To MT or not to MT

To go MT or not.

In the current campaign there is one player who knows the history of the OTU. Our date is currently 117-1107 and CT is the setting. It looks like we are going to reach the time when I will have to make a choice about whether to go with the OUT timeline. I must admit that changing the setting for this campaign would be an interesting idea. The Imperium I use is smaller than the OTU so there will be all the factions and not lot of room so to speak.
The power level of the PCs continues to climb by inches. It will be at least three years in game terms until the Gazelle is ready to fly, (1110) then six more years before the assassination. If all goes well for them I suspect that they will have some power by then an perhaps some minor peerages (knight, baronet) They make it a point to do lots of favors for important people and that has earned them something of a reputation on two local planets. If I do go with the MegaTraveller setting I don’t think that I will go all the way to Virus. They are awake and while getting them to survive the downfall of civilization would be an interesting story arc at that point we might just retire the characters. I can’t believe I am saying this but after a solid year and a half of play a little shake up might be nice.

Just thinking out loud.

You can certainly start to go down the MT/Rebellion route. You don't, however, have to go all the way with it.

If you want one side to win, go ahead.
If you want it to end in a stalemate, go ahead. If you want one of your PCs to become Emperor, go ahead...

How rapidly is game time passing in your campaign, compared to real time?

Well time travels rather quickly when they are in space. Each jump of knocks a week off. They spend time on world and like to spend months setting up capers. When we play we dedicate at least 3-4 hours to a game and I don’t like to get bogged down in single combat actions that take 45 min to resolve. If memory serves three game years have passed since we started.

The level of violence seems to be going up though. Can’t quite figure that one out. The level of disregard for the lives of NPCs is going down as their power level goes up. Perhaps that is just the way of things.

The most the PCs can hope for is to be a big ship in a small pond. With the layers of heredity and class structure minor peerages or small fleets (3-5 combat ships) is all I am willing to do as of now. Emperor is not really *chuckle* an option but I get your idea. I was just bouncing ideas around. The Mind Flayer threat is about to come to a head and as soon as their gunboat is ready to fly I expect them to take care of it.

As for the MT setting, if I go that route I will pick up the CD pack as a guide to setting. Although I hear that the Rebellion Sourcebook and Hard Times are the critical mood setters.

In the end there is a time for retirement for PCs. In the past groups have split up long before it became an issue. We have a dedicated group now.

Reb is less useful than HT. It does provide, however, a really good look at what is out there for factions. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT let your players casually read it, if at all possible. The consolidated CT word gen tables are nice.

Survival Margin (Technically TNE) provides some really good insights to the MT setting. And sets a few records straight (or crooked, as the case may be).

If you do not want to deal with the Virus, just get Hard Times and assume a slow and painful recovery (with many small polities rather than the huge Imperium springing up after it) once it's over.

I'd say going MT ruleswise is a good idea.

Settingvise I'd just get Rebellion Sourcebook and keep CT if that what you're using now.

Saty away from the MT CD. It has no errata and the scan is apparantly of abyssmal quality. All MT books can be found on eBay frequently for ~$10 each.
