CDRom Project News

A perhaps even better idea, but would take some more initial work, is literally retyping and relayout of the works. The beauty of this is that you end up with an editable "source" for the books that can be used to generate PDFs, or HTML, or whatever. It's also easy for ANYONE to contribute, because they would mostly just have to type text from the books, and that means that a lot more people can participate.

The hard part is ...
Getting the rights holders to say OK.

If you did that, you would have lots of volunteers and all of MT could be done in about a year. One book a month. Your process is a great idea. Count me in, for any part of it. Type, scan, layout, convert, and publish PDF. The first step, getting permission, should only take you about a lifetime though.

It looks like Page 4 also missing. :( :( :(

How legal would it be for me to scan the missing pages and post them somewhere? I could also include instructions on how to use a shareware program to insert the missing pages into your MT Players Manual PDF.

The black boxes are a symptom of scanning in black and white, not greyscale. If everything was greyscal it would have been much better quality, but the files would not fit on a single CD. Other than rescanning the page, the only thing I can suggest is open it in Photoshop and manually delete and recreate the box. Of course, you have to know what the text should be before you can do this. :(

Completely, illegal but Marc is working on revising the whole project and getting it right. When and the particulars, I do not have. No doubt, T5 is what is taking up so much time plus running several separate businesses.

His consulting business for game designers, his print shop and Far Future Enterprises (essentially reviewing all Traveller material and holding the Traveller copyright) to add to your list...I presume is what you you asking. Plus, scaling back to a retirement context.

Okay, I thought that would be the case. :( I guess it is okay if I do it for my own use though, since I own the CD and the printed books. It would just be really handy to have the files on my laptop when I am on the road. (Much easier than carrying all the books around.)

Don't contact me requesting a copy as I will only do this for my own personal use. This is America, the land where help is a four letter word. :( :(

Ironic considering that you've made requests for scans or (pristine, full-color) photocopies of Traveller materials before on CotI. ;)

I would suggest contacting MWM himself (via the email addresses on FFE’s website) on this, he may be agreeable to this, as a temporary measure (and/or putting your scans up on FFE's site) if nothing else until he can post official fixes. Kafka isn't American (different legalities), doesn't work for FFE/MWM/QLI/Comstar-Avenger AFAIK, and thus isn't the final say on this matter. Scanning your own books for your own use is still fine AFAIK.
