Robot Construction - JTAS

Mithras

SOC-14 1K
I notice that the robot construction rules from the early JTAS were flawed and amended in a later issue; perchance, is there an amended copy anywhere on line, or has anyone written the amended article up anywhere??

Call me lazy - but I want to start building robots from a decent write-up of the rules....

Hope some-one can help here!

It's on the CD, Paul. If it is online, it needs to come down, as it's Copyright infringement.

I have the CD-ROM for the rules, but not JTAS. I have the JTAS articles in print ... I thought someone might have rewritten and compiled the 3 articles plus errata to create something a bit more readable!

As an author myself (GURPS Atomic Horror plus various history books), I'm all for copyright!

LBB8's rules are heavily Striker-influenced. The Best of JTAS #2 robot rules (which include the amendments) are simpler.

I understand that the JTAS #2 rules were used as a base that was expanded into Book 8.

One can see the influences, but it's more a rework than a revision.

I still prefer the much simpler (and clearer) rules in Dragon... even if they are not fully compatible.

Yes. Dragon 64, pp47-52. Same issue as "Planet Busters"...

IIRC, there's a very simple set in a JG product...I'm thinking it was Pegasus Magazine. It's prolly the simplest set of robot construction rules you'll ever see, and prolly not what is wanted (if memory serves, the rules were basically eyeballing a robot type and guessing at stats with no real tables or hard core data to build upon like the other robot rule sets).

The Dragon rules are "fully functional"; a design system, and a means of ratings that correspond to PC stats, as well. It's purely CT, not Striker... tho striker conversion can be added easily (AV's are all that's needed).

I used it even into MT.

I'll confess to use the Dragon Magazine rules myself, although I did not own the BoJTAS #1 (I was working from memory before, from work) at the time.

I've always liked the graphic of the various types of beings that led off the JTAS robot design article.

I have the article--just never read it.

And just an FYI, from Special Supplement 2: Robot Adventures (a PDF you can purchase online)...

Code:
About This Supplement

This supplement, Robot Adventures, is a collection of adventure material for
use in a Traveller campaign. This material approved for use with both T20 and
Classic Traveller. Although the game mechanics used primarily throughout
Robot Adventures derive from T20 – Traveller for the D20 System, this has
been minimized where possible, for ease of use with multiple versions of the
Traveller system. The background material is fully compatible with other
versions of Traveller, as well. Creative Traveller Referees should encounter
few difficulties in using this volume to enhance the quality of their
Traveller experience, whatever their preferred gaming system might be.

This volume of adventures specifically deals with robots in the Traveller
universe, and contains 22 scenarios with a robot bent. In addition, Robot
Adventures contains a few robot designs that are specific to scenarios found
in this book, using the T20 vehicle design sequence. With this volume, the
Traveller Referee will have additional robot encounters and adventures to
integrate into his or her campaign.

This supplement is designed to compliment Special Supplement 1: Robots of
Charted Space. Robot Adventures does not require the use of Robots of Charted
Space. However, Referees will find the supplement useful in providing
additional game statistics of robots to use in the scenarios presented in
this book.

Don't know, I took a month off from my computer (boy that was refreshing :) ) and am just getting back into using it again.

I bought mine last year (circa 2008).

Enjoying the FASA cd currently. :)

I used to use the Dragon 64 "URP" based system for years until I lost the issue. Recently reaquired this awesome gem (and its kind of striking Elmore art) off Ebay for a trifle.

That there, was a great article.
