Hivers

Personally I can't see the Hivers crow-barring a Snohl into a ship just so they can feel comfortable on the journey............[/QUOTE]

Of course not. The hiver will merely make the snohl believe that getting on the ship is the snohl's own idea. :-)

And I do very much like the idea of mini-snohls roaming around hiver ships, cleaning up debris, eating the occasional escaped young one...

I like the idea of a Gengineered Snohl with an airlock, a maneuver drive and a Jump Drive. :) The Hivers get to keep Snohl's close, different computer (Organic components) high tech, and different looking. :) Bigger ships just need bigger Snohls. :)

So do they have smaller Snohl's to tunnel out the genengineered spaceship Snohl?

Hivers are getting scarier and scarier, i like it.:file_23:

Hardly. More than half of the Hiver source references will be TNE.

CT AM7 Hivers

Eyethangewe.

All TNE AotR Hivers and Ithklur did was add all that stoopid stuff about the Ithklur, joy bells and silly hats and the Tetramous way (which isn't silly). The rest was simply CT AM7 Hivers re-worked, nearly verbatim, with some other little bits chucked in for good measure (some of which are useful, such as the Terminal Manipulation concept). Even G:T AR3 is based heavily/mainly on CT AM7 Hivers. However, let's not turn this into something it isn't (i.e. an argument). Thanks for splitting the posts off in the first place, Aramis :)

ROFLMAO!
Then we would need two different subspecies of genengineered Snohl. :) Sounds confusing to those that aren't Hivers, especially if they are all simply referred to as Snohl. Very Hiverish in your thinking. :)

Why Stop at Two?

If you're genengineering from a common base there is economy of scale - so why stop at two subspecies? Take the gene pool used to the limit!

CT AM7 Hivers

I do want to point out that, while it is indeed true that the core of Aliens of the Rim did come from AM7, it was done in such a way as to call all of it into question, if not outright invalidate it.

Put another way, AotR took AM7, stood it on its head, and spun it around. While the text was there, AotR completely perverted the meaning of AM7. (In a good way. This is not a criticism.) For any flaws that Aliens of the Rim might or might not have, it was that book that truly opened my eyes to the true possibilities of the Hivers and the beauty that is the Ikthlur.

I will also point out that the Hivers in GT:AR3 are the TNE Hivers, not the CT Hivers. (Which is only appropriate, as both AotR and the Hiver section of AR3 were created by the same author.) The really cool part of AR3 is that it actually had the paragraph or two that I needed to finally understand what he intended about the nature of the Hivers. My biggest complaint about AR3 was its complete lack of coverage on the Ithklur.

I thought Dave, in his comments posted elsewhere on the web, indicated that he never really got to contribute to AR3 in any meaningful way.

My biggest complaint about AR3 was its complete lack of coverage on the Ithklur.

I always liked them way back to the original Alien Module.

<Hivers off to the side of the topic for a second......>

I've re-read TNE:AotR, CT:AM7 and GT:AR3.

I can see the differences in approaches across all three books and I must admit that I like bits from each of them. In addition, I do like the "darker" edge TNE gives to both the Hivers and the Ithklur (silly hats with bells aside ;) )

So, maybe, just possibly, perhaps, T5/MongTrav might combine all the best bits from across all 3 books for the T5 setting into one, fantastic, wonderful, dark and edgy "T5: Hivers & Ithklur" sourcebook.

.....then the alarm clock went off and the Hiver fell out of bed..... :(

<.........Hivers back to the front of the topic.......>

I'm going to sound like an idiot, but I'm new to traveller and the forum here so please bear with me. What's with the hiver/mop jokes?

I'm not new, and I still don't get the Hiver with a mop jokes...

but I suspect its a reproductive reference. (Hiver place little emphasis on sex, are hermaphroditic, and constantly breeding, dropping larvae, and on ships or in other untennable environments, exterminating casually the larvae.)

No problemo, mate and welcome to the weird and wonderful world that is Citizens of the Imperium! :)
What's with the hiver/mop jokes?
.....ah. I suppose I had better explain, Inspector...........

As you may (or may not!) be aware, I am CotI's local friendly Hiver. Somewhere in the dim and distant past, on another Traveller-related board, I was involved in a play-by-post sort of thing where I, as the Hiver, was taken on by the starship captain as........the janitor. I was given overalls, an official ship's cap and.........

some buckets and mops.

In typical Hiver fashion, I caused havoc amongst the crew and guests with my Hiver-y hijinks, specifically by recalibrating the cargo lift to be 20% more efficient in its load lifting capacity. However, this was not appreciated by the ship's crew, as I also reconfigured the controls for Hiver use and used Hiver glyphs and Gurvin words instead of Anglic for control labels.

Needless to say, this got me into further trouble with the captain and crew.

The upshot of all of this is that, now, the Hive Federation issues TL-15 mops to all Hivers outside of the Federation, just in case someone spills some ketchup or coffeejuice. So, where ever I go, what ever I do, if there's a mess, I'm the Hiver with the TL-15 mop to clean it up..........

Hence the Hiver/mop references.

<I'll shut up now, shall I? :(>

Ah yes, I remember that. I enjoyed the part aboard ship.

NO! KEEP TALKING!
