DGP and all that

Ok the *ideas* and concepts in the DGP material are derivative of the OTU and could be used in new Traveller material, except that Marc has expressly forbidden it.

His reasoning is that it is more likely that someone would directly copy material out of the DGP books rather than rewrite the concepts in their own words. That would be a direct violation of Roger Sanger's copyright ownership. Rather than risk allowing a licensee to do this, Marc has not allowed it in order to protect not only himself, but the licensee, AND Roger Sanger.

The bottom line is that unless Roger Sanger is willing to come to agreement on a license with Marc, or is willing to come to an agreement with an existing licensee (he is not, I have tried), the DGP material will remain forbidden to use by licensees.

Hunter; I assume you mean published concepts that DGP exressly developed, like some, but not all, of the vehicles from the "101 Vehicles" guide book. That is to say a licensee could develop something, use an air raft in the product (whatever it is), but couldn't use say the Vargr airraft from that book, because it was a thing created expressly by DGP? That is the licensee can use airrafts because that's always been part of Traveller, but anything specific from DGP's publications (derivative stuff) is verboten. Is that right?

BG,

Let me give you two examples:

The Trojan Reaches were "officially" published in TD20, under DGP copyright. However, it was also published prior to that under a different copyright, portions of the data was published in AotI, and some of the subsectors were published in CT Adv4 and TNE RS. Consequently, since all of the data in TD20 was also produced elsewhere, that data is fair game.

On the other hand ...

MT World Builders' Handbook (and its predecesor GS/GC) used their expanded rules on Regina. One neat tidbit was that, on Regina, only persons born on Regina can vote. If you emigrate to Regina, you can't vote. Ever. But any children born on-world can. This piece of data appears no where else, and therefore, cannot be used. (Even though I would *really* like to.)

[Hunter: please feel free to correct me if I am wrong, and delete the message if I am completely wrong. But I think I have this right.]

Thanks for the clarification Hunter.

So basically Marc gets an annual royalty fee or percentage? Its a shame I think a CDrom of the DG stuff would sell.

daryen; yeah, that sounds about right. That's pretty much what I was aksing about: Anything specifically created by DGP. Ah well. Thanks for the example. It helped confirm my thoughts.

It's been what, a decade? The guy's lucky that Traveller has such a rabid fan base. How many other RPG's have died in that time? He should just suck it up and meet Marc's terms. Better to have some money than no money at all.

And then guys like me would stop bad mouthing him.

Considering the fact that _one fan_ was able to get a license from Marc to publish previously unpublished Keith Bros adventures on a very limited scale at a very reasonable price (I am talking about the immemorial Cargonaut Press, of course), Marc`s demands for a license to reprint some of the old DGP books is probably very reasonable as well (i.e. it`s probably notvery difficult to obtain such a license from Marc). And since R.S. is not willing to meet these demands makes him look all the more unreasonable in my eyes. Curse the day that DGP sold off it`s rights to Mr. Sanger.
