T5 Web Apps

Travellermap.com/post.htm

Thanks for getting there first, saves time. It's quite a rigid format, and cuts off a lot of what we'll "actually" know about the systems, but if one maintains a separate, more-complete, and "official" dataset to the side (as I'm doing with my huge Excel sysgen sheets), it makes a great starting point, quick reference, and level-setting tool.

Done. So: May I present to you: online export to TravellerMap!

Currently only the image of the sector is requested.
Any other wishes, except getting the raw data (which is already available, just not visibly so)?

Awesome. Thanks!

You are welcome! :)

And update again: Now you can generate all four map styles (poster, print, atlas, and candy) and download the *.SEC file (is that the correct/intended file extension?)

Pretty damn outstanding work! Seriously!

There are only two things I can think of that would make it a teeny bit more awesomer:
- the ability to change names and see those on the map (or alternatively, no names so you can add them later), and
- trade routes.

Names:
I could provide input fields for name editing, but thought it would be easier to allow downloading the sector data as CSV which can then be edited and saved in any (reasonable) spreadsheet software. The saved CSV could then be uploaded and rendered. Wouldn't this be easier?

Trade Routes:
I am not sure whether importance plays a role in this. But yeah, I guess this could get difficult. As I will be on vacation the next two weeks delving deeper into this matter will have to wait till the end of June/start of July. :/

Oh, Far Trader would be an option (as an optional feature for those who want it).

BTW: Is there an "open" Sector File Format that also supports listing of system details? (currently SectorMaker is not only generating the sector map but also the complete system details that SystemMaker provides -I don't render it at the moment because it is somewhat time consuming and increases the resulting web page to clunky sizes)

The column oriented second survey format is all that's really there, although the XML salted metadata the TravellerMap uses makes a pretty good basis for nailing down borders and trade routes, and seems reasonably capable of expansion.

I've been trying to noodle a way to store and stash the T5 specific extensions (important, economic, cultural) onto Second Survey - I've seen some done as tab-delimited, but I think that's just because it was maintained in a spreadsheet previously.

I have added a *.CSV file download that contains all available data for the current sector. It is slow and does not work for stellar densities above "dense", but it is a first step towards an editable offline format that later will be uploadable again.

Please have a look at it and tell me what you think.

While testing the current version of the SystemMaker I generated an interesting oddity: a planetoid belt in Satellite Orbit! The RAW support this and I like the idea, so I tend to keep it possible. Any other opinions?

That is really only possible if the orbit is close enough to the gas giant or BigWorld that tidal effects tear up any planet that would form normally. If a planet forms (or is captured) in an orbit too close, then the difference between gravitational forces at the near end and the back end of the planet become so great that it wrenches a forming planet into little chunks. If the planetoids are fine enough they can form a ring instead. A fraction of a gee of difference might do it assuming molten or gas materials accumulating during planet formation but I'm no astrophysics guy. Iron Death Stars will survive, however, at least the length of the warranty...

Sector to Subsectors?

These online utilities are beyond awesome. I've waited over 3 months to get my order of T5 (just after Kickstarter closed); still don't have it but looking at a friend's, and I can speed-read so I have a chance to read the book before I die, but what to do about generating dozens and dozens of planets before I disintegrate totally to dust?

Thanks.

Only...how about a thing to chop up a sector into 16 convenient printable subsector maps? And I'll want to name my own planets; how do I incorporate that in the .csv for example?

Note: for CC3 owners

Just a note the .sec file that can be used by Travellermap.com is also the right input for the CC3/Cosmographer 3 sector mapping utility.

Ah, that's a nice touch!

Sorry, I missed your post and only saw it now.

The subsector maps are still in preparation, but will be included in one of the next updates. As well as uploading the (edited) CSV file again. You would enter the desired world name in the 5th column. After uploading, the map will be re-rendered.

To be honest, I have been somewhat frustrated by what T5 really is and that there has been no errata update for a long time now, not even feedback on the state of things like what will be in a Player's Book or what to expect in the future of T5, and all that led to lost enthusiasm on my side. Other projects demanding attention were of no help either.

But I will continue to work on the project tonight and hope to be able to offer an update soon.

I just uploaded a quick subsector drill-down so that printing subsectors (and thereby more readable maps) is possible.

Tomorrow, I will collect the suggestions from this thread and decide what to do next. So if you have any ideas, just post them here.
