Flight School is a special assignment that grants the Pilot Cadet upon successful completion of training the right and privilige of, including the title, "Pilot" as well as the duties. One of those duties is you pay the Imperium for all that fine extra training with an extra year of service. The only promotion you get is from Cadet to Pilot Officer.
I like the Pilot Officer sobriquet, very Commonwealth and Empire

But my reading of p100. is that you enter Flight School with Rank O1 so they student pilot would enter as an Ensign/2ndLieutenant not a Cadet. I think this is in line with the US system of pilots starting as "Nuggets". [EDIT] Reading the sequence Character Generation Checklist p78 Flight School comes before selecting a career but you've already got your commission so I can see your "extra year" being correct and happening before the first 4 year term. Hmmm this produces slightly more "mature" pilot officers....we can fix that with chemicals

Also does Flight School influence Branch selection, because T5 Officers can't change branch (boo-hiss) would a Naval Ensign in Flight School automatically enter the Flight Branch? It doesn't matter so much for Army and Marine Officers because Pilot is a useful skill with Grav Flyers.
