Plans for the Future?

I'd point you to Avenger's website and the forums there: http://www.traveller.comstar-games.com/

New T20 adventures, supplements for 1248 etc are being actively produced over there, so if you want to spend your money on some decent Traveller products (and actually get the product too) then I'd encourage you to head over there and spend it
. And talk to people on the forums there too.

Here however, nobody has a clue what's going on.

That's not entirely accurate. We can state with a fair degree of certainty what is not happening (people don't seem to be having much luck getting responses to queries or issues, not much is being said about current product schedules even to authors who have (in theory) work in the pipelines, etc).

That's definitely not 'nobody has a clue'.

Mind you, I do have to agree that it would be wise to look who is actually rolling out product actively and use that as a guideline to where you decide to allocate your money (especially if you are risk averse).

I had already been purchasing a lot of Comstar Material via drivethrupg.com.

From what I read at http://www.traveller.comstar-games.com/, it seems that there won't be much more produced for Traveller in the future by Comstar (as they go on to produce Translight), and nothing for T20.

Looks to me like "official" support T20 is winding down. Shame really, the materials being produced were of excellent quality and I will be sorry to lose it as a source. But what the hey.. I still have them, and will likely be using them for a long time to come

Avenger continues to produce Traveller materials. This month we have Part 2 of Operation Dominoes (1200), Scout Ships (1248) and Homecoming (993 or Golden Age) plus maybe a book of short adventures at the end of the month.

Translight is happening, but Traveller is alive and well at Avenger/Comstar.

It is, however, true that we are not producing T20 materials. We can't do that without a license. We did begin discussing such a thing with QLI but while I was in the midst of looking at the numbers to see if it was paying for one, and if so, how much, contact with QLI trailed off.

Not knowing how long that would be for, we took down all our T20 content as a courtesy. As things stand (I've not heard from Hunter for 4 months and more, and I'm too busy to chase him, especially given the fact that he was out of the loop for an entire YEAR last time) I don't expect the situation to change.

So, as to T20, that's very much in the hands of QLI and QLI is rather quiet at present. I do know that the T20 players book is ready to go subject to QLI and I coming to a deal on publication. As far as I know there wasn't anything else in the works - submissions came through me for a long, long time and I don't know of anything.

But.

People keep talking about how good QLI products were. I wish some of that brand itentification rubbed off on the author, because that's me.

And I'm still publishing Traveller stuff in the meantime.

Just to make sure I squash that potential rumour...

AVENGER FULLY INTENDS TO CONTINUE PUBLISHING TRAVELLER MATERIALS IN ALL FORSEEABLE FUTURES.

3 NEW BOOKS THIS MONTH, MAYBE 4. YAY US!
(wry grin)

MJD, the question that I plague you over at the ComStar boards and needs still be answered. When might we expect to see more deadtree products from Avenger? As you have establish quite a few deadtree products for my FGLS to pick them up...right now I am left to the vagrancies of Amazon. I understand the need to go slow and regroup but I think only by actually having product on the shelves will Avenger truly fly.

Think if all those years ago, if you saw the TNE rules in PDF only. Chances are you would have been overwhelmed. And only the MT was available for you. Optics must include visuals for consumers to latch upon.

Why do I get the feeling that support for T20 should be carried on by the fans? I want to see more fan-submitted material, similar to Flynn's Stellar Reaches ezine. Given Hunter's continual absence, it seems we must take matters into our own hands.

(begins plotting revolution...)

(continues to use italics, to give ominous impression)

I'm not sure that's true anymore. The RPG market is changing - the shelves are largely for the biggest players in the market now. From what I understand, the smaller players (like Avenger) are economically a lot better off by releasing PDFs with POD as an option. Printing generally adds a lot to the cost - if you can make a professional-looking product available on the web without the need to spend a fortune on printing and distribution then why not do that? Plus, a lot more of the money spent on online purchases direct from the company goes to the company itself - if they do print versions that go through distributors to the retailers then they make much less money. And in this industry you need all the money you can get.

With a decent colour duplexing laser printer, you can do your own printing. Plus, when the publisher releases errata and updates, you can slot these in to the ring binder in the relevant places.

I print on A4, double sided for most large RPG books I buy on PDF. I then slot this in to an A4 four-ring binder which has an open slip front. I slip the cover and back pages in to the folder cover slips and have the content securely held inside with the four rings.

For smaller books (around 40 pages), I print in booklet form fold and staple down the centre. This creates an nice A5 booklet.

The printer cost me £350 a couple of years ago. Printing costs are about 1p per page B&W or 4p per page colour. Most books I print colour covers, then B&W/Greyscale insides.

As Mal points out, deadtree costs a lot. Besides, Comstar deals with actual publication, Avenger just creates.

I imagine the next print product will be the next 1248 sourcebook.

Hi Martin, undeniably good materials comming from your desk. Thank you fo moving the New Era timeline forward, and also for Grand Fleet. (and all of the other items I have that have you name on them that I do not wish to itemise right now)

I recently purchased 1248 Ships: Small Merchants, and was happy with what I recieved (I love deckplans), and likely as not will be getting Scout ships as well.

Sorry if I misinterpreted what I was reading over in the Comstar forums.

A bit of the problem I face with T20 at the moment is the investment I made with my players (I promised them I won't be chagning systems again). I convinced many of them to purchase the book (and a couple of recalcitrants were given it as a gift at christmas time).

That means that I will be using T20 for a few more years to come. I would love for new materials to be produced for this system (as a ref, not having to do conversions is a real time saver), hence my hope for new T20 material in the future.

Well scout, even if official sources and this site both dry up I expect there'll be other sources and T20 fan sites. There is a yahoo T20 group (here) that doesn't see a lot of traffic because so many of us are here

I'll be blunt, I've thought about doing stuff like fanfic, artwork, a Flynn-style fanzine dedicated to T20... I have a lot of ambitions.

I just need to get motivated. The T20 game 'Off the Far End' and the new Type S deckplan I drew up is me sticking my big toe into the water to test it.

I'm puzzled that, of the three publication methods now available--print run, PDF, POD--POD remains the least explored among small presses. Why is that?

I own several POD books from Lulu (EABA, indie games), and they're professional-grade.

Marc should upload his entire catalogue to Lulu instead of mailing out each book personally. Likewise, companies like Avenger could sell their Traveller stuff both as pdf and through POD.

Here on the internet we sometimes forget that the people who prefer actual books over pdfs are the (vast) majority. We do buy pdfs, but grudgingly, given our toner costs, our disinterest in laser printers (we don't print out enough material for that investment to be viable), and our unwillingness to schlepp the stuff to Kinko's to have it bound properly.
