Tutorial: T5.10 ShipMaker Spreadsheet

Crew calculations changed to T5 style based on consoles and control panels, rather than the old CT inspired defaulting.
1. Panels are counted and assigned to crew departments.
2. Consoles are assigned per crew departement, based on Panels and desired Ergonomics.
3. Crew are assigned to consoles, based on Consoles and desired watches.
4. Some crew added based on other crew, such as medics and stewards.
5. Crew numbers can be adjusted as desired with a number in the Adjustment column.
6. Petty Officers are assigned per Crew, and Officers based on Petty Officers, per crew department.
7. Senior officers added to the Command section based on officers in all departments using the Officer per PO ratio.
8. Troops can be assigned as a custom number or standard unit(s) (squad, platoon, ...).
Example: The crew my calculations defaults for the Daring-class (B2p47):


Some defaults are added to increase compatibility, such as a steward if any high passengers are allocated and a medic if low berths are added.

Civilian ships adds one or a few extra gunner console(s) for future upgrades, but no gunners. That way we can add e.g. a sensor or turret without compromising Ergonomics.

Most of the numbers can be overridden simply by changing them to taste.
The used Officer per PO and PO per Crew ratios can be adjusted far left, and separately for troops.

Standard units are not added as part of the crew, but as "passengers" in separate standard barracks:

Of course the crew calculations means that even large civilian ships with minimal staffing will have extremely small crews.

Example:
Using a 5000 Dton partially streamlined hull, it has a J Drive S3, a M Drive 5B5, and a P Plant S3 giving performance of jump-2 and 2 g acceleration. There is fuel tankage of 1100 Dton, enough for 4 weeks and 1 jump-2.
Controls consists of 27 control consoles, ten operating consoles, and a m/1/bis computer with Ergonomics 4.
There are three sensors: a communicator, a radar, and a scope.
Crew accomodations consists of five staterooms with a Comfort of 4.
Cargo capacity is 3249 Dton. The ship requires a crew of five: a pilot, an astrogator, two engineers, and a maintenance. The ship costs MCr 742,86.

 
That's an awesome bit of work you've done there, quite impressive.

Are you able to post up the latest version, or was that it on p2 of this thread?
 
I noticed that in Book 2's Daring Class design, the cost and tonnage for drives is rounded up to the nearest whole number (you can get fractional values with Stage effects). What's your take on this?
 
I don't round, since:

• When you should round (e.g. Ergonomics) that is specified in the rules.
• No rule says you should round drives or other components in general.
• Some rules depend on not rounding, e.g. weapons on firmpoints.
• Some standard components are specified in fractional Dtons, e.g. low berths and freshers, they are certainly not rounded (see Beowulf p45).


On the other hand, I don't mind if someone voluntarily wants to use larger and more expensive drives than necessary.
 
I agree with all you've said but with drives the additional cost and tonnage is minor and, if nothing else, it makes it easier to draw deck plans. Most other things the fraction is 0.5, so 1 square on a deck plan.
 
Quite, the tonnage is minor, but the cost can be significant for small ships. Say 2/3 Dt × 4 MCr/Dton ≈ MCr 2.7 (Adv M-drive D).


Deck plans are always approximate, I don't really see a problem with a quarter Dton deviation here and there.
