Supplement Four
SOC-14 5K
In another thread, I said this:
I'll go on record, now, before the poll gets too far populated, that what I said earlier will be reflected in the poll. You'll see that CT gets about 40% of the vote and that MGT's votes will be cannibalized from the other editions of Traveller.
If I'm wrong, I won't hesitated to apologize for my prediction.
Now, I am a man of my word. If the four or six polls that have been put up don't support my prediction above, I'll start a whole thread in the MGT forum to apologize to every MGT fan that thinks they deserve an apology.
(BTW, I only voted in the CotI poll. I haven't voted multiple times in different polls.)
And, I will do this, even knowing that the polls are flawed. You see, they include the "Hybrid" option. Including that option in the poll does two things. First, it actually hurts the CT numbers because CT is a game designed to be house ruled, and many CT GMs use CT as a base with sections of other games slapped on top of it. If you asked these GMs which Traveller edition serves as the core or their game, many will tell you that it's CT they use as a base, building upon it with stuff from other games.
Second, the "Hybrid" option is more likely to reduce numbers from other Traveller editions because MGT hasn't been out long enough yet for many people to start "house-ruling" it.
In spite of this muddying of the poll results, CT is still one of the top two contenders in each and every poll.
What did my statement say above?
I said that, generally, CT players are sticking with CT, and the MGT converts are coming from other editions of Traveller (or are new players, obviously).
Now, only a moron would think that any of these polls actually proves anything.
But...what these polls are doing is supporting my statement above: CT players are sticking with CT. MGT is gaining players from other editions of Traveller rather than CT.
Are there exceptions? Sure! There's always going to be the guy that says, "Hey, I used to play CT, and now I love MGT!"
As you see, though, the numbers for CT remain high. When it's all said and done, I'm guessing that CT players will be about 40% of the Traveller playing population (but that's going to be hard to tell with the "hybrid" option in the poll).
