The Clothes Make the Man

Usually I ask for what they're wearing when they try to sneak into some place or bluff their way past someone or whatever. A well-dressed fella has a better chance of getting past the bouncer at a fancy party while a shabby-looking guy has an easier time talking to a fence than a guy wearing overalls with "Imperial Navy, we kick your ass" printed over them.

I've asked for clothing descriptions ever since they tried to sneak onboard an cargo ship dressed up as a catholic priest, rabbi and in tailcoats with the great plan "let's tell them we work onboard!"...

Mind if I ask how that one came out?? Inquiring humorists wanna know! :D

</font>[/QUOTE]I don't mind at all. Actually not very much happened, apart from them getting blank stares from the first mate who then asked kindly for some sort of identification. Whereupon the rabbi burst into a rant about the evils monotheism and how Shiva would do this and that and about at that point they got the biggest beating ever and was then promptly tossed back outside again.
Since then they try and remember which religion they dress up as at least.

LOL! Good story, SQUID! Thanx! Better laid plans we hope next time! ;)

Well, I tend to be rather conscious of what Shiara is wearing. If I'm scouting, lounging about aboard ship, dealing with port officials, handling potential charters, or simply having a night on the town, clothing affects the way the character acts for me. As a result, I tend to make short comments on what I am wearing dependant on what I am doing or about to do.

Our group plays IC almost totally, so things like appearance are often RPd. Such as one of the guys getting tricked out for a date. He gives us a descrip of prepping before heading out for the night. We all know what he's wearing and how to react to it if necessary. Also gives the Ref that much more to add into RPing the encounters. ;) It's always worth a commentary when Shiara wears short skirts. It's a rare event.

Just for kicks:

If you can, you should get some MegaTraveller books: they have a great, flowing/elegant clothing style that I call "Imperial upper-class/New Vilani"

In Digest Group Publishing's book "Vilani & Vargr", the Vilani are said to wear elegant, *asymmetrical* clothing: it is said that this style of clothing is a counter-reaction to the strong conformity among the Vilani. Also, clothing reflects your Vilani caste.

As others noted, GURPS Traveller has their nobles wear 18th century jackets and shirts: many people in that universe even wear jacket and ties! Traveller20 nobles seem to wear nice, 1980's style of dress.

"Clothes maketh the Man" as they say. In the campaign I am playing the characters just went out of there way to purchase Dress Uniforms. We are all trader types.

Our Dress uniform is sort of a friendlier version of the Black Dress Uniforms of the Star Wars vintage, with Simple silver rank and function buttons along the idea of ST:TNG. Fatigues and Tabards (For Combat and Vacc Suits) followed the same general theme.

If I recall correctly, I got involved in a flame spat over on the TML a while back. One thing led to another, and eventually some of us came upon the conclusion that a certain WELL KNOWN noble of the Spinward Marches liked to wear the following:

One full body yellow leotard
One pink feather boa
One pair cheap sunglasses [or Foster Grants, depending on nobles preferance].
One pair Pink 2 3/4inch stilleto high heel shoes
One Iridium cod piece, with retractable Unicorn Horn

Of course, this could just be pro-Santanocheev propaganda. Who knows?

"But did this NOBLE truly flame, and wear a dress?"
Inquiring into the Pro-Santanocheev heresy,

Agent MF Rourke, somewhere in the Marches...

Sounds like a '70s rock star.

Maybe that's his Masterwork concert outfit. Gives him a +2 wardrobe bonus to all Entertain cascade skills.

Hey now! If the governor of Minnesota can get away with wearing something similar to this, then it is perfectly fine for the certain un-named Archdu...er....noble. :D

I'm sure the honorable Gov. Ventura never 'wrassled' in heels...pumps are more sensible.

No comments on the codpiece...

Gods of Glisten!! Quality clothing and good personal grooming habits should be the first thing on a noble's mind! Who wants to see a throne room full of grizzled, unkempt rabble? Certainly not me! Competition is extremely fierce among the ruling class, on all levels. Would you sign a multimegacredit trade agreement with a man (or woman) unfamiliar with the ways of the ascot or the toothbrush? I know I wouldn't... A man should manage himself, before he can be trusted with the management of an Imperium... After all sign of an individual with social conciousness...

Now where's that valet of mine?

Folks in my campaign enjoyed playing in character so, yes, they paid attention to what they wore for the most part. (Especially the former Scout with the SOC B). However, we weren't always that creative; lots of flight suits and fatigue like garments.

The URI as given is incorrect; drop the "www.". The same article is also at http://www.freelancetraveller.com/features/consgoods/smartfab.html, somewhat cleaner formatting.

So then , according to the presented article, I could have Power Generating undies? I'm in! Of course this means that there would be much more "mooning" in any given scenario

As one Imperial Emperor to another, I must agree! Another worry I'd be concerned with is what would happen if said undies were used to give someone a "wedgie".

And my good Emperor Strephon, if I may ask, have you ever partaken of the joys of shoving a random noble out of a balcony window in the Imperial Palace, just because you can? :D

All this discussion on clothes of the far future has me wondering; how does one do laundry in the far future? Surely someone has thought about it.

?TL16 Meson Washer/Dryer combo?

Toss the dirty clothes in the 'Fresher cubicle, and they come out clean, folded, and wrapped in plastic.

Just *don't* get the settings wrong when you use it yourself, though! I remember one instance where our ship's Aslan used the 'Fresher. The prankster from engineering changed the dial, so when he selected "Tidy Up", it was really set on, "Clean and Fold." Boy, that was one angry Aslan! It was kinda funny, though, seeing an Aslan folded into a cube and wrapped in plastic.

We had to put him in Cold Sleep for the rest of the voyage. Then dump him on the landing field and leave before he could break out. It was a pity losing that fellow, but the engineer, annoying as he could be at times, was more useful to us overall.

Lords, yes, my illustrious predecessor Cleon! I wouldn't tell the moot this, but im also very fond of pushing the statue of Paulo off the upper veranda and onto visitors on the way up the walk, It's smashing fun, haha! So glad that some traditions endure!

There is a copy of the Digest with Vilani geezers wearing sci-fi Japanese type clothes - so thats what the bureaucrats all wear.

I reckon Solomani merchants all wear pin stripe brooks brothers suits and bolar hats and carry furled umbrellas as a mark of their heritage. Sol Sec assasins prefer Armani!
