Traveller 5 up on Kickstarter

So, wait a minute, I've been gaerring my writings for this upcoming system, and now I hear it's falling on hard times?

What exactly happened?

Do we know how much the book will retail for?

Reason is, while I'd love to support it, the ~£100 I'd have to pledge to get a book shipped to Blighty is a big pile of money for me and I can't quite silence the voice that says 'wait for it to hit the shops'.

You're in the T5 usergroup here, and if you participated in the kickstarter for T5 that's two links in. I'm pretty sure that's got you granting permission for contact in the TOS. I don't think I'd call it random :)

If it worries or annoys you I think there's a link in the email to remove you from the mailing list.

Did anyone else get randomly added to a T5 mailing list today without being asked for permission?

Today's email was from Mark's FFE email list. I got one from being in the T5 test group, one from being in CoTI, and one from having ordered something previously from FFE.

Who can blame him for covering all the bases?

I really wonder if this project is not going to end up being a victim of its own success. It's at 114K with 19 days left to go. So figure 250K to 300K by the end of it and 1500-2000 books.

Here's what Mark has committed to:

44 Character Examples in the Core book that are personalized for the SEH and Personalized Backers. I don't think any previous edition had even half this many (though admittedly, I never picked up T4). And that could grow if additional SEH levels are added. 1 every 5 days would mean: 76 examples.

34 Character Illustrations in an upcoming Galaxiad Adventure... Again, more SEH levels at the above rates: 66 Illustrations.

Inscribing 1500-2000 books! That's not just "Welcome to Traveller," but contacting 1500-2000 people, compiling their answers to find out how they want their book inscribed, and writing out "Welcome to Traveller, Tom!"

This is in addition to final editing of the T5 rules themselves, contracting vendors to print/produce the various SWAG and option offerings (T-Shirts, CDs, Jump Drive, etc.).

I sincerely hope he has some help to get this all done.

Let's see if I can give a little clarity...

Marc's also trying to see who wasn't contacted, particularly if you are already in the T5 group, and your mail is bouncing. The already bought in group isn't being forgotten, despite some claims I've read on some internet forums.

I cut out the recitation of some of the commitments...

Yes, Marc has help, and he's bringing in more help. Marc and I have a face-to-face this week to review things and start hammering on the errata.

By all means, please proceed with the hammering. I see all the activity on Kickstarter and all I can think of is GO TRAVELLER GO!!!

Just on the hammering. Prompted by the kickstarter news, I've started working again on proof-reading and solitaire play-testing (if it wasn't obvious), and others are doing so as well.

Is there a deadline for attaching stuff to sticky threads with errata? Will there be another round of drafts for a review? In particular, are we going to have a squiz at how damage is applied in combat?

I think you might need to clarify your question: $107,334 is the current pledge, with 778 backers.

I thought T5 was getting developed like all other wargames/RPGs, and that the books would appear on shelves at some hobby shop or bookstore. I thought there was a group of people working on it right now.

Then I see it up on kickstarter, and I'm astounded that it's up there.

It is, and they are.

In the gaming industry, the primary purpose of KS is gather cash to finance a physical print run. So via the funding of KS, physical T5 books will be hitting stores sometime early next year. Not just for the KS backers.

Professionals, such as in business and marketing, etc.?

Recall Mr. Miller ran a game company for the better part of twenty years.
I believe that nowadays, Kickstarter, Facebook, Twitter, etc ARE a big part of marketing niche products like this, whose presence has primarily had continued success through the Internet, rather than Brick and Mortar distribution.

But that's just my 2 CrImp.

I am in my 3rd year of business school after being in business for almost 20 years and I have learned alot. Nothing will replace professionals who know what they are doing. It's not 1977, the game industry is a mature industry; and use of different sales and marketing tools, such as social media, are regularly discussed in classes.

All respects towards Marc, if he is going to run the creative side, he should find someone to run the business side.

I suspect that Steve Jackson would be shocked to find out he's an amateur at running a business.

(I believe he's planning, or perhaps has already done, the same for Car Wars.)

Howard Taylor of Schlock Mercenary never impressed me as being unprofessional, either.

A number of independent films have been funded through Kickstarter recently, too. "Crowdfunding" is all the rage these days. There's a bill in front of Congress right now to change the laws regarding the sales of stock to make it easier to "crownfund" startups.

There are, perhaps, critical things one could say about some of Marc's choices in how he has developed T5. The use of Kickstarter isn't one of them. There's nothing unprofessional about it.

Using Kickstarter to raise the funds and using a specific skill set that you gained through a business degree to maximize the use of those funds are two completely different arguments, so you're both right.

I know I read about a video game that had stretch goals of posters, and didn't take into account how expensive it is to get all those cardboard tubes to ship them in. They spent 3/4 of the money they raised on fees and stretch extras.

So having a guy with a BBA couldn't hurt
