Firefly

Hi all,

I'm new here, and the reason for my arrival is the late, great sci-fi/western TV show from the mind of Joss Whedon known as Firefly. This show has ruined me for other TV/movies and I've become obsessed with finding a way to live in its universe. Thus, I want to make it into an RPG setting. Traveller seems perfect for it. The main points would be:

1. No aliens. Everyone is human.

2. No Jump drive. Strictly sublight speeds, but the setting is packed to the gills with terraformed planets and moons, most likely one humongous solar system with a very large habitable zone. Based on dialogue in the scripts, it seems that there's 70+ different planets in the system, and hundreds of inhabited planets/moons. Transit time, even without Jump, is a matter of months at the most.

3. Tech level varies from planet to planet, with the outer rim being about a 4, and the core planets more like 12.

4. Psionics exist, but they are very rare, and seem to invariably be the result of government experiments/brain tampering.

5. English and Chinese are the 2 most widely-spoken languages, and most people speak both fluently. In fact, it's fairly common for people to use both in the same sentence. Example: "The captain's jen duh sh tyen tsai when it comes to plans."

6. New slang and curses:
Shiny- Cool.

Hump- F**k, used as a noun or verb (so you wouldn't say "that's humpin' stupid" but you would say "Hump off" or "We're humped."

Ruttin'- F**king, used only as an adjective (so you wouldn't say "Rut off" or "We are so rutted" but you would say "that is ruttin' stupid."

Gorram- Corrpution of G**D*mn.

'verse- Universe.

7. 6 years prior to the show's main timeline, a group called the Anglo-Sino Alliance (AKA the Alliance for short) united the formerly independent planets under their rule. Those who fought them were called Independents or Browncoats (after their military uniform.) After the war ended, many Browncoats migrated to the rim to be as far from the Alliance's oppressive rule as possible.

8. Most ships aren't armed. The Alliance cruisers (which are the size of a city block) have some kind of energy or plasma cannons and a contigent of gunships, but independent ship owners generally can't afford such things. If you're attacked by an armed ship, you pretty much gotta run.

9. There are people who've been driven mad by their exposure to the great nothingness of space. These individuals, known as Reavers, are completely irrational and care nothing for their own survival. They prowl space, attacking ships and colonies, raping, killing, and cannibalizing at random.

So, once I pick up a corebook, I'll be setting my game in this 'verse.

Welcome to this 'verse citizen, you'll find a lot of fans of Firefly here too, just do a search and check the posts. There was a lot of debate about the size of the Firefly systems/space and if or not the ship used ftl drives. That said I like your ideas and I think you have a great start there.

Welcome fellow Firefly fanatic. I'm sure you'll soon discover that Traveller is the perfect way to create a Firefly gaming 'verse. Have fun.

Now, if you need me, I'll be in my bunk. ;)

Welcome in the name of Traveller. Can't say much about Firefly 'cause I couldn't get into the one episode I tried to watch.

Just one observation, about space travel. The second voice-over intro makes it clear that Firefly is not meant to be set in a single implausibly big solar system. (It refers to settling the galaxy or words to that effect.) So there does seem to be some FTL drive, though it's never defined. It probably works like a Star Trek warp drive, since you can interact with the rest of the universe in transit between systems.

As far as game mechanics, I think you could do it using anything you like without too much trouble. There's really nothing about any Traveller mechanics that would make them especially suitable, IMO. I'm not a huge d20 fan, so I'm looking running at a Firefly game using TriStat (the system from Big Eyes, Small Mouth), which is my favorite generic game engine.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the TV series. Much more down to earth then, dare I say it, many Star Trek episodes (no Trader Jim, I'm not about to attack Star Wars). Much grittier and probably closer to what many of us envision the Traveller universe to be like.

However, even the producers admitted that they screwed up by not releasing the 2-hour premiere first to introduce the characters and how they came to make up the ship's crew. After about 6 (?) or so hour-long episodes they finally coughed up the 2 hour intro that more clearly introduced the characters and the details surrounding how they got on the ship. This was a last gasp as the show was immediately cancelled. The first 6 episodes tickled you with brief overviews and some flashbacks but it took the 2-hour episode to explain much of the history. And, everybody here will likely agree how important the backstory is in fully fleshing out a character. :D

It wasn't the producers. It was Fox. Fox pulled the pilot, Fox pre-empted the show for the World Series and Happy Gilmore, and Fox shoved it into the Fridays at 8:00 slot o' death. Believe me, Joss Whedon (creator, writer, producer) is plenty miffed at all this. However, based on what some of the actors are saying (they post on the official boards, how cool is that?), Joss has a plan to continue the story.

Also, I've seen an eBay auction for one of the press kits, and one of the items in it is a map of the Alliance. The pic only showed the front cover, which said "NGC 3242" on it. NGC 3242 is in fact a real celestial object, specifically the planetary nebula known as the "Ghost of Jupiter." I contacted the winner of the auction, who is willing to try to get scans of the map as well as blueprints of the ship and other materials, posted online. He doesn't have a scanner himself, but he's trying to find somebody who'll let him use theirs.

Dang it! If it isn't my memory failing me it's my information source.

It would be great to see this show rise from the ashes and make a comeback. I'm sure a lot of video recorders would suddenly be turned on to capture this on tape just in case it dies a second death. I think I've still got the 2-hour intro episode but probably taped over the others, figuring I could tape the summer re-runs. Boy, sure blew it there!

Much like the Space Rangers TV series. Lasted about 5 or 6 episodes and then it too went away. But somehow Andromeda continues to hang on. :D

Shows get canceled because they stink.

There are many terrible shows out there that assault my eyes. This pile is near the top. Poor characters, lame acting, Boring Humanocentric idea. This show is so bad, it makes Enterprise (barf) look like Lord of the Rings. Sitting through every episode made me wish that the reaper would come and take me into his bony clutches. When shows suck this bad it makes the spotty image of modern science fiction shows even spottier.
Joss needs his pencil taken away after this stinkeroo. Is that Willow I hear sobbing in the distance?

Space Cowboys... who knew?

(BTW, Farscape rules)

That's not always the reason. I'll give you a little example. The series "JAG" started on NBC. It was frequently pre-empted because of sporting events and other "specials," never found its audience and suffered in the ratings. NBC cancelled it after one season, but did let it stay on the air for the entire season.

Something interesting happened when the reruns started airing; the ratings went up. It started airing consistently, and it found an audience. But NBC still decided to not bring it back for another season.

But the production company shopped it around, and CBS bought it. Now it's a consistent Top 20 hit for CBS, and usually wins its time slot.

You're entitled to your opinion, but I don't believe "Firefly" was cancelled because it stinks.

And remember, too--while Farscape may rule, it has been cancelled. It was, I believe, deemed not cost effective. Although it was popular, it cost too much compared to the amount of revenue it was bringing in. Or some lame excuse like that.

Yeah, Farscape cost too much to keep it up. The key is having aggresive marketing/merchandising, which they didnt really do so well. Surprising that that's the case, as they got "Muppet Bucks" behind em. Sci Fi is tough to keep on the air due to economics, and its even harder when you've got the SciFi channel up in your grill. They did a bad, bad thing in cancelling that one. I hope they wrap it up good at least.

Sure Paraquat (that name rules, by the way), JAG is a good example of a crappy scheduling, Im not a fan of it, but I admire what a trooper that show is! It's been on forever! Do you know how many seasons?

Ok ok, I might have been a little harsh. To say that ENTERPRISE is better than anything was just wrong of me. I apologize. I dont know, after watching them all (fireflys) It all just seemed a little "Ice Pirates" to me. I have a heard time forgiving Joss for "Angel" (and that whole willow thing) and maybe that colors my view of the newer show. Either that or it actually does stink.

Has anyone ever seen some show called "Starhunter"? I saw it on for like
two minutes when i was running out the door, and couldn't get enough to judge it harshly.

Hey, whats a point without a counterpoint?

I personally liked "Firefly". It reminded me of our old Traveller games.

I never liked "Farscape", it just reminded me of muppets in space. I had a harder time losing myself in it.

Now, I'm not saying it sucked. In fact it was probably good, I just had trouble getting into it. No frame of reference I guess.

"Firefly" died because someone put it on friday nights and they did'nt let the creator, unveil it as it should have been.

This is a concept the marketing guys don't always seem to understand. They should let the story guys do their jobs. They know, most of the time, how to write a story.

Imagine if "Firefly" would have been on right before Enterprise or right after? What a powerhouse one, two punch that would be.

Ah well, to dream!

Preempting it on its second week for a movie is a great way to stop people watching it. It's the FOX way of doing it. They've been doing it for many shows, shuffling them around the timeslots without warning 'till everyone's abandoned hope of ever catching it on the same day, same time two weeks in a row.

They Know everything the public wants, they know they're right and that everybody want to be force-fed those shows. They meddles in settings, story, props, cast etc.

B5 Crusade was an example (they changed uniform right after 1 or 2 eps, and was woven into the story as being a "PR coup from the EarthGov" ;p)

ST: Voyager was "saved" by a babe in skintight uniform (7of9). She wasn't bad, but we all know why they choose her. It wasn't for those prostetic borg toys she had on her face...

Unfortunately, right now it isn't SciFi that has the favor but Reality Shows. Reality game shows are good to throw to the proles too, since they don't tend to make them think ;p

Have to say I like all of these shows. Well, with the exception that Jag is worn out.

Farscape has changed a bit over time. Presently, I think they're going for the bigger is better approach and its breaking the bank. 1st & 2nd season ruled. Popped into their 1st convention in Burbank and had a great time. They were great fun.

Now, Firefly just needed time and the right timeslot. I think the first few scripts needed
some umph. Angel has had some interesting twists but appears to be trying to revamp itself. ;)

I guess my present favorites are Buffy and Stargate. The Willow thing was expected and handled well.

Savage

I hear ya savage...

The Mrs. swears by both Buffy and Angel, but me, I just dont dig the characters they picked for Angel. The stereotypical Black guy, and the squeeky and annoying "fred". Also, the choice to do the whole Baby plot and then he rapidly gros up to aid in running lines is the mark of a show in its death throes. It will be interesting to see how they manage to save it.

I cant even comment on Star Trek anymore, as im all out of Love. Nemesis did it to me.

Yes,I watch it every saturday night. It's an all right show, it's quality sometimes is about the level of some of the old Dr Who episodes. I watch it when I'm a work( I'm a residential Counselor who works w/ MR/DD people. On saturday' I pull 3rd shift w/ a client who needs 24hr services.),I end up watching it or some really bad late night movies.

www.starhunter.com has a run down of the plot. It's plot is a little like Firefly. No jump/warp/hyper drive, small crew on a beaten up ship, use "modern"(20th/21st century )Weapons.
I've come to like it, because it reminds me of my Timberwolf campagin a little. In a nutshell..Worth a look, but don't expect much.
