LBB 2 '81 Subsidzed Merchant (Type R)

spank

SOC-13
Because I don't remember if I posted this anywhere I'm going to stick it here.
I spent a decent bit of time trying to replicate the math behind the LBB 2 Ships, and I finally figured it out.
The impetus for this was to re-design some LBB2 designs that had "foibles"
One of those was the Type R Subsidized Merchant.
It had alot of potential, but also a few flaws.
Chief among those (IMHO) was the inclusion of a 20 ton Launch costing 14 MCr.
But it also had C/C/C drives which really ran the cost up, +22MCr.
So with the math in hand I re-fitted the Ship in a few different variants,
  • OG
  • No Launch
  • B/B/B with Launch
  • B/B/B no launch.
So, here are 4 LBB2 '81 compliant Subsidized Merchant variants.

I wasn't going to include them,
But since I have them,
Here is the "clean sheet merchant" which uses a custom hull to "reclaim" the space lost to drive in the standard hull, and the "Planetoid Merchant" which trade cargo space for an even cheaper hull.

The tricky bit is that the Type R is built in a hull that should be used for a Jump-2/2G version with an oversized power plant for double-fire. This provides a built-in upgrade path for the ship if PCs own it.

The oversize drive bay and the lifeboat are there to cut the revenue payload space down to bring it to parity with the Type A that has a proportionately larger bridge. It's also built to have a cargo bay that's sized for the cargo generation rules.

It's been a while since I ran the numbers, and I'm limited to posting from my phone by a lap- cat (li'l dude ain't moving -- and why should he?) but...

Assume there's a 400Td standard hull (with the same discount) sized for size B drives. Use size B drives, ditch the lifeboat, and I'm almost certain it'll cover its costs at KCr 1k per Td of payload per jump -- no subsidy needed.

Potentially quite profitable without the special hull:

Not profitable as J-2, of course.

Note that if the ship actually is profitable a subsidy isn't all that much better:
