Landgrab: Baakh/Ley

Jame

SOC-14 5K
I've been working on a landgrab of Baakh, 1336 Ley Sector, as described in Gateway to Destiny.

Now, before I post it, I want to make sure that I actually can, because this world appears in QLI's product. Hunter?

Allrighty. Baakh/Outreaumer/Ley Sector, 1334 A488758-D is a minor trading world; its influence as a world is confined to Outreaumer Subsector and environs, although it does host offices of several corporations. This planet will be presented in a sectioned fashion, with each post concentrating on one area (starport, size/atmo/hydro as one, population, government/law level, technology and then notes) as the writer feels like it.

Starport A: Baakh's Starport can build both starships and non-starships. Both refined and unrefined fuel are available; fuel refineries are available to process unrefined fuel, but this brings up the cost to equal refined. A few building slips are available, both in the highport and in the downport, with the highport slips being able to construct anything up to 100,000 tons, but since Baakh is a non-industrial* world, this is a fairly rare occurance, and most shipbuilding is escort-sized and smaller.
Baakh Prime Highport is the site of the shipyard and orbits geosynchronously with Baakh Prime Downport. Several plans for an orbital elevator have been mooted, but have all been shot down due to airspace traffic concerns and economic considerations. Baakh Prime Downport is fairly large as downports go, although as much of the space is taken up by fuel, storage and maintenance as is taken up by docking bays or the startown. Naturally, the system defense headquarters is located here, hosting the port defenses and coordinating the defensive depots which are scattered about the system.
Although there are no bases in the system, the Imperial Army does have an Armory and a few battalions to provide armaments, training and planetary defense, and the quality of the arms manufactured here are the envy of a number of other planets.
There are several smaller ports on Baakh and on a couple of other planets and moons, including on the moon Selu. The port on Selu is the only one equivalent to class-B; the other ports are equivalent to class-D or C depending on whether they have refined fuel available**.

*: Why would a TL-13 planet, even with 80 million people on it, be non-industrial? Wouldn't it be an excellent candidate for manufacturing goods?

**: Please keep in mind that I am using a house rule that allows class-C ports to provide both refined and unrefined fuel (IMTU they can also build small craft if the referee desires). Their stocks of refined would be lower, though.

Either I misread or Gateway to Destiny has a misprint.

I'll go look it up while I look for the notebook with the writeup I made.

Please stay tuned for the next part of the series.

GtD has Baakh listed as Ni.

Size 4: Baakh's diameter is 4442 kilometers across. Near-normal gravity is present due to a combination of spin and density.

Atmosphere 8: Baakh's atmosphere is dense due to a combination of spin, density, hydrographics and gravity, plus some heavy elements which are usually inert for sophonts.

Hydrographics 8: Water covers 84% of Baakh's surface, contributing to the atmospheric density.

Social Statistics

Population 7: 84,580,054* citizens live on-planet, not including the 40,000 or so people in the outsystem. Most of these planetary citizens live in sealable cities due to the density of the atmosphere. The off-planet citizens live on either the moon or on one of the moons of any of the 5 gas giants.
Most citizens are either somewhat technically minded or somewhat artistic. The technologically minded ones tend to go into the local industry or the government, while the artistic ones are famous for their arts, especially the opera, music and dancing. Several famous musicians are from Baakh.

Government 5: Feudal Technocracy, ruled by various technical houses, several of whom have mercantile ties. Several positions are open to commoners who prove their technical skills.

Law Level 8: Long blades and all firearms, except for properly licensed handguns which are kept in the home, are prohibited. However, daggers are permitted, and many members and priests of a local cult carry them due to their beliefs; others carry them in order to claim to be members.
Nobles' retinues are given a partial exemption to this, being allowed to carry either longarms (rifles, autorifles and gauss rifles, but not laser rifles) or swords, but not both. SMGs are not permitted to anyone outside the police or the military.
Nobles' bodyguards are liable to be called into planetary defence service in an emergency, but this has not occurred in centuries.

Tech Level D: Baakh's level 13 technology permits its shipbuilders to manufacture jump drives of up to jump-4, and despite its ostensibly non-industrial rating it does actually manufacture some goods for export, especially starships.

Trade: Even though there is no naval base here, Baakh manufactures a few warships for the Imperial Navy. Indeed, several starships and numerous small craft are produced each year, although most of the non-warships are commissioned for megacorporate use, especially Tukera and MAE Lines. Another chief export is computers.
Most of Baakh's direct trade is limited to Alpha quadrant of Ley sector, although ships from Baakh do range throughout the Imperium. The two large corporations present are Tukera and MAE Lines.

The army, which has a Central Armory** in the capitol city and several more around the world, is equipped with gauss weapons and combat armor.

*: I generated this using a d10.
**: The Central Armory concept is, IMTU, the place where the Imperial Army has its main base. Any other Armory is a smaller Imperial/Local Army base.
