Navy Procedure - Jumping Outside the Imperium

Ah yes, I'd glanced atthat but dismissed the 'half a deckplan' but it would make a goodcruiser if the plans were completed - a fun project :)

Just checked it - its the Type AT, the 'Prosperity'.

You could do it with a stock Type MT (deck plans from the CT Alien Realms supplement) flagged as a Naval Auxiliary -- but she's a Jump-4 hull, which eliminates some of your navigation challenges.

Alternatively, you could go with a Jump-2 1000-dton Solomani Type SK (no deckplans available, but you could rescale & repurpose the MT ones above since much of it is off-map cargo & fuel) and simply decide she is a prize taken from the Sword Worlds in the 5FW and now operating as an Auxiliary in private hands under the ownership of a former IN line officer...

Remember, the RN has farmed off most of its support & supply vessels (and even LSTs, in the 1970s) to the "Royal Fleet Auxiliary"...

from Wiki-waki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Fleet_Auxiliary

"The Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) is a component of the Naval Service that keeps the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom running around the world. Its main function is to supply the Royal Navy with fuel and supplies. It also counts a repair ship, and amphibious assault vessels amongst its assets.

RFA personnel are civilians of the Ministry of Defence civil service who wear Merchant Navy-style uniforms and rank insignia and who are under naval discipline when the vessel is engaged on warlike operations. RFA vessels are manned predominantly by the civilians, augmented with regular Royal Navy personnel to perform specialised military functions, such as operating and maintaining helicopters, operating weapon systems (many RFA ships are armed with defensive weapons) or manning hospital facilities.

The RFA is funded out of the UK defence budget, the Commodore commanding the RFA is directly responsible to the Royal Navy Commander-in-Chief Fleet (CINCFLEET)."

Most RFA vessels are built to merchant standards, and some are modified merchant designs.

I guess a merchant navy like that would be where the rumours of an imperial merchant service come from (green imperial sunburst logo?).

Talking about me, or is somebody else doing that too?

Yep, I've long had a Merchant Marine* service in MTU. That is ex-Navy and retired officers in command of Subsidized Merchies. Always ready to be mobilized or tasked with special (and sometimes deniable) missions. One of the more common special missions is Q-ship duty.

And yep I borrowed heavily from historical and current practices.

* doesn't mean Marines (as in the service career), though some ex-Marines may well serve aboard, I suppose more properly I should have called it the Merchant Navy, can't really recall now why I picked Marine over Navy

Because "Merchant Marine" has been the official name in the USA for that service for over 70 years?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Merchant_Marine

"The United States Merchant Marine refers to the fleet of US civilian-owned merchant ships—operated by either the government or the private sector, that are engaged in commerce or transportation of goods and services in and out of the navigable waters of the United States. The Merchant Marine is responsible for transporting cargo and passengers during peace time. In time of war, the Merchant Marine is an auxiliary to the Navy, and can be called upon to deliver troops and supplies for the military.

The people of the Merchant Marine are called merchant mariners, and officers are commissioned into the United States Maritime Service. The Merchant Marine is a civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Navy, but not a uniformed service, except in times of war when, in accordance with the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, mariners are considered military personnel. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill into law making veterans of merchant mariners who serve in war.

As of 2006, the United States merchant fleet numbered 465 ships and approximately 69,000 people. Seven hundred ships owned by American interests but registered, or flagged, in other countries are not included in this number.

The federal government maintains fleets of merchant ships via organizations such as Military Sealift Command and the National Defense Reserve Fleet. In 2004, the Federal government employed approximately 5% of all American water transportation workers."

The Merchant Marine Academy is one of the five federal service academies along with USMA, USNA, USCGA, and USAFA.
