Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.
What would be the resale value of a used ship (in % of original price)? For example, a new Free Trader goes for 37.08 MCr new, stock. How do you calculate the resale on it if it's 40 years old?
The old canon (CT) said -10% upon delivery and -10% per decade thereafter. So 40 year old ship would be -50%.
T20 broke it down to -10% upon delivery and -5% or -10% per decade depending on the maintenance records. Which I (or it?) further broke down on a year by year depreciation.
But that is all presuming just normal wear and usage. I expect combat damage to cause precipitious depreciation even if the damage is completely repaired.

It depends on where you sell it. An old TL12 Free Trader may fetch a handsome price on a TL8 world. What they could pay you with is certainly another question.
I bet a lot of high fever bidding would happen if some down on their luck Free Trader crew decided to retire on Earth today and put the ship up for auction on eBay
In seriousness though the value of the ship, even if on it's last legs, would be incalcuable in such a scenario. The advances that would be made by reverse engineering the systems alone would be worth several nation's total worth.
But, that only works in a situation where such knowledge is new. That's not typically the case in Traveller. The buyer on a TL8 world looking for a TL12 ship would probably be able to go to a TL12 world and buy it. Or just order it via xNet. And it's more likely that such a buyer would be shopping for a ship they can service at home and wouldn't want that new fangled TL12 stuff.
"Thruster Plates? Naw, can't get them serviced at home. I'm looking for a model with a simple HEPlaR engine."
I've never considered 40 years "last legs", particularly, though a ship may require significant refit at that point even if it has never come under "unexpected" stresses.
With regular maintenance planes go 40+ years. The youngest B52H was delivered in 1962 and they are still dropping stuff, german F4F Phantoms where delivered in 1972-75 and are just now being phased out due to political not technical reasons. And there are quite a few DC3/C47 and JU52 (8) still flying as well as some WWII bombers and fighters
So 60-100 years for a cargo spaceship should be a resonabel lifetime, more for those who don't land/skim fuel since that means even less stress for the hull.
As for resale value, a nice twist would be adding "brands" to the ships together with real or perceived advantages of a certain ship. Similar to the "cult" made on Volkswagen(1) or the "low value" placed on Fiat(2). This could lead to outragous "bidding wars" and overvalued junkers or the players inquiring why a ship is sold for cheap.
What is valued and what not might even wary with region. A Solomanie "Adam Smith" 400dton might go as "superior build" on some worlds in the Imperial regions bordering on the SolConf etc.
