Update: WordMaker, Design

I just updated the web site, adding a WordMaker for Vilani words and using it throughout to generate names for beasts, homeworlds, sectors. I also started changing the design to look more Traveller-ish.

Update: Added the SectorMaker preview today. It's using SVG for the map (that is not supported by all browsers). If you experience any problems, please let me know (and include your browser's name and version).

Thanks thalassogen

Terrific random generators there. I like the random stats generator at the top, that will be most useful to try for a few characters. Having said that, who can't resist using there sexy new dice? I sure can't. :)

I am currently playing with my upcoming GunMaker's random mode and got an "Advanced Heavy Stench Projector Hiver -15". That tickles some memory - weren't the Hivers those sophonts that based some of their commo on odors? Or am I misremembering some fact?

...weren't the Hivers those sophonts that based some of their commo on odors?

From GDW's Alien Module 7, p.5:

"The Sense of Smell: The prehistoric pre-Hiver depended more on smell than on sight in dealing with the environment. A chance mutation in the pre-Hiver disabled the smell-brain (that portion of the brain which concentrates on processing smell data) and forced the sight-brain to assume dominance. It was this dominance of the sight-brain which led the way to intelligence for the Hivers. Depending on sight forced the Hiver [sic] more toward manipulation of objects; sight allows a finer dexterity than does smell. Many feel that a smell-oriented brain cannot process as much data as efficiently as a sight-oriented brain.

"However, since the dawn of recorded Hiver history, a major mutation has occurred: the re-enabling of the smell-brain. [skip a bit, Brother]

"The genetic basis for the re-enabled smell brain [sic], however, is a complex one, and one which has not lent itself to rapid dissemination into the general population. Today, after more than 5,000 years in the gene pool, the re-enabled smell brain [sic] is present in only about half of all Hivers."

Also keep in mind that the Hivers are the ones who commonly use odor emitters as weapons against the K'kree, so this weapon makes good sense.

Thanks for remembering that :).

GDW Alien Module 2, p.3:

"Smell is the sharpest of the K'kree senses. Their works of art concentrate upon olfactory rather than visual or auditory elements (although these are often present). [skip skip skip] Due to their sensitive noses they are uncomfortable on worlds with tainted atmospheres, even with filter masks, but this does not prevent them from operating of such worlds."

I am planning on extending SectorMaker by the following features:
- download of map as SVG
- download of system details as CSV
- upload of your own CSV for map generation

What do you think? Any other features SectorMaker could need?

If it's not too much to cram into those little hexes, maybe hex numbers to make it easier to find worlds?
Oh wait, I see now, you've got a little mouse-over thing happening there. sweet! So I guess just maybe for the printouts then, although you probably have already thought of that so just ignore me then.

But I do want to say how much I appreciate all this work. You've been busy! Great job, and thanks!

Hi, Murdoc, I'm glad you like it. Just added the hex numbers to the sector map. They are small, very small. You have to zoom in (Ctrl + mouse wheel; Ctrl + 0 to go back to 100%) to really read them, but the more readable subsector maps will definitely benefit from these numbers. BTW, you can download the map by right-clicking and selecting "save image..." or something like this. Inkscape is a good SVG-tool that allows you further editing of the sector map.
