Which Edition? Trying to not confuse Traveller5 with Traveller 5E

Has anyone had a problem yet with confusing Traveller 5 with the upcoming Traveller for D&D 5E.

Whenever I see Traveller 5E, it makes me think of Traveller 5.

I could see there being confusion.

That's because "Traveller 5E" IS NOT Traveller 5th Edition, Traveller5 is.

"Traveller 5E" is a Traveller setting played using D&D 5E game mechanics. Calling it Traveller 5E is misleading and disingenuous. T20 worked for the D20 system because it was a clear reference to the underlying game mechanic, unlike "5E".

I haven't had a problem so far as everytime I see 5e attached to a game name I assume that game's using D&D 5e as its base rules. Whenever I see T5 I assume it's Marc's latest edition. (To be honest it's very rare for me to see T5 mentioned outside of these boards or Mongoose). I'm guessing that most players coming from a D&D background with little or no Traveller experience or knowledge will assume the same. It'd be interesting to see the gaming demographics of the 1200+ signups.

Maybe T20 2.0?

I was confused when it was first announced, but then after reading the promotion it became clear.

Now that the backerkit is in pre-launch the distinction is there to see.

You currently score for a free patch if you sign up to follow the campaign then pledge, and the latest offer is a coin if you pay a $2 deposit.

Still a month to go an there have been a lot of people, over 1,200, signed up so far.

Build a pool of XP and buy higher level skills, new skills, talents with those XP. Is this levelling? Bit of a stupid rhetorical question to begin my argument point.

I am reminded of Alternity which had levels and d20M/F which had levels. By accumulating XP and spending it to improve a character, as I opened with, removes the term level from the improvement process.

The sticking point to me is that the XP improvement should be no faster than the fastest life path generation system grants increases.

IIRC this is how Mutants and Masterminds works (for those who don't know it's a d20 derivative). In fact, I have a feeling that BESM Anime 5e also works like that.

I guess the big question is whether characters start at "Level 1" at 18 years old with zero (few) skills and no experience.

Traveller chargen, naturally, races characters through that part. Basically highlighting "the mundane parts of life, going to school, starting your career, getting around in the world" are handwaved away amidst a flurry of dice rolls. The "real adventure" starts after.

IIRC, the original Chivalry & Sorcery (1st/2nd Ed - d20 style) did it similarly back in the late '70s & early '80s.

I hear that D&D 5.5 is being scrapped for a D&D 6.0 because of issues with fan base rejection. I wonder how that might impact a Traveller for D&D rules edition? Honestly, the new D&D rules are so radically different from the OSR feel of most Traveller mechanics (including Mongoose and T5) that I cannot imagine how to incorporate the Classes and Powers and Feats and Specialized Classes and Race bonuses into a Traveller CharGen mechanic. How do you create a Traveller Game for min-max super build Characters? (the issue with the current D&D game mechanics).

When I've needed to distinguish between Traveller5 and the forthcoming Traveller based on the D&D 5e rules, Traveller5 has been abbreviated "T5"; the forthcoming product is "MgT5e", indicating that the latter is a Mongoose product, as contrasted with the FarFuture/Marc Miller product.

Except that it’s not actually a Mongoose product, they just licensed the setting, much like what was done with Gurps. Which we call GT.
I tend to call them T5 and 5eTraveller.

It isn't a Mongoose product. They are licencing it to a completely different company, similar to how GT and T20 had nothing to do with the at the time Traveller IP holder. Mongoose will likely get a small fee based on sales, and at the moment it looks like a better seller than any Mongoose kickstarter to date.

Traveller 5e becomes T5e or T5e or for quickness T5e

D&D 5.5 is the first edition if D&D I have not purchases (except for the borderlands starter set). It was an easy decision not to buy this iteration
