Marylanders... Roll Call

At one time there were what, four or five of those shops within travel distance (Columbia, Owings Mills, White Marsh, Arundel Mills), originally called Alternate Worlds? Then Wizards took them over, and they all went bully up. It's a shame. I think that's one of the things that put me off D&D3.5, they fact that they bought out those stores and then killed them.

Yep, they had all kinds of cool stuff. I hate that I have to head over to JoAnn's to get any mini stuff....

And if you have never been out to the Game Parlour, it really is worth the trip. It's a little over an hour, but they have more square footage than all of our local stores combined.

I have to go out that way tomorrow for business. If I go early, I may be able to check it out, otherwise my time will be booked.

That place in Glen Burnie is called "Games and Comics and Stuff". I must have passed that place during work a dozen times and never checked it out until last week. Not much there I thought. Kind of like Dream Wizards.

It seems that most of the game stores I've seen in this area function more as places to play, rather than shops with a large variety of game products. I'll have to check that place in VA sometime, but like Vargas, I'm not too keen on the driving (I already drive around 100 miles a day as it is!)

I'm still looking for that "Hobby Shop" of my youth. Some place that has everything from model rockets, to wargames, to quirky rpgs. Maybe it's the way the industry has changed over the years (you have shops for 'traditional hobbies': models trains, you have shops for rpgs and comics, you have shops for miniatures, etc.)?

Yeah, I remember growing up outside of Annapolis we had at least three in the corridor between Annapolis and Glen Burnie. All died slow deaths.

Even here in Columbia, we had the WotC store, but also had a hobby store in the mall, and that eventually died a couple years ago, although it did survive longer than the WotC store, albeit not by much.

last time I was up in MD, there was a comic book shop that carried games in Lakeforest Mall (Gaithersburg). My 8 year old is a big Spiderman/Venom fan and was drooling at the stuff they had. That was late last year.

Once upon a time, there was a Compleat Strategist in Kennet Square. I used to go up there for the Humbrel paints for my ACW troops. I think that's also where I got started on 1/285 microarmour. I can field Panzer Bakke in 1 to 1, some portions of Panzerlehr in 1 to1, all of the Panzerlehr in 1 to 5. Jagdpanzer was our ruleset of choice. Oh and the Italian fleet in 1 to 1, using Seekrieg (still need to get a copy of Seekrieg 5).

I miss Origins and Gencon East, Balticon, Darkovercon, Atlanticon, and a few others whoes names I can't recall now. I still go to Coldwars and Fall in!, and this year the Travellercon, now that I know it exists.

2. Forgot Historicon in July, also in Lancaster

Solemn oath, If I EVER hit the lottery, I will sponsor a big con in the mid atlanic again, its the freaking sahara of gaming cons now a days. Damn WOTC for killing Origins, damn them to hell.

Getting down off the indignant screamers soap box before the cops come.

Speaking of Games & Stuff, I'm right in Glen Burnie. I ran some MT games there a few years back during one of their Game-a-thon events.

Version-wise I'm a CT/MT guy, though I like MGT as well. GURPS is purely source material for me. But all my ftf gaming time goes to Castles & Crusades these days.

there are a good handfull in NJ

and I always run into someone else who says, "You still play that?!?!?! I loved that game!!" Just had oneaccidental encounter with a couple in Princeton NJ

But I am not Maryland...so I'll just shut up now :D

Mind you...

there is still TravellerCon/USA this October...

This'll be the third year coming up and last year we had Frank Chadwick...

See what we pull out of our hats this year!

Marc(who still needs to shut yp :D )

Still haven't run one yet, but I think I'm going to have a Travellerathon on my birthday next month.

I am still running my campaing in Central NJ. I know it is a bit distant from much of Maryland but I have three players regularly coming from Pa. So if you are up for the run, we are here. On the info side of the trip, we are 89 miles north of the NJ/Del border coming up 95(which turns into the NJ Turnpike) So that is ~1:45 hrs from the Maryland/Del border(I used to drive from Home to Germantown and back once a week to live in a hotel and work down there).

Thanks for the invite. That would be a bit of a haul. From my house in Columbia it takes about 45-50 minutes to get to Havre de Grace, which is what? Maybe a good 15 or 20 minutes south of the Mason-Dixon?
