Traveller Wars!!

In another thread, I said this:

I'll go on record, now, before the poll gets too far populated, that what I said earlier will be reflected in the poll. You'll see that CT gets about 40% of the vote and that MGT's votes will be cannibalized from the other editions of Traveller.

If I'm wrong, I won't hesitated to apologize for my prediction.

Now, I am a man of my word. If the four or six polls that have been put up don't support my prediction above, I'll start a whole thread in the MGT forum to apologize to every MGT fan that thinks they deserve an apology.

(BTW, I only voted in the CotI poll. I haven't voted multiple times in different polls.)

And, I will do this, even knowing that the polls are flawed. You see, they include the "Hybrid" option. Including that option in the poll does two things. First, it actually hurts the CT numbers because CT is a game designed to be house ruled, and many CT GMs use CT as a base with sections of other games slapped on top of it. If you asked these GMs which Traveller edition serves as the core or their game, many will tell you that it's CT they use as a base, building upon it with stuff from other games.

Second, the "Hybrid" option is more likely to reduce numbers from other Traveller editions because MGT hasn't been out long enough yet for many people to start "house-ruling" it.

In spite of this muddying of the poll results, CT is still one of the top two contenders in each and every poll.

What did my statement say above?

I said that, generally, CT players are sticking with CT, and the MGT converts are coming from other editions of Traveller (or are new players, obviously).

Now, only a moron would think that any of these polls actually proves anything.

But...what these polls are doing is supporting my statement above: CT players are sticking with CT. MGT is gaining players from other editions of Traveller rather than CT.

Are there exceptions? Sure! There's always going to be the guy that says, "Hey, I used to play CT, and now I love MGT!"

As you see, though, the numbers for CT remain high. When it's all said and done, I'm guessing that CT players will be about 40% of the Traveller playing population (but that's going to be hard to tell with the "hybrid" option in the poll).

As much as I disagree with many of your opinions, I have to agree with the premise of your prediction.

I don't think, and never thought, that MGT would pull a majority of people away from CT. Actually, I'm not convinced it will pull many people away from any prior edition.

I do think it will bring more new players to Traveller, as well as bringing old players - those that played previous editions but have since abandoned it - back to the game.

Personally, I think the polls are just going to serve as ammunition in pointless arguments that aren't going to convince anyone of anything.

By the way, when you wrote:

What do you mean: "When it's all said and done" ?

Mongoose has a ten-year plan for Traveller. I have no idea if they will be able to accomplish it, or if they will screw it up along the way... but at what point do you judge "it" to be "done"? When the polls close? After a year? 2 years?

The only SENSIBLE course of action is to come back in 30 years and see how MGT compares to CT. See you in 2038 to settle this once and for all!

Flash forward three decades...

A hunch-backed, white haired Supplement Four wobbles to the time capsule and removes the lid.

It has been a journey, getting here. S4 has faced many challenges.

His old wrinkled hands dip down into the dark capsule to...grasp...a book!

Slowly...slowly, it comes out. Careful! Don't damage it.

A blow from the old man's lips sends dust flying in all directions.

And, it is then that S4 sees the answer to the 30 year old question.

Is it MGT? Or, is it S4's loved CT?

As the dust clears, S4 sees that it is neither.

To the surprise of all it...

what other people play has no influence on what I play

hopefully this won't all devolve into fanboi-ism and grognard-ic conflicts

"Traveller Wars !!" :nonono:

I very much hope that there will not be enough "combattants" to make this
a war. The current verbal brawls are already bad enough for the Traveller
community, I think.

And as for the polls ... interesting, but signifying nothing at all, neither one
way nor the other.

So, yes, as for this topic: See you in 2038 (or at least you might be able to
see what is left of me then) ... :smirk:

impossible - that's well before the expected release date still! It is still making the rounds of the inner circle!

"Convince me" is a phrase I've hardly ever heard on any forum, yet we all seem to think that's the receptive attitude of everyone else on the internet except us.

Clearly this proves:

grumpy old CT players already have thier house rules perfected and have nothing better to do than respond to polls.

MGT Fans are still waiting on High Guard and Mercenary before they can start playing so they have nothing better to do that respond to polls.

MT players are too busy collecting and inserting all the errata to waste time on polls.

TNE players are too busy trying to comprehend FF&S to waste time on polls.

Hero system players must be too busy playing to spend time online.

The rest are inconclusive. :)

The HERO and GUPRS players aren't playing either, they are still stuck in character generation :)
