General Recap of my first session from March 2025

GreeneMan

SOC-5
This is a recap of the first half of my first session of my Traveller campaign from March 2025. At that time I had three players and an NPC.

Traveller Session One - "Ghost Ship"

March 15, 2025

1. Prelude:

The window on the outside of the Old Man's office showed the immediate area around the Regina Highport. Ships leaving and arriving contrasted with maintenance crews flitting about the station. As the Highport slowly rotated, the view also included the surface of the planet Regina, and beyond that, the gas giant Assiniboia about which Regina orbited. The stars in the background were bright as always. Garbol never tired of this.

"Have I ever mentioned that you are the most paranoid person that I have ever met?"

Lieutenant Commander Marakal Garbol looked back at the Old Man and smiled. "At least once a week, sir."

"That is why you are perfect for this job, Garbol,” said the Old Man. "You are the assistant chief security officer for the Regina Highport, and there is no one else I would trust with this investigation. Soon you will be in charge."

"Thank you, sir. Enjoy your retirement."

"I will, Garbol."

Garbol sat down across from the Old Man and paused before replying. The Old Man's impending retirement was involuntary, and Garbol knew that his own career was now in peril. He had worked with the Old Man for several years and like everyone else in Security, never referred to the leader by his given name. Garbol also learned that despite looking like a kindly grandfather, his supervisor had no human feelings whatsoever. A lifetime of security work had turned the Old Man into a cold-hearted shell, and Garbol wondered if he was also destined for the same fate.

"Everything is ready for the mission. sir. We have the crew and a ship".

"Are you sure that you found the right people?".

"Absolutely, sir. None of the four have never been in the Regina system before, and they have never met each other. Thrust, Masamune and Smith have been mustering out of their respective services for the past several weeks, and we have had all of four of them under surveillance for some time."

Garbol waved a hand, and holovid images of the four appeared above the desk. Each image rotated slowly; and underneath each was their name, universal profile and service record.

"The first is Captain Maximilian Thrust, Army. As I mentioned before, I served with him. We saw combat together; he is a good leader, reliable, and I can vouch for his character. Second, Gethin Masamune of the Imperial Interstellar Scout Service has an exemplary record. He doesn't know it yet, but he will be reactivated back into the service and his scout ship will be re-armed for the mission. The Sector Scout Leader from the local base personally recommended him for this mission and will be at the briefing. Finally, the career bureaucrat known as John Smith is just slippery enough that he can be useful in trade negotiations and in other, uh, capacities. He is a brilliant and accomplished administrator but was involved in some murky dealings. Smith was almost kicked out of the bureaucracy and sent to prison for suspected corruption before his retirement. The local head of the Imperial Forward Planning Bureau said that Smith will do as he is told and will also be here to scare him into compliance."

"Put a thief to catch some thieves? I like the sound of that, Garbol. John Smith? That is an odd sounding name."

"It's ancient Solomani slang, but we do have his real identity on record."

"How about the fourth one?"

"Brett? He is a veteran space hand who bounced around the Spinward Marches for years. A reliable shipmate but weak where money is concerned. Brett was recently arrested and locked up planet side just a short distance away from the Regina Downport. His crime? He was gambling with some Sword Worlders in a dive bar. They accused Brett of cheating, swore a blood oath of vengeance and tried to kill him. He escaped their wrath but was arrested for, get this, illegal gambling! As you know, the laws on Regina are so strict and complex that one could be jailed for years for that. I called in a favor with a friend in law enforcement down there, sprung Brett and promised that if he completes this mission, his arrest record will disappear. Brett swore to me that he would never go down to Regina again. My reply was that angry Sword Worlders are outside of my jurisdiction, so he needs to stay alert."

Garbol smiled and continued. "After the briefing later today, we will move them and their belongings to a secure location near the docking facility. As for Brett, the first three will not meet him until Masamune's ship is ready to leave, which should be in about two days."

Garbol motioned with his hand, and the holovid images of the four vanished.

"Excellent work, Garbol. Keep me up to date on your progress. That is all."

"Thank you, sir. Goodbye."

Garbol stood up and walked towards the office door. Just before he opened it, the Old Man whispered, "Trust no one, Marakal. Especially in the mainstream". Garbol held in his surprise, opened then closed the door behind him and walked down the hall. In all the years that he had worked security, the Old Man had never called him by his first name. Perhaps he was human after all.

2. The Briefing.

Masamune, Thrust and Smith each receive a summons to appear at the security office of the Regina Highport. There they are met by Lt Commander Marakal Garbol, the assistant security chief for the Highport. Garbol walks over, greets Thrust and they chat briefly. The two served together in the Imperial Army and became friends.

Garbol introduces himself and then the other two people on his side of the conference table. On his left is Chijam, a high-ranking bureaucrat from the Imperial Forwarding Planning Commission. Chijam is a Bwap, and like many of his amphibian kind, is swaddled in robes to keep himself moist. On Garbol's right is Drent, the senior Scout leader for the Regina subsector. She was a tall woman with silver-tinged short dark hair in the dress uniform of the Scouts. Masamune has never met Drent in person, but her record in the Scout service was legendary.

Garbol tells the three that they have been tasked to perform a mission. There has been a recent number of small ships that have disappeared in nearby systems and are presumed taken by pirates. All of them had valuable cargoes but were never heard from again. There have been just enough of these incidents to be noticed but not enough to cause a panic. All the disappearances took place within several parsecs of Regina. The players ask questions of Garbol, and he answers as best as he can. Garbol suggests that there is a network in several outlying systems working in concert to spy on outgoing cargoes, and that there may be a link to persons unknown in here in Regina.

Administrator Chijam asks Garbol how he knew that this was organized. Garbol replies that there was no other logical answer. Chijam nods, then stares intently at Smith.

Garbol's plan is to send the PCs out to Ruie with a valuable cargo of precious metals. Ruie is only one parsec away, a week's jump, but is outside of the Imperium. There they will attempt to sell the metals. Garbol wants to use Masamune's scout ship, the Respite From Shadows. Masamune interjects that he has just retired, but Drent replies that both he and the Respite have been recalled to service.

"What about my shipboard weapons?"

"We are reinstalling them right now."

During the back and forth, Garbol notices that Chijam has been staring directly at Smith, and Smith looks both nervous and sweaty.

The three are also told that there will be a fourth person added to the mission. Brett is a veteran space hand and has gunner skills among others. The three obviously do not like to be used as bait but are told that they will be well rewarded. As they leave, Drent takes Masamune aside and tells him that she respects his record and expects him to succeed. Chijam glares at Smith without blinking until the later leaves the meeting. The three are told that they will be moved to secure quarters near their ship.

Here is the second half:
3. The Mission.

In the two days before they are ready to leave, the three meet Brett. He seems reliable enough but keeps on harping about the "bonus situation".

After refitting with weapons, Masamune's scout ship Respite From Shadows eventually leaves outbound for Ruie. It will take about four hours to get to the one hundred diameter safety zone for jumping out of system.

Just as they are about to get to the jump point, their sensors detect a ship coming perpendicular across their flight path several thousand klicks ahead. There are no responses to messages, and curiously enough, no transponder pings from the ship. Standard procedure dictates that ships in distress must be investigated.

After sending a brief message back to Garbol on Regina about the apparent derelict, the crew of the Respite From Shadows decide to get close and board. Masamune brings the Respite alongside the Octavius, a 200-ton Beowulf class Free Trader. There is no sign of external damage. The Beowulf class ship is a popular ship design, and the players can call up deck plans. The Octavius has three decks, with the airlock access on the middle deck. After connecting the ships with the boarding tube and hacking the airlock cover, Brett walks in with Thrust following while Masamune and Smith stay behind on the Respite. Both Brett and Thrust are wearing their vacc suits, are carrying weapons, and have their helmet cameras on. In the Octavius, lights are on and apparently the atmosphere is working as well.

As they begin to explore the Octavius, they go into a room on the right which should be where the low berths are kept. Thrust covers Brett as he enters. Brett notices blood on the floor right in front of one of the berths. They both go in and see that the berth is occupied by a young human woman who is heavily bandaged. The controls indicate that she is alive but in suspended animation. All this information is sent back to the Respite.

Thrust then decides to go forward and check out the bridge, with Brett in the lead. They pass through the crew area. Food is still on the table. Eventually they get to the bridge. The seat to the left which is traditionally occupied by the ship's captain has blood on it. The console on the co-pilots station to the right has apparently been hacked, and Masamune back at the Respite says that that is why the transponder is not working. The characters think it would be a good idea to check any ships recordings of the bridge and any logs by the crew members.

Thrust then decides to go back through the crew area and explore the cargo hold. Once again, Brett is in the lead, and everything he sees is on his helmet camera for Masamune and Smith to view back on the Respite. Brett opens the door and looks in the cargo bay, looking from right to left. The entire bay is full of robots standing at rest. Thrust, who studied Robotics science in his Army service, recognizes two Agricultural worker robots and about ten Labour droids on the right side of the cargo bay.

What gives them pause on the left, however, are three Clearance 600 Crowd Dispersal Units with the remains of a fourth on the deck; and scattered at their feet are three human corpses. Thrust knows that the Clearance robots are armed with a stunner, a grenade launcher and massive fists. These are combat robots but appear to be powered down. Thrust and Brett immediately but slowly back out of the cargo bay and lock the hatch behind them.

Thrust, Masamune and Smith discuss what to do next but agree that they need to go through the Octavius logs to see if they can figure out what happened. After some work hacking the ship's computers, they find out that Captain Grozain of the Octavius was lamenting that he kept losing crew to desertion while on Ruie and was down to only three people (including himself). He was able to find a qualified and very competent spacer named Yatara, and with her assistance completed a deal with his remaining funds to buy robots there.

Thrust noted that combat droids are usually illegal for civilians to buy in the Imperium, but Ruie is just outside of Imperial space. To continue, the characters also found out that Captain Grozain planned to take to robots to Kinorbes for sale. Kinorbes is only two parsecs from Ruie but is also in the Imperium. Finally, Grozain mentioned that they had made some extra money with three people booking passage in low berth.

After exhaustively going back through the Octavius's internal monitors, they found footage of Yatara going into the low berths with a shoulder bag, waking up the three sleeping passengers, and giving them weapons. They also found footage of her going up to the bridge and shooting Captain Grozain in the back of the head. There was no footage of what they did to the other two crew but Thrust, Masamune and Smith assumed that they were also killed and removed from the Octavius.

The last footage they discovered was of Yatara and her three associates in the cargo bay. The four of them were arguing in front of the combat droids. One of them was attempting to activate a droid while another was trying to stop them; suddenly one of the combat droids came to life and bludgeoned the pirate with a large metal fist. Soon, all four of the combat droids are moving and grappling with the hapless pirates. One of the four pirates dragged a wounded Yatara out of the cargo bay presumably to the low berth room where she was put into suspended animation. That person came back just in time to find the other two down on the deck only to be killed himself. Somehow, the pirates managed to down one of the droids. The final scene on the monitor showed the three remaining combat droids checking to see that the pirates were dead before powering down and resuming their sleep mode.

After one last look at the bridge controls, the players conclude that the pirates disposed of the original crew before making the jump from Ruie to Regina. The fatal encounter with the combat robots then took place during the week-long jump, so the ship was on autopilot for several days until it came out of hyperspace in the Regina system.

Masamune suggests that they send another message back to Regina with what they have found. After a short delay, they are told to bring the Octavius back to Regina, that there will be a ship sent out to escort them home, and to maintain radio silence until otherwise instructed. Thrust and Brett both have Pilot skill, so they decide to stay with the Octaviuswhile Masamune and Smith stay on the Respite From Shadows. The players also decide to leave Yatara asleep in the Low Berth. Before they come back, Masamune goes over to the Octavius and finds some interesting items. One is a metal bracelet with a kill switch for all the droids, and the other is a pulse rifle designed to immobilize robots. He keeps them both.

The Octavius and the Respite From Shadows are both slow, so it will take about four hours to get back to Regina. While on the way back, they are met by a much faster 400-ton Navy patrol corvette about two hours later and are then escorted back to Regina.

After they return all four of them - Masamune, Thrust, Smith and Brett are debriefed by Lt. Commander Garbol. He thanks them for what they have done and asks them to wait for further instructions.

4. Dénouement

Once again, Garbol sat across from the Old Man in the security chief's office. But this time, he was seated in the commander's chair, while the Old Man sat across where was Garbol several weeks previously.

"Congratulations on your promotion, Commander. It's your desk now."
"Thank you, sir".
"We were both lucky and unlucky this time."
Garbol paused for a minute then replied. "I'll take luck wherever I find it. Now we know for sure that there are pirates out there. I've made some inquiries on Yatara and her accomplices. Ruie is outside our jurisdiction, and it will take some time, but I will keep digging. Four people like that must leave a trail. On the other hand, it's a shame that Yatara did not survive low berth. Her injuries were too severe. I had a lot of questions for her."

The Respite From Shadows mission was not the first time they had tried to investigate the recent spate of piracy in nearby systems. The previous two attempts ended in failure when the ships and crews that were sent out vanished never to be heard from again. This is why the Old Man was forced into retirement. Garbol knew that the crew of the Respitecould not be told about that.

"One last thing, Marakal," replied the Old Man.

Garbol flinched inside but maintained his work face. This was only the second time the Old Man used his first name.

"It's a shame the Navy got involved."

"It couldn't be helped, sir. The two ships had to have an escort, and the Navy was the obvious choice. They would have intercepted the message from the Respite anyway."

"Just the same, now the Navy knows. Which means that if your suspicions are correct, this will eventually get back to the pirates and the people behind them."

The Old Man stood up, then so did Garbol, who walked around the desk extending his hand.

"If anyone can pull this off, you can".

"Thank you, sir".

"Goodbye, Garbol".

Commander Garbol stood silently for some time after the Old Man left.
