The LSP Clipper 3

The original LSP Clipper design had been designed in response to an IISS request for proposals by industry for ship class designs to transport bulk cargo for the build out of the Express Boat Network throughout the Third Imperium. However, the IISS terminated the project in 653 in favor of already existing hull designs instead, leaving LSP with a working prototype concept in 654 that worked … but which didn't have many buyers until the Ministry of Colonization became interested after the IN conspicuously declined to place any orders. By 657, the original design entered low rate serial production by LSP in support of Ministry of Colonization needs.

Fast forward ~80 years and the original design was starting to show some minor inefficiencies in its integration that could be resolved by a refresh update to the design. By incorporating some of the more up to date and advanced tech level 14 life sciences research insights that had come about in the last 40 or so years, a variety of key engineering changes could be included into a starship designed and built for tech level 10 standards. The result would be a more maintainable and sustainable regenerative biome life support integration.

Following the resolution of the feud between Ling-Standard Products and the Glisten Coordinating Authority at Glisten/Glisten/Spinward Marches in 742, a promising young Imperial Aslan (female, of course) naval architect employed by the shipyard office at Strouden/Lunion/Spinward Marches undertook the seemingly thankless task of doing a complete overhaul review of the legacy design (that no one else really wanted) in order to update it and bring it forward into the (then) modern age of the mid-740s. Her work product naturally hewed more closely to Aslan cultural notions of sex differentiated gender roles for crew than her Humaniti coworkers would have chosen, but the resultant combinations of roles and duties assigned to crew work just fine regardless of crew member races while, also not being a problem for Imperial Aslan crews.

One of the major goals of the project being an upgrade of the regenerative life support biome in order to shift from the earlier Environmental Control Type V-c rating in the previous version to a more comprehensive Environmental Control Type V-d life support integration standard (which makes a BIG difference to land hungry territorial Aslan males!). Of further concern was a desire to add some limited passenger accommodations to supplement the external cargo hauling capacity, allowing third party merchants to be able to travel with their cargoes and/or support staff when chartering the ship for transport.

The revised and updated class has been in continuous volume production at selected LSP shipyards since the late 740s up through 1105 with only minor superficial touch ups to the (still) tech level 10 engineering as Imperial science progressed from tech level 14 to 15 after year 1000.

LSP Clipper 3 (Type AT): Constructed using the same custom winged airframe 400 ton hull as the Lurushaar Kilaalum class Corvette, the Type-T Patrol Cruiser and its follow on Patrol, Response and Pursuit Corvettes, the LSP Clipper 3 shares a great deal in common with the Patrol Corvette in particular, including its civilian standard F/H/H drives producing jump-3 and 4G acceleration with a power plant-4 peformance profile in a "clean" configuration unencumbered by external loads. Fuel tankage is 160 tons, sufficient for one jump-3 and 4 weeks of reactionless maneuvering (HEPlaR reaction maneuvering consumes fuel faster). Fuel scoops are integrated into the hull and an onboard fuel purification plant allows the refining of unrefined fuel skimmed from gas giants or water oceans. The custom detachable bridge has two stations that have both been redesigned for ease of multi-role manning by crew and features an adjacent model/4 computer (without a fiber optic backup) along with a civilian sensor suite. A mixed triple turret armed with a sandcaster, pulse laser and a missile launcher which can be remotely controlled from the pilot/gunner's station on the bridge is the only armament. The ship also has 3 other hardpoints which are not used, but potentially could have turrets installed if needed.

The ship also has an internal hangar berth for a dedicated LSP Armored Fighter A3 used for both escort duties as well as maneuver tug services for the up to 20x Modular Cutter Modules that can be docked externally to the ship for both interplanetary and interstellar transport. There is also an additional internal hangar berth for another 30 ton Modular Cutter Modules. A 25 ton internal cargo bay is also provided, a portion of which can readily be converted into a Mail Vault for mail deliveries to Postal Unions under contract (with or without subsidies).

Accommodations aboard are 8 staterooms (6 for the crew, 2 for high passengers) and 6 low berths. The crew consists of two interchangeable pilot/gunners with duty stations on the bridges of the LSP Clipper 3 and the LSP Armored Fighter A3 (allowing both to be flown in formation together), a navigator/engineer also with a duty station on the bridge, a chief engineer overseeing duty stations in engineering, along with a steward and a medic who both assist with maintenance of the regenerative life support biome systems aboard. All crew members need to be more skilled than is often typical for their respective roles so as to keep crew numbers to a practical minimum that can be supported by the Environmental Control Type V-d systems that remains balanced.

The LSP Clipper 3 costs MCr246.766 in single production, or MCr197.4128 volume production, not including architect's fees. LSP Armored Fighters cost MCr44.97025 (A3), MCr44.35015 (C3), MCr42.31045 (D3) in single production, or MCr35.9762 (A3), MCr35.48012 (C3), MCr33.84836 (D3) per copy in volume production, not including architect's fees. Both designs have been in production long enough that architect's fees are not required at LSP shipyards, however architect's fees may be required to duplicate the design and features by competitors and/or non-Imperial polities (especially if a version is not already in local volume production).

Costs and Revenues: Although comparable in construction cost to the more well known (and larger at 600 tons) Type-M class Subsidized Liner (which is the typical alternative in the MCr220-240 price range) the LSP Clipper 3 actually has a markedly lower overhead cost for a potential increase in cargo/passenger capacity (via Modular Cutter Modules) that is more flexible at meeting demand for transport service levels (one size does not fit all!) in many of the more provincial regions of the Imperial frontiers. The relative simplicity of the ship's tech level 10 systems, standard drives and off the shelf turret system means that parts, spares and maintenance are even more widely available and easily obtained in subsectors that have limited access to higher tech levels. This in turn makes it far easier for civilian operators to keep the LSP Clipper 3 well maintained and in service. The built in armament and armored fighter escort also helps ward off potential pirate attacks than the slower (and unarmed by default) Type-M class Subsidized Liner can manage without damaging their profit margin potential by needing to arm up.

Weaponry: The LSP Clipper 3 has a somewhat unique feature in how the ship's lone turret is crewed (remotely, from the bridge). Under emergency agility conditions, the laser and missile launcher are powered down and unavailable (the sandcaster remains available for defense but is heavily automated). This reduction in the pilot's workload combined with the minimum required pilot skill needed for the role (Pilot-3) means that under emergency agility the LSP Clipper 3 can have an effective emergency agility of up to 5 (in a clean configuration with no external loading). If screened from combat by their LSP Armored Fighter (A3/C3/D3), an LSP Clipper 3 can have an effective emergency agility of up to 7 while in a reserve position out of range of hostile weapon batteries. This then gives the LSP Clipper enough of a "head start" to successfully Break Off By Acceleration using Emergency Agility from most unwanted encounters (which will often times be pirate attacks) should the need arise.

L-Hyd drop tanks: The LSP Clipper 3 has fittings mounted on the hull plumbed for L-Hyd drop tank usage. Typical fuel loads will be in multiples of 40 up to 120 tons, enabling up to a J3+3 range performance (maximum, clean configuration with no external loading).

Some drop tank rental services will permit use of their drop tanks (if dropped) provided the LSP Clipper 3 can deliver more refined fuel to the jump point for use by other ships before the ship returns to the jump point fully (re)fueled and ready to depart the system. How much of a premium of additional refined fuel tonnage to deliver to the drop tank rental service over and above the amount intended to be used for an outbound jump is a point of negotiation with those specific rental services (often a +20% premium for new customers, or a +10% premium for repeat customers) and prices can vary depending on demand.

LSP Armored Fighter A3/C3/D3 (Type FA): Constructed using a 30 ton custom aerodynamic needle configuration armored hull capable of 6G acceleration, the fighter comes armed with a fixed triple missile battery. All versions feature a detachable bridge with 2 workstations, although a solo pilot/gunner is the only crew required, with an adjacent model/2 computer to assist with fire control.

The drive systems layout is more of an area rule "wasp waisted mid-engine" arrangement, with M-Drive thruster plates and HEPlaR maneuvering systems located shortly aft of the fighter's center of gravity and incorporated into the swing wing aerofoils. Fuel tankage and the integral fuel scoop on the hull are located along the ventral keel spine under the drive bay aft of the missile launcher tubes.

The LSP Armored Fighter can act alone as a fighter screen for the LSP Clipper 3 in ship to ship combat situations as well as operating as an atmospheric orbital tow shuttle for 1 Modular Cutter Module at a time, running relays between a planetary surface and low orbit in minutes to assist with delivering any and all externally docked modules while the ship uses maneuvering power to remain in geosynchronous position over the landing site in low orbit, reducing delivery distance.

In the higher tech refresh updates of the design after the basic A3 model, a stateroom is provided for crew comfort and to extend the endurance of independent operations away from any parent craft or base beyond 24 hours.

Peculiarities: By FAR, the most consistently peculiar thing about the LSP Clipper 3 is its Environmental Control Type V-d capacity for its 6 person crew for up to 50 weeks per year (the remaining 2 weeks per year are usually spent in annual overhaul maintenance). If the displacement allocated to this regenerative life support biome and its support systems had been spent on standard life support consumables reserves instead, those 12 tons would have been sufficient reserve capacity for 1800 person/weeks (or 5.76 years for 6 crew members). However, LSP takes it as a point of pride that the quality of life for skilled crews aboard these ships is so high that recruiting seasoned crew for them is very nearly a non-issue (needing to fight off applicants is more of a problem). While life support recycling efficiency of gases, liquids and solids is quite high, is not and cannot ever be 100%. The replacement of losses in chemical reserves necessary for sustaining the biome life systems are routinely obtained from the waste byproducts of wilderness skimmed fuel getting filtered out by the onboard fuel purification plant, which is more integrated into the ship's life support reserves systems than is typical.

High passengers are on a separate life support circuit, segregated by airlocks from the crew areas. The passenger system life support cycle for air, water and food uses standard consumables costing Cr2000 per 2 weeks per person.

LSP bio engineering offers a reasonably wide variety of potential regenerative biome habitat selections to choose from, which can be changed completely during any annual overhaul maintenance at any LSP shipyard. Non-LSP shipyards, by contrast, can only "rebalance and reset" the existing biome's reserves for another year of operations (in many cases, although not all). Most biome habitat options will tend towards Garden World-type emulations, although Water World options are available for non-humanoid crews (such as Dolphins, who prefer aquaculture over hydroponic gardens in their biomes). One potential hazard to the selection of specific worlds to emulate in the biome garden space is whether or not any crew members will have any allergic reactions to living in that biome.

Naming: While there is no officially recognized naming convention for LSP Clippers and their LSP Armored Fighters, there is a bit of a tradition among crews to name their ships after fictional character pairings or couples (naming the ship Morticia and the fighter Gomez, for example) although this tradition is not always followed (as was the case with fanciful naming of a ship Enter Price and the fighter Yaw Nerd).

Variants: Owing to the sheer number of possible load outs with Modular Cutter Modules it is impossible to make an exhaustive list of all variants in service.

Tanker Transport (Type TT): Loaded with 6, 13 or 20 Modular Cutter Modules configured for fuel tankage, an LSP Clipper can make deliveries of up to 580 tons of refined fuel from an in-system gas giant to a Desert World, Fluid World, Vacuum World, Planetoid Belt or Asteroid Belt at 2G once or twice a week (or use 20 modules for up to 790 tons per delivery at 1G). Developing worlds without easy access to hydrogen fuel sources in-system could even potentially charter an LSP Clipper 3 to shuttle refined fuel into the system from gas giants in neighboring systems 1-2 parsecs away in order to meet their (otherwise relatively modest) demands for starship fuel.

Carrier Transport (Type CT): Essentially a "pocket carrier" in which a single Modular Cutter Module can be outfitted with staterooms for five LSP Armored Fighter A3 crews and two maintenance engineers plus 2 tons of life support reserves (300 person/weeks) to sustain operations, with the five fighters themselves docked externally to the LSP Clipper 3. A single module plus half squadron of 5 fighters package can be transported at jump-2/maneuver-2, while a double package plus an additional module for command, control, communications (C3) and flight ops plus staff can be transported at jump-1/maneuver-2 for a full squadron of 10 fighters. Carrier Transports can be hired as paramilitary mercenaries to conduct anti-piracy patrols and light system defense operations under contract to world governments that are not able to construct their own space forces adequate to the task given the limitations of their population, world economy and/or government. Some mercenary contracts of this type could be funded by subsector capitals to patrol trade corridors and mains. Influential high population worlds that want to secure hegemony over their near neighbors can also offer such mercenary contracts (as can "less than legal" groups with sufficient resources and interests).

Carrier Raider (Type CR): The counterpart to the legitimate Type CT Carrier Transport is the more piratical Type CR Carrier Raider (or commerce raider). Modifications are broadly similar to the Type CT, except now the ship and its fighters are "working for the other side" with the flotilla operating more as a pirate corsair. Having a relatively large fighter complement (usually the double package for a full squadron of 10) is typically more than enough to overwhelm most "easy pickings" merchant traffic. Ships with this carrier loadout also make relatively decent privateers for cross-border raiding with their fighters. Although LSP Clipper 3s have limited internal cargo hold space, they make up for it in external load capacity, including being able to dock with a 200 ton Free/Far Trader while retaining all of their fighter modules and making a jump-1 to a neighboring system with their prize.

Merchant Decoy (Type AQ): Some operators will go out of their way to upgrade their ships with higher tech level weaponry, paramilitary or full on military sensors and avionics, and even replace the LSP Armored Fighter A3 with one of the higher tech level models. The most common conversion is to tech level 13 weapons and upgrading to an LSP Armored Fighter D3 to match. By retaining as much commonality with their "stock" Type AT brethren, these Merchant Decoys can ply their trade just like ordinary merchants but have more "punch" hidden up their sleeves than some would be pirates might expect. Some of these conversions are made by private entities who simply want more protection in poorly patrolled regions, while others are the result of government programs sponsoring such upgrades by trusted partners who have easy access to tech level 13 resources for annual maintenance needs. The uncertainty regarding weapon effectiveness created by even a few AQ operators in circulation redounds to the benefit of all LSP Clipper 3 operators if that uncertainty gives pause to any would be pirates who might otherwise have attacked.

Yacht (Type YT): A few LSP Clippers under private ownership have been converted into yachts. The most common means to achieve the conversion is to refit the cargo hold with staterooms for passengers, (the yacht owner occupies the already present 2 high passenger staterooms as their personal double suite). If a security detail is required/desired, a single Modular Cutter Module outfitted for a squad of ship's troops can be acquired which is usually found on Patrol, Response and Pursuit Corvettes.
