They collect the exotic particles needed for Jump Drives to work.
They can also store them in some part of the device for at least seven weeks, possibly longer.
If that container is removable, it can then become a modular fuel tank and the ship no longer has to carry the "solar sail" around (or even very much of the accumulator unit).
Then, the ship can Jump with just charged capacitors and the bottle of exotic particles.
The method of charging the capacitors is up to you.
