IRIS character generation --Reprint info?

I wouldn't let people play IRIS characters - they are ultra munchkin power gamer stuff and are not even canon as they are a 'traveller variant'. Even when canonised they never really existed anyway....

Thanks for the warning...that's why I'm curious to see the background and the generation tables. I have an MT generator that does produce IRIS characters but they seem fairly "out of balance" for game standards--- produces lots of commando/scout/JOT/med doctor/starship pilots all rolled into one.

I'd let my players play IRIS. And have.

Just sayin'. I find this cry of "muchkin" as rather, well, killjoy. I find "you'll take your character with two ranks of admin and one in ships boat and like it" refing sort of counterproductive to a good game experience.

Afternoon secretagent,

Well, I've checked my Challenge magazines and both issues are among the holes in my collection. Sorry I can't help.

Many players would be very happy with 2 ranks of admin if they found their assets impounded for contravening some local law!

Pen/Sword . . .

I've run munchkin level games. Fine for one-shots. But lacking a real feel for the "Joy of Struggling" that characterizes so many of my traveller groups.

That being said, the real problem with IRIS CG is that it produces characters so far and above better than the other character generation methods.

If you like to play that way, fine, have fun. But GDW should have done a better job in ballancing the various CG extensions.

For the record, I'm against it. The game is going to be espionage based and so "spy" characters are being generated.

My proposed solution is to generate some characters using the Diplomat and Rogue CG because --- to me at least -- a "secret agent" is often a mixture of both skill groups.

SolSec is a bit lacking but is closer to the mark and the T-5 Agent character is closer to what I am looking for.

I really just want the artcles for 2 reasons --

to see the rationale behind all the special perks and training and as ammo to show the players how ludicrous the IRIS CG system is

I went digging and found my Challenge 34. Here’s a quick summary of the character generation system. Some of the characters you can make could probably go one-on-one against Max Payne, but munchkins will be munchkins, no matter what they start with...

I tried posting it, but the board just mushes the nicely tabbed-out tables to the left. I'll try emailling it to secretagent - if anyone wants a copy of the summary, post or email me.
