Well, according to the sourcebook, (and without going to traveller map to count things up), it says about 1000 ships per sector, 320 named fleets (~ 1 fleet per subsector). (320 named fleets, 320 sub sectors, 20 sectors)
So, given those numbers, you have 1000 ships / sector, 16 subsectors per sector, so 63 ships per subsector. Going for a hand wavy 50% star system density in a subsector, that's 40 star systems, or about 1.5 ships per star system.
Obviously the star systems vary widely in their economic output, but, 1.5 ships per start system doesn't seem that high of a burden (mind, we're talking front line combat ships, not the auxiliaries).
All told the Imperium is fielding about 20,000 ships. 20,000 divided by "space is big, really big" doesn't seem that much.
When they all show up and blot out the sun, sure. "Wow!" But scattered hither and yon across the Imperium, still, not so much. Even doubled with the reserves, not so much.
I'm sure someone, somewhere, sometime, has run either TCS, Pocket Empires, or T5 math to calculate the IGP (Imperial Galactic Product) of the Imperium. It's probably quite a bit.
