MegaLiner "New Titanic" class (Its actually new new new new Titanic)

For some historic noted technically the original class would be the Olympic class since Olympic commissioned first followed by Titanic and finally Britannic. We all know the historic fate of Titanic, Britannic was torpedoes in WW1 (I believe but am not sure, she was a hospital ship at the time). These were all operated by the White Star line and were built under government subsidy. In Traveller perhaps the White Dwarf Line?

Generally the liners ending in -ia such as Lusitania, Mauritania, Carpathia etc belonged to their rivals Cunard which eventually took over White Star (I think). Liners ending in -ic were generally White Star vessels. Not sure if Pacific and Orient (P&O) had a consistant naming policy. At the time they were built the Olympics for White Star and the Lusitania and Mauritania were mega liners. now dwarfed by current big liners. Can easily see something like these being slotted into many Traveller backgrounds.

Hence my earlier post... Britannic was impressed into service with the Royal Navy, converted to a hospital ship, and sent to the Aegean to deal with the casualties from the Gallipoli campaign.

In that role, on her 6th trip into the area, she struck a mine off the Greek island of Kea, in the Kea Channel, on 21 November 1916, and sank with the loss of 30 lives (she went under 55 minutes after the explosion).

There were no patients aboard at that time, and most of the casualties were on 2 lifeboats that had been launched without permission and were pulled into the still-turning propellers (the captain was trying to beach her, as Kea was only 3 miles away).

Initially it was thought that she had been torpedoed, and this theory persisted for decades... but the German Navy's submarine patrol records show no subs that were in that area at that time reported attacking a large ship.

Additionally, U-73 had earlier laid a series of mines in the area, a set of mine anchors were found in the immediate area in 2003, and the area had been swept for mines (with some found and destroyed) in the months and years after the sinking.

I like White Dwarf Line actually fully fits in with the adventure i am running.....

An idea that i quite like is that some lonley ensigns at the starport come up with the name of the ships. so they skim the historical library and find names that are relivant to Humaniti's history at some point in time and name the starship!

As long as the future resurrection of the Red Star Line doesn't see the corresponding name change... Kryten.

Then there is the Blue Star Line... the Andora Star was carrying German & Italian internees and POWs from Britain to Canada in 1940 when it was torpedoed and sunk by U-47.
They also have an interesting history relating to Solomani (er... Somali) pirates*.

Black Star Line

Green Star Steamship Corporation

Yellow Star Line

How many others are there??

* Blue Star, after several sales, ended up as part of the AP Muller/Maersk Group (see Maersk Alabama).

For Traveller, I think some others would be obvious:

Dwarf Star Line
Giant Star Line
Neutron Star Line

With White Star Line, and, my favorite, their competitors - Degenerate Star Line... :D

cargo space

each high psg is entitled 1 t of cargo and each mdl psg 100k and Lw psg 10 k so 34 tons are ok...but where is the 5 tons mail hold?

Ships owners love money, although the number of steward on a luxury liner might be beyond statutory minimum and price of passage ajusted to reflect "luxury" status, I wonder as to the economic of that ship. Have you computed your break even point? What is it?

Selandia

By the way, no offense intended, P & O is the acronym for Peninsular & Oriental, from its early days when the line was trading to Hiberic peninsula and the orient was Beyrouth and Istambul (as in the "Orient Express" train)

That was my first thought, too. :D

I had thought that the USSR had a "Red Star Line," but I can't find any evidence of it online.

International Merchant registries would not have liked seeing two companies with the same name... even if they were in different languages.

Since the Red Star Line was founded in 1871 (re-using the name of a defunct company that had been founded in 1818 and went out of business in 1867), and was still in existence until broken up by the German government in 1939 (having been sold in 1934 and renamed Red Star Linie G.m.b.H, Hamburg, and confiscated from its Jewish owner in 1937), the name was not available until WW2.

Besides, Soviet shipping was state-run, so use of a commercial name would have been frowned on. A good socialist name would have been used.

The name of the state agency quoted in shipping registery as manager of the ships whose beneficiary owner was the USSR governement ( the equivalent of the United State Maritime Commission for the US I believe) was (in latin letter) "Sovtorgfloot" there were naval forces rejoicing at time in the (translated) name of "Red Banner fleet" and "Red star fleet", but those were military morale booster name and I am uncertain of date and place.

From time to time I while away the idle hour by taking a likely-looking encyclopedia article and transpose it to the Far Future.Coming up with analogues of people, places, and events adds depth and verisimilitude to my Traveller Universe, and it gives me another irrelevant library data entry among which I can hide the articles that ARE relevant to the campaign from my players (I do a similar thing with newspaper articles for my campaign newspaper though that is often just to fill out the word count).

The article about the Red Star Line inspired me to come up with another such library data entry:

Red Crown Line: The Red Crown Line is an interstellar passenger line founded in 1037 as a joint venture between the Interstellar Astrogation Company of Regni, which also ran the Reginan Line, and the Société Anonyme de Astrogation Regina-Junidienne of Paris-Neuve, Junidy. The company's main ports of call are Junidy and Aramanx in Aramis Subsector and Regina and Inthe in the Regina Subsector.

Owners

The company was founded by Anne-Marie Ruiz, who led it from its founding until the Interstellar Mercantile Fleet, LIC took it over in 1068. Red Crown Line survived IMF's financial crisis in 1081. In the 1090's Red Crown Line became part of Dirirra Gimlamraa Line.

Ships

Red Crown Line ships has a broad black stripe running around the ship's centerline with a slanted white band flanked by two thin white bands bearing a five-pointed red crown. The house badge is white with a red crown and a black border.

Some Red Crown ships were given names ending in "-world". Notable Red Crown ships included:

Cultural Impact

The Red Crown Line appears in Cituba Jenec's holodrama The Patron Part II when the young Fastred Witt arrives in Credo. His identification badge is from the Red Crown Line company.

In the city of Paris-Neuve, Beaupays, Junidy, the former buildings of the Red Crown Line branch office were recently landmarked and will reopen as a museum in 1118. The works of art of the Red Crown Line commercials made by the Paris-Neuve artist Dianne Braud (1041-1096) will be exhibited there next to Red Crown Line memorabilia of the collection of Acelin Roux.
This also helps me to not always do things the same old way. Left to my own, I would have meticulously provided the exact same amount of information about each ship and probably stated that the list was complete. But if Wikipedia can provide anything from just a name to several lines, why shouldn't the Duchy of Regina Information Service do the same?

The date of this article is 1116, the default date of Traveller Wiki articles.
