Magic 8 Ball results for Referees

TEOTWAWKI... well, a large number of things have happened since I first picked up a d6, in 1955.

So it is the end as I knew it in 1955. Home computers, space travel, web forums, more than one soda pop per week.

Lots of changes.

My son bought me a set of dice for Christmas last year that included a 3-sided die, a 5-sided, and a 7-sided die, all of which are good for rolling. Also the golf-ball size 100-sided die.

I also have re-worked Axis and Allies to use a 12 sided die, as I was not satisfied with using a D6 for that game with all of the additional units. When I teach my game design class, we spend an entire period discussing probabilities and how to get a range of them, from flipping a coin (and hoping that it does not land on an edge, I have had that happen) to spinning a wheel, to drawing cards (from Candyland to a 54-card deck (I leave the Jokers in), to the full range of die readily available.

There was a boardgame we used to play where you hit when rolling 1-3 on a D6, with various situational modifiers. The game play improved vastly when we changed that to 1-4 on a D8.

Incidentally, a lot of card decks nowadays have four jokers. In my lifetime it has changed from 2 to 3 to 4 jokers, and I've been awaiting 5-joker decks for a long time now, but it seems that the progression has stopped. (I used to speculate how many jokers a standard deck would have in the Classic Era ;)).
