DGP and all that

Woohoo! I had just posted a question about the Spinward Ho fanzine elsewhere on these boards. So the release date is June 4th? Or sometime in June 2004?

Looking forward to it,
Flynn

Good points Flynn and Elliot...Good points. Couldn't blame him. Perhaps we should support Mr Sanger's viewpoint....

I would say an (1-2) ebook with all of the Traveller Digests in it and ebooks of the various products would sell enough to makeup the difference pain. But cannot blame someone for being angry with negative comments.

Is Mr. Sanger warehousing the stuff, or does he just own the source material minus unsold stock?

I don't know Mr. Sanger, but business is business. I only know one game designer whose ego is easily bruised (a guy down in Texas, who treats his dwindleing customer base like dirt), and thank God (or gods) that MWM and other Traveller associates aren't like that. To me it sounds like the guy's just trying to recoup his losses on the stuff based on what I've read here. But that's just speculation, I don't know either way.

Well, Roger has also incurred the wraith of the Traveller community by keeping his communication to the minimum. Promising vast expendatures only to fail to meet deadlines, provide emails that expire.

I used to feel that DGP should see the light of day again but increasingly perhaps we ought to let dead dogs lie.

I am still interested in the DGP story and how GDW wanted the Traveller line would have progressed but now I feel rather resigned that Traveller is best done with the good agencies of Quicklink & SJG. Just as I would perhaps like to see Security Leak resurrected...I am not going to waste any more ink agonizing on what could have been and trust the companies named above will fill in those gaps that DGP & GDW pioneered in the 1980s.

Roger never had the physical stocks of product. Those were already out the door when he bought DGP... or so he said.

About Roger ...

The remains of DGP were languishing in my basement and the future of Traveller was uncertain, so I figured someday I would empty it all into the dumpster and that would be that.

Remember, this was before things like eBay and the internet.

Then this rabid "fan" shows up at my door and about wets his pants when he saw what was left in my basement. He offered me a tidy 4 digit sum for it all. I figured it was all dumpster fodder.

From there we discussed total transfer of rights to everything, drafted a contract, and made it happen over the next few weeks. I was ready to get out of the SF Roleplaying business, so I was happy to walk away from it all with some cash in my pocket.

Marc Miller, Roger, and I did have some conference calls about Roger picking up the ball and finishing development on some things. Roger is one of those people who can weave the talk and sound like he could make it happen. Sadly, it was all talk.

Roger, IMO, didn't really understand that the gaming business isn't about big bucks. It's more about a labor of love, and a lot of grunt work grinding out products. At the end of the day, you have to *produce something*.

Roger did walk away with most of the DGP inventory, such as it was. Before you get all excited, realize the leftover inventory was the stuff that didn't sell well, so you won't find any copies of the Alien books, Starship Operators Manual, or World Builder's Handbook among what Roger got.

Hope that explains what happened.

Thanks for the big explanation but as an ideas man how about planting a few seeds on the boards. DGP could always stir things up in the Traveller universe be it background or rules.
