What is 2300AD?

And 2320 won't be. I have fairly explicit intructions on that score. It won't be Transhuman Space in the Stars either. Cybertech and biotech do play a role, but that role is minimal, even experiemental for the most part. DNAMs are more used to aid in adaptation to hostile environments than they are used to produce super-soldiers. The 2300AD tech section even states that genetic engineering for intelligence and other "superior" traits was problematic.
So Colin, you'll be writing the T20 2300 supplement then? Is there a formal announcement due? And when can we start harrassing you with questions about what's going to be in the new book then?

Yes, I'll be writing 2320, the D20 version of 2300 AD. There will be a formal announcement soon. We're just working out the final details.

You can ask all you want, make whatever suggestions you want. I can't say as I'll use all of them, or indeed, any of them
but I will read them, and consider them. Nor can I say that I'll be able to answer all your questions. I'll want to save a few things as a surprise.

Given that, though, harass away. I just ask that you be polite

Excellent news! I look forward to the announcement.

On consideration I (and I suggest others do the same) will fore-bear for the moment: it seems fairer to let you guys sort out the formal details and make your announcements first.

As for whate you do with suggestions from me (or indeed anyone else) that is an entirely sensible approach; although I presume you are aware of just how, erm, 'robust' 2300 fandom can be? Fans are frequently the last people to ask about what should be done because what people think they want and what they actually want are two very different things. But I'm sure all the 2300 fans here and at the two Yahoo lists will be willing to provide constructive comments.

Given that, though, harass away. I just ask that you be polite

As I said, I'll wait until you guys have made some defininte statements and I have somthing constructive to say. And if I do come across as impolite I apologise - I try to self edit but being a misanthropic old revoltionary I am prone to a certain degree of contrariness.

As for the rest of the community here, well I find CotI still about the politest and most reasonable place on the net. So hopefully everyone will maintain that tradition in discussing 2320AD.

Thanks for replying Colin and I look forward to the announcement.

All the best,

Nick Middleton

'Robust' is a good way to describe any Traveller fan, whether 2300, CT, T20 or what have you.
They take the game seriously. I just want everyone to know that I do as well, and that I shall do the best job I can with the game.
They have a right to thier opinion, and good reasons for it. I'll take them seriously, but at the same time, I have my own ideas, as does QLI, and I want to see them realized. I've been playing 2300 since it was Traveller: 2300. I have played other games since, but I've always been drawn to the setting.
Now, I have the wonderful opportunity to revisit that setting, and I intend to do a good job of it.
Thanks.

*new comer alert*
I just found out about this forum. I'm a lurker, and sometimes contributor to the 2300ad mailing lists.

I heard that colin is writing the d20 2300ad remake, 2320 I guess... and I just wanted to share that I'm completly excited about the prospect and can't wait for the announcment, (and any other jucy details.)

I guess to stay on thread...
2300ad to me is a universe rich with possiblity and chance. it reflects a well done portrayal of a powerful civilization that thinks its on top of the world, and then suddenly put in its place by seeing that another species is out there, and just as powerful.

finding them selves with wealth and riches aplenty, but still struggling with the realities of forming new lives and chances on far flung worlds.

continuing to struggle with the inate ability of humans to desire more for them selves, at the expense of others.

The game succeds at placing the universe at the finger tips of man, but keeping so much of it deep in mystery by not giving them godly technologies and unbeatable abilities.

The conceptualization and realization of the universe, by the game developers was so well thought out that forgetting the changes in the world we know as fact (post 1985, fall of the berlin wall, a lack of a nuke-WW3, and all that).
You are given a world, that has a realistic and beliveable history behind it.

There are issues and inconsistancies with in the game that are present in many RPG's, but with some descretion, and good thinking, the average Referee is able to write up a belivable story and background to fill these holes, and twist them slightly so they make sense. (inconsistancies in exactly how many ships each fleet has for instance, and the realities of founding a colony world... etc...)

Out of all the Sci-Fi RPG's I've given a shot, 2300ad stands out heads and shoulders above the rest as something I've had the most fun with.

My one wish... is that its easier to find a decent stutter warp capable ship that can be easily manned by 4 to 5 people. (the average size of any rpg session I have) ;)

I wish you the best of luck in your writing, and I'm excited to see what comes of it.

Colin:

Welcome aboard! I just want to add to the discussions about making 2320, harder setting.

Simply, having humanity spread out amongst the stars also means a thinner human population. I would try to emphasize the movement toward creating a Garden Earth, as the birthplace of humanity plus the strong outward urges of some of the colonial worlds trying to get independence.

The emphasis in Traveller and 2300 ought to reestablish really hostile planets but humanity's striving to create a niche.

I would also want to see more details of the various memes that are often masking as foundations. I hope as well that we can see something akin to a reformulation of the Twilight years akin the Merc 2000 write-up, a conflict driven period that social scientists call this period - global turbulence, as the tectonic plates of hegemonic order are shifting under the feet of the United States.

As a fan of the dark, it would be kinda cool to allude to something more mysterious and enigmatic beyond kafer space. IMTU, I have made this the Vilani but I know there is much opposition to this concept...but still if something not yet known about...just having ships disappearing into the night of the beyond ought to still be consistant with the Hard SF emphasis.

Also, I hope that we are going to see a resurgence of new technologies extrapolated from the old that are listed in the rulebooks.

The alien civilizations could also be explored in much more depth and adding a few touches of mystery.

Big project, let Hunter know if you will need photocopies of any of the collection that I will be sending him...if he decides to opt for it.

Cheers,
kafka

You have some good ideas there. Some are along the lines of where I want to go, some, maybe less so. But still good.

There will be some changes to the historical timeline, but that is part of the Twilight project. Not for me to say here what those changes entail.

The Vilani will not enter into it, I can tell you that much. 2320 doesn't take place in the OTU, at any point in history. If you want to run it that way, go for it. I've used Kafers and Pentapods in my Traveller games, afterall.

I'll be going into as much detail as I can, on as many things as I can, but it is only one book.

I'll keep in mind that collection of yours if Hunter nabs it. I'd only really be looking for some Challenge articles, though. I think I've got the rest.

Here is a link with tons of great info. Right now I'm working on the "greens" to
do molds for 15mm Kafers (one of my favorite bad guys of all time) from 2300.
