish 289-1118

Received: 289-1118

The 457th meeting of the Khanu, the supreme synod of the Virasin faith concluded today, with the usually ceremony blessing all who participated and wishing them a safe journey home. The meeting had promised to be a major theological event, debating a central issue of the Virasin faith, namely whether Virasin that die non-violent deaths while not on Dlan may attain full revelation in the afterlife. The issue has been proposed for the agenda several times in the past, but has never been debated before the full Khanu.

In what commentators are calling a major anticlimax, however, the highly contentious issue was tabled until the next meeting, which will be in two years.

I was wrong about it being a 'convocation', the term used is 'synod'. However, check out this bit; ... non-violent deaths while not on Dlan.... That fits my booze-sodden memories rather well.

Members of the Virasan faith must die non-violently and die on Dlan to gain whatever it is that their faith grants them in the afterlife. During the Rebellion, Dulinor suborned this synod to achieve acceptence of the issue most likely as a way to tap more effectively into Dlan's manpower for his Federation's cause.

Like a few other TNS items, this one is an 'echo' of sorts from the Rebellion timeline. In these 'echos', we see the Alternate timeline dealing with similar issues and events as the Rebellion timeline, like the Virasan synod, or personalities in working in smilar ways, like the SolSec Co-Ordinator using the Kukulcan Purges to increase SolSec's power over the military just as he had used the Rebellion to do the same thing.

Of course, as I suggested before, this is purely an OTU matter. How Virasa 'works' in YTU is your concern alone. I just thought you'd like a few more tidbits about Virasa.

Please don't forget to keep us updated on your campaign!

Have fun,
Bill

Bill & Stei'awtliyrl,

FYI, The information regarding Virasa is also detailed in Traveller's Digest #9. (This was probably the origin of the information, but I am not 100% certain on that.)

Jim,

Thanks for the pointer. I'm sure it will help Stei'awtliyrl out.

Would you happen to remember anything from the article?

Have fun,
