Built on a 500-ton unstreamlined hull, the Maru-class Merchant is a reasonably-priced frontier trader. It is equipped with the Gayle Field type 52 jump drive, the Banshee Gravitics B1.8 maneuver drive, and the Karuniin E2+e power plant, giving performance of Jump-2 and 1G acceleration. Fuel tankage supports one jump and one month of operations. On the bridge is a Model/2 computer. There are five hardpoints, with three single turret beam lasers and two empty single turrets standard. One vehicle is carried: a 20-ton launch in its own hangar. Cargo capacity is 199 tons.
The Maru is a flexible design. Shipbuilders in especially troubled areas typically build hulls with a second layer of armor, and a little less cargo space. Owners will also change out the armament load.
The ship requires a crew of 3: Pilot/Astrogator, engineer, and a medic. A steward and gunners may be added. It can carry up to 14 passengers. There are 14 low berths.
