Virus killed Byzrk?

Perhaps, the virus used was a variation of Project Samson...

Quite frankly, do prefer Bill's idea of rivaling Intelligence Agencies. The Imperium has always struck me as pre-9/11 United States with its institutional rivary whilst allowing a domestic aristocracy to fill shoes that a meritocracy should have done away with long ago. NB: Not wanting to turning this into a political pulpit topic but the institutional disarray and rivary of the contemporary Imperium is both the strength and its greatest weakeness as outlined when Emperor Dulinor assumes the small Throne on Dlan.

Bill,

I don't suppose you could lay your hands on exactly which copies of Challenge or DGP journals they were in. I have an unhealthy fascination with all things related to the JP/Menderes groups.

This is interesting -

- Bill Cameron -

(He hadn't done anything else, Dave Nilsen's masterful deconstruction and decanonization of IRIS ranks him among the greats.)

When did DN do this to IRIS ? Or is this a reference to Survival Margin ? I actually liked the idea of IRIS but it was one that appeared to get out of hand (having them take over three subsectors in the Solomani Rim) seemed a little over the top.

I have no difficulty with an Imperial Intelligence Agency answering directly to the Emperor - but I also like the idea of lots and lots of covert operatives and groups answering solely to their particular noble patrons.

The decanonisation occurred in Survival Margin, when Strephon commented about how he had never heard of them.

For my money, the worst part about IRIS was its "middle class" aspect. Supposedly, the ultimate guarantors of the survival of the Imperium were people who had no actual stake in the survival of the Imperium. Good one.

If they had ever attempted to carry out their supposed role they would have been brushed aside by the nobility. They simply had no right, business or legitimacy in trying to tell the nobility what to do.

Incidentally, as written, IRIS didn't actually answer to the Emperor, or anyone else...

It was, in effect, a five hundred year old conspiracy of palace bureaucrats, which somehow had managed to not merely survive, but actually remain an effective force, while at the same time managing to remain secret.

I don't have any problem with "IRIS" managing to weasel their way into control of entire subsectors. By the time this occurred all kinds of scam artists and adventurers were trying to set up their own little pocket empires all over the Imperium. That one of these gangs claimed to be a bunch of covert Emperor brokers is totally reasonable. It's also totally reasonable that at least some people might be willing to pretend they believe their claims...

The decanonisation was, as Bill Cameron noted, handled in a very skillful manner. Dave simply subverted the idea by hinting that IRIS might not be who they claim to be. This allowed Referees to make their own decisions as to who or what this outfit actually were, including the option that IRIS were indeed who they claimed.

Frankly, this kind of approach is one of my favourite ways of dealing with the bits of canon I don't like, but don't want to directly contradict. You simply declare a statement to be an opinion or a claim made by a particular group or individual, and you can then play with the truth to your heart's content.

You can also say "that is true, but not the whole truth". Pretty nearly any interesting phenomenon has its contradictory elements, and messing about with these can provide lots of interesting results as well.

of course, Traveller also being about "wheels within wheels", it could be that IRIS purposely kept a low profile knowing what they knew about this current Imperial Family.

Similarly, IRIS could be a front organization for another Intelligence Agency - the INS comes to mind given the long history of Emperors coming from the Navy. A conspiracy like a policy need to have written documented existance it just need to exist between the lines of Standard Operating Proceedures.

IRIS could also have been something of a Solomani subterfudge. Having being ejected from their favoured status after the Rim War/War of Solomani Liberty, a bunch of disenfranchaised Nobles decide to create an agency.

IMTU, I have been influenced by many conspiracies and policies that have been created long in the past that periodically rise up and then fade back into the background as hooks for adventurers.
