• Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
  • We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.

Will T5 be here by the end of the year?

There's no new info on FFE, and I'm starting to worry T5 may disappear, leaving us with Mongoose Traveller, which I have no faith in at all.

Is T5 still coming, or should I just bite the bullet and invest in the CD for CT? $35 for an entire game system I can print out at work is very attractive. (Don't tell the boss!)

Poi, I don't think T5 will be out this year, but it's still making progress. If you're interested in playtest, send me a PM or Marc an email.

I don't know why you're worried about Mongoose Traveller... unless you know something I don't. From what I've seen, the mechanics are CT-friendly, yet seems fresh and spunky: a worthy successor to CT and a good system for playing Traveller.

And anyway, Plank is right: the CT CD-ROM is awesome, even if you're planning on getting T5. And it's here today.

My problem with Mongoose Traveller is that it will be different to T5, but close enough to confuse new players as to which they are playing, what supplements to buy etc.

I keep thinking back to Basic D&D vs AD&D. I loved the setting, but the similarities and differences between the rule sets did get complicated.

My problem with Mongoose is that they don't seem to be able to organise their way out of a paper bag. They've managed to virtually kill off two tabletop systems (Starship Troopers and Battlefield Evolution) by mismanaging them. Growing pains as they move from a small company to a mid-size one rather than fundamental problems, lovely guys though.

Really? Mismanage how?

This is also news to me. The party line goes something like: Starship Troopers doesn't have that critical mass of followers, to convince Mongoose to not tinker with the line (that's the super-abbreviated summary folks, there's more to it than that). As with most games, though, I know it has some hard core followers, and they're quite upset. As I would be.

So, I suspect Mongoose thinks that porting ST to Traveller is a better business move than not doing it.

And I thought BFE was doing well and is supported?

But, please note that I don't follow either lines and really don't know the true state of things.

Battlefield Evolution was launched to great fanfare, but the entire range has been put on hold as Mongoose failed to get production sorted before the launch.
Starship Troopers moving to Traveller isn't the problem, it's the miniatures game. The move to pre-paints, to match Battlefield Evolution, is now so far behind schedule that many fans (self included) doubt it will ever appear.

I honestly don't think it's going to be much of an issue.

T5 is unlikely to see print, and even if it does, less than likely to be carried in print stores.

It was announced for a 2006 release... in 2005. Pushed back to 2007. And to 2008.

It's been vaporware for literally a year. I doubt it will ever be finished, and unlike the D&D/AD&D dichotomy, the "advanced version" is unlikely to eclipse the basic version in popularity.

Marc has insisted upon keeping a couple of very poor elements, ones which are quite likely to result in non-play. Many elements are excessive randomization for the modern market.

So, with all due apologies to Marc, T5 is likely to be stillborn, since he's just grown too out of touch with the market.

I'd still get the CT CD regardless of what happens with T-5. The volume of information on the CD makes it a truly valuable resource regardless of version you play.

Has the CT CD been updated? I had thought about getting it but hearing that pages where upside down, missing, and tables unreadable just to mention a few made me decided to wait and see if it got updated.

You might be thinking of the MT CD. The Classic CD isn't too bad, as a lot of the multi-shading that is in many of the MT charts is what played havoc with the scanning.

The Classic CD is definitely worth getting.

There were/are some minor issues with the CT CD-ROM, but eveything's readable. And in fact it's past its first print run, and some of those issues have been fixed.

Still no sign of a release date? Mongoose have dates for their first two products (main rulebook in Feb 08 and Mercenary in Mar 08

At the web site there is a three page pdf for download with more information. We will be able to play robots, androids, and geneered beings as PC's.

Yesterday I received my pack of pre-order goodies.

Not bad time considering the Christmas mail, and the fact that I live in the middle of nowhere, and on an entirely different continent. :)
