Mycoprotine

Rahnd

SOC-9
I remember reading in a Shadowrun source book, i think it was second ed Shadowtech, about mycoprotine. Synthetic meat. I would imagine by TL 13 or 14 that it would be rather easy to synthatize, even onboard a ship. that could cut down on storage for food. and at higher tech levels it should be able to be portable...thus could be a major asset to survival equipment, and lenthen the amount of time some one could live in emergency situations. I think the stuff can be injected with various flavours too, so its not jsut a bland material.

Mycoprotein is already available - its marketed in England for vegetarians (or as low fat protein) as Quorn. Its made from fungi proteins that were allegedly found growing in a field in berkshire or somewhere.

Actually its not all that bad.

I rather like Quorn products. They cook real fast in my Foreman Grill (I tend to forget to make food untuil I'm painfully hungry, if I'm busy) and the texture is OK.

They're pretty varied in terms of what you can make them taste like. I'm not a vegetetarian but I could live on mycoprotein if I wanted to.

Well....

It is all about the sauce you know... ;)

In Japan they were working on funghi growing on organic waste as a food source.. You are what you eat? :D

Stuff like this would probably common on High-Tech, High-Pop worlds. Fresh meat will be a delicacy for the rich. I remember an adventure somewhere of smugling frozen meat past vegan customs and greedy dockworkers.
