Pay No Attention To That Man...

I don't think it's either to be honest - it was always apparent to me that it was the 'transition' book. It wasn't MT and it wasn't TNE either because it was set mostly in the time between the two periods.

For those of you who took the setting to its logical conclusion, what did you decide was...

BEHIND THE BLACK CURTAIN???
DLO,

First, you really need to look at the TNE setting again. You'll like it.

Second, neither Dave Nilsen's revelations about the Black Curtain here at COTI or MJD's take on the subject in M:1248 came as a surprise to anyone. Everyone I ever spoke with and/or wrote to about the subject had pretty much the same idea. To whit: It was a Viral Empire with Lucan mixed up in it somehow.

Of course, the minor details in everyone's version were different. For instance, I know of only a few who bothered to add the K'Kree to the mix like the Nilsen/MJD versions did. The little details didn't matter though as everyone pretty much had the Black Curtain figured out already.

The real question you should be asking is "What happened to the Vargr?" Neither Nilsen or M:1248 has much to say on that matter.

First, in MT's Rebellion Sourcebook, you've got 'Oekhsos', a synthetic personality developed to sell/present music via a programmable, interactive holoprojector/viewer called an 'utuvogh'. The anti-Imperial rants that are 'Oekhsos' trademark are supposedly popular enough to sway any more moderate opinions. Because the 'utuvogh' can adjust 'Oekhsos' to account for an individual's likes and dislikes, 'Oekhsos' can come across as the person every Vargr most wants in their life. Vargr individuals, organizations, and governments are thus supposedly easily coaxed by the 'Oekhsos' personality into attacking the Imperium.

Next, in TNE's Regency Sourcebook and other materials, there are maddening hints regarding what used to be the Vargr Extents. Something is developing out there. The mercurial nature of Vargr society and psychology are apparently allowing some sort of Virus-Vargr compromise to be reached. How it is happening and what actually is happening no one knows, but the Vargr seem to be learning how to live with Virus and Virus seem to be learning how to live with the Vargr.

There are further hints of a 'meta-identity' developing. Some Vargr in the Regency have formed a criminal organization called the 'Pack' which is odd in its persistence, control, and stability. The operations of the 'Pack' seemed to be aimed at funneling goods and monies out of the Regency and into the former Extents.

So, what happened to the Vargr? Thanks to an 'infection route' into the Vargr psyche provided Virus by the 'utuvogh' and 'Oekhsos', do the Vargr now have a LIVING GOD whom they eagerly serve and obey?

Have fun,
Bill

Or, more likely, _many_ of them.

Possibly including Brzk, and lots of other Vargr leaders who used utovogh technology in their propaganda.

Charismatic Viruses. I love 'em.

The Vargr are also independent enough to take orders from no machine. Remember, Vargr Charisma depends upon deeds not words.

I always liked the idea of a pseudoreality program trying to unite several sections of the Vargr. In the end, I see them like the French longing to create their Napoleon. First, in MT as a tragedy then in TNE as a farce with the multiple recreations of 'Oekhsos' appearing to even war with each other would lead the Vargr to unity after Lair was nuked by one 'utuvogh' faction.

Hmmm, very interesting. I came up with a scenario a while back where a Robot got infected with Virus and became conscious. He diguised himself and went around Known Space then created a Fellowship-type of university.

When does TNE: 1248 come out?

Have you read the TNE supplement Vampire Fleets?

Your questions are answered there

Sounds interesting.

I remember there being a Challenge article about a sentient robot masquerading as a merchant.

Have you tried TNE at all? As others have said, you'd probably find a lot in it to like.
