DGP and all that

Considering the fact that _one fan_ was able to get a license from Marc to publish previously unpublished Keith Bros adventures on a very limited scale at a very reasonable price (I am talking about the immemorial Cargonaut Press, of course), Marc`s demands for a license to reprint some of the old DGP books is probably very reasonable as well (i.e. it`s probably notvery difficult to obtain such a license from Marc). And since R.S. is not willing to meet these demands makes him look all the more unreasonable in my eyes. Curse the day that DGP sold off it`s rights to Mr. Sanger.

Hunter,

Do you know if Marc himself might be willing to rewrite the concepts in a book or fourteen of his own, and sell them as supporting material for either T5 or an existing Traveller set, so that he creates appropriate resources for writers that do not violate copyright? Or is this a complication he'd rather not deal with?

Hear, hear! And let me toss in my two huzzah's for Paul Sanders' Cargonaut Press. He did a great service to many Traveller nerds, including myself.

Have to say this is somewhat confusing. Never read anything from Cargonaut Press.

I can understand not wanting to do reprints because of time but why not subcontract to hunter or someone else. DGP on Cdrom would be a nice product. Of course, if Sanger is sitting on stock he might be feeding it to ebay at $10+ per mag. a tidy profit.

The only bad thing is that the re-product reduces the value of the original unless a method of retaining the value is determined (for those of us that have payed $10+ for a few mags).

My guess is that R. Sanger is of the likely impression that the DGP materials are worth more than they are. Or, he thinks that he has already sunk so much money into obtaining them, giving up the materials (directly or via subcontract) isn't worth it unless he gets his asking price (whether or not that asking price is realistic is another matter).

Also, he probably can't sell reprints unless he gets a new license from Marc, and he may not be willing to purchase a license because of the cost or because of previous history.

Realistically, how many copies of a DGP reprint could anyone really sell? Sure, the rabid Traveller fanboys would snap up a copy, but, really, how many copies would that be? A thousand? Four thousand? Five thousand? Realistically estimating the number of copies that one could sell has to factor in a go-no go decision.

It may be that Mr Sanger has reached the point where he no longer cares about the reprint value. He may have been upset with the fans' reaction to his initial proposal, and given the kind of reactions that people have posted about him over the intervening years, I wouldn't blame him one bit for having an attitude of "they can all rot in Hades, for all I care" because of the statements of so many people on the various Traveller lists and boards.

I've read belittling statements about his livelihood, his manhood, his breeding habits, his genetic ancestry, and so on. I've read threats against his person and his life, and I'm just a casual viewer of the TML and some other Traveller lists. People aren't afraid to be jerks over email (though I'm sure none of our good readers here ever do that kind of thing), and if I were him, I'd have long ago decided that such people don't deserve to have what I control, just because of their attitudes.

But that's my impression of the whole situation. Not knowing Roger Sanger, it may or may not have any bearing on his decisions. But it would affect mine, were I in his shoes.

That said, I still hope someday he opens the door on that material. I just personally don't expect to ever see it happen.

More later,

I agree - its funny (odd not ha ha) how one man that so few people have ever had any direct contact with can draw so much ire and disdain.

I have a faint recollection that part of Mr Sanger's dispute was with GDW during its death throws (i.e. post MWM) when it refused to let RS put up a subscription based email site. This was before Mr Miller's reasonable fair usage policy that has spawned many a good site currently on the web (and to plug it, coz I play very enjoyable games of Traveller with him - Richard Tongue's Spinward Ho fanzine - due June 04!).
