CDRom Project News

I recently bought the MT CD-ROM and was really peeved to find that it was a scan of the first edition with all the typos included. I also feel that providing it as a simple PDF scan is very unprofessional.

I've therefore used Acrobat's OCR to convert the scans into editable text and am currently stepping my way through the OCR suspects. Once I've touched it up, I'll then be adding all of the errata I can find.

Now it would certainly be illegal if I provided the full files to people so I have no intention, but if I provided free of charge, only the pages that have been corrected, I suspect I could 'get away with it'.

DMCA says *what* otherwise? </font>[/QUOTE]I think what he was saying (and the way I read it too in some explanation) was that even making an electronic (or other) copy for your own use except for the express purpose of an identical backup* (and then only when such express permission is given) is not legal. iirc.

* no legal right to make a "corrected" copy

You might but I'm not sure it'd be legal if it went beyond a paragraph as allowed un MWM's fair use policy.

About the only thing in this vein you might be able to legally do would be to offer free of charge your list of errata/corrigendum. It's a pity, a shame even, after being so disappointed and going to such work that it can't be shared.

I might suggest contacting Marc, he may be interested in using what you and others have done along these lines. It'd be nice if he could simply set up a download for people who have bought the CDR so they could have access to corrections like this.

Ooh! Oooh! Nurse!!

Now that sounds good. And CT material should at least produce legible scans.
