Hi all,
I'm new here, and the reason for my arrival is the late, great sci-fi/western TV show from the mind of Joss Whedon known as Firefly. This show has ruined me for other TV/movies and I've become obsessed with finding a way to live in its universe. Thus, I want to make it into an RPG setting. Traveller seems perfect for it. The main points would be:
1. No aliens. Everyone is human.
2. No Jump drive. Strictly sublight speeds, but the setting is packed to the gills with terraformed planets and moons, most likely one humongous solar system with a very large habitable zone. Based on dialogue in the scripts, it seems that there's 70+ different planets in the system, and hundreds of inhabited planets/moons. Transit time, even without Jump, is a matter of months at the most.
3. Tech level varies from planet to planet, with the outer rim being about a 4, and the core planets more like 12.
4. Psionics exist, but they are very rare, and seem to invariably be the result of government experiments/brain tampering.
5. English and Chinese are the 2 most widely-spoken languages, and most people speak both fluently. In fact, it's fairly common for people to use both in the same sentence. Example: "The captain's jen duh sh tyen tsai when it comes to plans."
6. New slang and curses:
Shiny- Cool.
Hump- F**k, used as a noun or verb (so you wouldn't say "that's humpin' stupid" but you would say "Hump off" or "We're humped."
Ruttin'- F**king, used only as an adjective (so you wouldn't say "Rut off" or "We are so rutted" but you would say "that is ruttin' stupid."
Gorram- Corrpution of G**D*mn.
'verse- Universe.
7. 6 years prior to the show's main timeline, a group called the Anglo-Sino Alliance (AKA the Alliance for short) united the formerly independent planets under their rule. Those who fought them were called Independents or Browncoats (after their military uniform.) After the war ended, many Browncoats migrated to the rim to be as far from the Alliance's oppressive rule as possible.
8. Most ships aren't armed. The Alliance cruisers (which are the size of a city block) have some kind of energy or plasma cannons and a contigent of gunships, but independent ship owners generally can't afford such things. If you're attacked by an armed ship, you pretty much gotta run.
9. There are people who've been driven mad by their exposure to the great nothingness of space. These individuals, known as Reavers, are completely irrational and care nothing for their own survival. They prowl space, attacking ships and colonies, raping, killing, and cannibalizing at random.
So, once I pick up a corebook, I'll be setting my game in this 'verse.
