IISS Special (Combat) Rescue

Or, maybe the IISS security branch is more like Interpol?

Anyone?

I would say that mostly they are, but they do still have a small cadre of door-kickers, who are really for special projects, like grabbing their own from the clutches of Evil-doers. The Interpol hat nests well with their Intel functions. Essentially you have those doing law enforcement Intel, focused on interstellar connections of non-imperial violations.

Mostly, they just hook up either the locals, MoJ, IN, or subsection navy.

Originally the Imperial government starts at the subsector level.
But it reaches down to the individual worlds. The government of India started at the precidency/province level, but there were nevertheless plenty of lesser officials all over the place. (Also soldiers).

The whole internal autonomy thing does mean that the princely states are a closer analogy of the member worlds than districts administered directly by the British. (And even the the analogy only goes so far).

From a pure Traveller and explorer POV, I think the scouts, as scouts, that is as purely scouts, probably probe the empty space of the great rift, visit various gas giants and other bodies that no one else wants to go to (worlds like Mercury or Pluto) to grab data of all kinds. They probably catalog new craters, tectonic movements. volcanic events, weather changes, or perhaps the rare collision of celestial bodies.

That's in addition to running the mail all over the place.

They also probably probe the space surrounding the Vargr Extents, around Aslan, Hiver, K'Kree and Zho space, and wherever else.

I do think that they have a parallel function with the Imperial Marshals (I've actually not heard of them until someone mentioned them in this thread).

the way I see it, Marines rarely deploy in smaller than Platoon size (usually Company), and Army rarely deploys in less than Battalion size (usually Regiment or Division at least). Navy rarely deploys at all (and then usually no further than the Downport). MoJ needs to maintain a working relationship with the various world authorities (and thus usually seeks to maintain a certain level of "plausible deniability" where Ops outside of the Downport are concerned.) For more discrete situations, that leaves the Scouts/IISS. For REALLY discrete situations, there is Imperial Intelligence....

and for hopeless situations, there are PC's

;)

Hm. I'd slot Commandos in at Squad size deployments (and up, of course, as per the others), though primarily for cases where slightly less discretion is required than would call for the IISS.

I've always had it that the scouts probably help a little in special ops on occasion; insertion and extraction with the cover that they are a scout ship, when all the while they're picking up the Imperium equivalent of SEAL team-5 or something.

Book 6 explicitly notes that role.

The Security Branch is charged with providing security and law enforcement for the Scout Service. Security Branch Scouts serve as police enforcers on Scout property, as commandos or shipboard light troops, for special Scout activities, and as clandestine agents for Intelligence Branch. Agents of the llSS Security Branch have great authority to arrest, detain, or question individuals suspected of violations of lmperial law, and can demand cooperation from local authorities as the need arises.

They are the most feared LE force in Known Space. Fish & Game.

... given the large number of low-pop garden worlds that presumably harbor significant ecosystems that imperial nobility may wish to preserve, that might indeed be a huge writ of authority and action.

a great role for scouts. wilderness living, poacher confrontation, interception of captured/exported prohibited species, dangerous animals loose in-hull ....

that sounds like great gaming.

The Imperium has the Ministry of Conservation for looking after those garden worlds - they make IISS spec ops look like Girl Guides :)

In my TU I have the Imperial Marshals. Specifically selected to be incorruptible and dedicated to the Law. They have the power to arrest anyone short of the Emperor himself.
