The Rebellion Redux

So... I would have two big questions.

How far out from the Imperium are they? Are they likely to be found by scouts from whatever society now occupies the old Imperium?

And who or what else is out there. A society that is being built on the far fringes of Charted Space may be pretty close to the frontiers of somthing else. Is there an edge of this new society where 'here be monsters' is written on the edge of star charts?

If so, is there something alien lurking out there, or a lost branch of Humaniti that has changed into something far different than anyone has ever seen near Imperial space.

What I envisioned was something like the Visigothi migrating first into greece, then through italy to finally settle in modern day Spain.
During which the West-Roman Empire was still owners of those countries, but had no army to stop them.

Or to use the Mao analogy again (although i don't know the real reason why he descided to do this "long march"). The ultimate goal of the faction is still to own "China", the just have to move out of the way from the bigger boys or something for the time being.

I'm thinking not. They would need to be pretty far so that the Imperium and its stars are just a distant memory. Of course, this would make the operation of getting there a rather long time, which is fine. You can't go home again and all that...

And who or what else is out there. A society that is being built on the far fringes of Charted Space may be pretty close to the frontiers of somthing else. Is there an edge of this new society where 'here be monsters' is written on the edge of star charts?
Initially it will be just the folks who relocated, which will likely include at least some Vargr and Aslan. One or more states will probably arise with the intitial group, split along racial or ethnic lines. But the initial thinking is that this will be a group of mainly humans in a fledgling interstellar state, dealing with all the problems humans create when competing for power.

So there will be the local adventure and intrigue as well as exporatory adventures, which can be state sponsored or hired. Kind of like the thrust of TNE, except there is no "old" UWP data.

If so, is there something alien lurking out there, or a lost branch of Humaniti that has changed into something far different than anyone has ever seen near Imperial space.
Very likely. There will certainly be alien native races that are encountered, but years down the road, game time wise, the scouts from this polity can run into a new alien empire of some kind. Too far out to determine details yet. Hell, I'm just thinking a lot of this up as I go. :D

Kind of like the Battletech backstory. Can't remember the specifics anymore, as I have long lost the BT stuff, but the main polity began squabbling and fracturing when the main military leader basically packed up with a bunch of folks and disappeared into the hills.

Then decades later, they come back as the clans and beat the hell out of almost anyone they come in contact with...

Why not the last remnants of the Lucanites?
Dunno about them - I don't like Lucan or that area of the Imperium, generally speaking. Maybe Strephon, Margaret, Craig or Brzk.

How many people?

millions, if you want the decently ompfhy upstart of the PE within a generation (without Paranoia style cloning of course)
definitely in the millions. I just need to work the numbers from a low berth perspective to see what kind of population we are talking about here.

How many ships? And how large?

several, but very few warships (they need a reason to leave afterall)
Relatively. But there will need to be a few in place for protection - most new ships (of all kinds) will be created by the new facilities. So the nice thing will be the initial combat ships will be relatively small, since they will need to get Escorts and Colonial Cruisers up ASAP for defense.

Cold Sleep or generation?

Dunno about this yet. I'm gonna send 'em out so that it will not be feasible to return to the Imperium.

Yeah, I don't think I want to deal with the extra variable of Virus. OTOH, AI is a cool thing to have in a campaign when used well.

No, brainstorming. Everyone here has great ideas.

Assuming they are using some form of Jump Drive to get where they are going, another hook/development is the mystery of what happened to the missing ships that were lost during the exodus. While some these crafts may have been lost to mechanical failures or some such, many others may have simply misjumped and continued on their own journey. And who knows, perhaps a small contingent chose, for their own reasons, to split off from the main convoy and set up their own little colony. Hunting for these lost colonies could be a source for some adventures, especially if it looks like the party may not like what they find...

(As far as travel, I was thinking huge ships with filled to the brim with low berths and embyronic birthing facilities that have a small generational crew making the jumps to their ultimate destination)

I was thinking that these lost colonists could have become anything between the citizens of an enlightened (and highly alien, Atlantis) to a Firefly 'Reaver-like' group to the shaped pawns of whatever alien society lies on the fringes of this territory...

WRT the "lost ships" absolutely. There will be star/world data for the corridor that the settlement ships took to get to wherever the final destination ends up being, but the lost folks could be anywhere and have set up their own pocket empire in the meantime, or regressed socially.

Regarding the travel, I keep ping-ponging back between jump and sublight. Jump will get the settlers somewhere in a shorter amount of time, but sublight enables the entire crew to go to sleep and avoid most enemies (Vargr would be a problem travelling to coreward, Aslan and Solomani to Spin/Rimward, K'Kree to trailing). So I still have to think about that one.

My first thought was for the exodus to be renegade Nobles and Admirals from Lucan's fraction too ;)

Recognising the hoplessness of their situation they made plans to refit a mothballed fleet and to get as many scientists, engineers etc. as they could.

How far do you want to stretch the "physics" of the backstory?
How about the exodus fleet making use of a one off jump portal - one of Lucan's special projects - to get them 36 parsecs away in the first jump.
They sabotaged the portal to prevent anyone following, but mysteriously some of the ships were lost.

The exodus fleet then proceeds by jump after jump until they have left the Imperium far behind.

Their route would take them coreward/trailing, taking them through the lesser rift. This would require sometimes travelling STL, adding five to six years to a journey that could have taken only a few months, if only the fleet could have had jump 6 engines for every ship.

Their target worlds are a quadrant of worlds cut off by jump 4 rifts from surrounding systems.

The exodus fleet took with them the very best in robotic construction machinery, the full Imperial technical database, and enough supplies and equipment to rapidly build a colony on a human compatible world.
