I need drugs! Gimme drugs!

SuSAG establishes operations on Tarsus, processing Tarsuline, an important ingredient in the manufacture of psionic drugs, and impossible to produce synthetically

Gasses
Morph Gas sleep gas
blind gas Temporarily paralyzes the optic nerve
Tear gas

MemWipe
A powerful memory altering drug. it can remove the memories of the user for approximately 24 - 72 hours. It is rare and hard to find. When it can be found it is very expensive.

Afinajo Fungus
The afinajo fungus, native to the Buagki system(Corridor), reproduces by means of minute spores
The spores act as a powerful psychotropic agent on both humans and Vargr with unpredictable results highly dependent upon the individual user
Afinajo spores have been put to many uses and SuSAG is currently attempting to synthesize a variant of the fungus’ psychoactive compound to
make a drug to combat mental illness.
Military agencies are rumored to use afinajo fungi in biological warfare
Illegal ā€˜najo inhalers have been used for decades, to the annoyance of sector law enforcement personnel.
The Travellers’ Aid Society found afinajo spores sufficiently dangerous to declare Buagki an amber zone.

Borloi
Plant derived narcotic, grows on small spiny bushes. In it's pure form it is highly addictive. Regulated within the Imperium, as well as on many individual worlds/systems.
A derivative of the borloi alkali is the active ingredient in dope sticks, as well as the commonly available tranquilizer soma.

Caterpillar Delight
A rather serious hallucinegenic. The drug is recognizable by it's purple color with a yellow squiggle.

Cracknip
A powdered derivative of the yellow borloi, this drug is highly addictive for Aslans. Effects include euphoria, increases sexual desire, increased strength and reduced fatigue. Long term use results in impotence and lassitude. Normally inhaled through the nostrils, it has no effect on other races except occasional nausea.

Crystal Blue Persuasion
AKA Blue Ice, Glow Bug, Felicity or CBP:
A highly addictive drug, strictly prohibited on most worlds.
A bluish-white, tasteless, crystalline drug that is taken orally. It dissolves easily in water, so it may be added to drinks or food.
Currently, CBP distribution seems to be limited to a handful of worlds in the Five Sisters subsector. Imperial authorities have not made a concentrated effort to track down the source of the drug, relying on local authorities to handle the situation.
This may change if the use of CBP begins to spread afield.
CBP causes a feeling of euphoria and confidence that leaves the user more susceptible to suggestions (-2 to resist casual suggestions; -5 to resist Fast-Talk or Sex Appeal rolls; doubles the effectiveness of hypnotism).
CBP takes effect within two minutes of ingestion and lasts for 1d6 hours, after which the user will become depressed and exhausted (END-3 to keep from falling asleep for 2d6 hours).
While under the influence of CBP, users may take other drugs or drink large amounts of alcohol without suffering any of the usual effects, including hangovers
Regular use decreases the effectiveness of the drug, requiring larger doses to achieve the same results. After 1d6 doses, the effects last 1d6-1 hours (no less than 1 hour) and the user will need to make a END roll to avoid acquiring a Minor Addiction. After 1d6/2 more doses, the effectiveness decreases to around 1 hour per dose, and the user will need to make a END-5 roll to avoid acquiring a Major Addiction
For information regarding breaking addictions and withdrawal symptoms, see the GURPS Basic Set, p. 30.
Players do not get points for an addiction acquired through use of this drug.
CBP is thought to be difficult to manufacture, and production seems to be controlled by a single organization of unknown origin.
CBP varies in cost depending on availability. A single dose (1g) costs between Cr30 and Cr100.

Dope Stick
Any of a variety of ubiquitous, mildly euphoric and flavored smokables. Although psychologically addictive, they are not physically so; they contain no tobacco.

Dust Spice
Harvested from the bark of the geki bush, dustspice is a euphoria-inducing spice used recreationally throughout Charted Space. In humans, the effect is similar thing to alcohol but in other species, notably the Aslan and Vargr, it is a particularly powerful euphoric. The most valuable dustspice is harvested on Romar (Glisten subsector, the Spinward Marches) but it can also be found on Keanou (Lanth subsector) and a few other systems
Dust-spice from Keanou(Lanth) can be found sold at Rhylanor, Regina, Roup, Zivije, or Rethe for Cr10,000 per kilogram (plus 2D times Cr1,000).

Aslan Spice Dens are found wherever significant Aslan populations are present. They are the inevitable consequence of the widespread consumption of dustspice.
Contrary to expectations, they are not seedy establishments, but convivial restaurants and bars serving "dustspice enhanced" food. Their communal, clan-detached nature have slowly increased the importance of spice dens into full blown unofficial meeting places.

If a male needs associates, or to discreetly get something from another clan, a dustspice den is where they'd go. Instead of asking where an Aslan would set up meetings, it may be better to ask which spice den they frequent? The Dens have been heavily compared to the old cafƩs of the renaissance on ancient Terra, and there are certainly parallels. Though the dens are far less prone to intellectual conversation unless talking about close quarters combat techniques, military tactics or epic poetry. Spice dens primarily cater to Aslan but the Credits of other species are worth the same and they are often far less affected by the spice, and less likely to cause a scene.

There are some female equivalents, but they tend to be overshadowed by their rowdier counterparts. They are quiet, dignified affairs where deals can decide the economic future of whole worlds. Female spice dens are technologically sophisticated, using automated staff and electronic systems at every possible opportunity, contrary to their male oriented counterparts, where technology is generally shunned, and one could believe themselves back on preflight Kusyu if not for the pile of laser and gauss guns behind the reception desk.

Part 2
Frenzy
A form of war drug that induces a berzerker state and requires two stats to be reduced to zero before the user is rendered unconscious. The user also experiences a large boost of Strength, Dexterity and Endurance for the duration of the dosage. Use of this drug is also fatal. It is therefore mostly illegal, rare and expensive.
It's use is mostly confined to suicide missions and religious fanatics

Jumble
A high tech drug that effects memory. Causing confusion

Jurian Mist
An orange-spice, mildly narcotic tea.

KillAlc
A pharmaceutical that nullifies the effect of alcohol. Can be taken before or after, but tends to have the side effect of severe heartburn.

Rak-rak:
The government of Jesedipere isn't waiting to see what other worlds are doing about rak-rak; it's moving ahead with plans to stop what it sees as an emerging drug trade.
The black market is eager to take advantage, willing to sneak rak-rak supplies in. The name Rak-rak is a Galanglic-corrupted version of its Vargr name. Rak-rak is a chewy, jerky-like treat enjoyed across the Vargr Extents.
Most Humans find it unpalatable, but some have cultivated a taste for it. In Humans, rak-rak causes a mild narcotic reaction.
Debate is ongoing among Imperial authorities as to whether or not the substance should be considered controlled as a result.

ReGen
A high tech drug that promotes rapid healing and regeneration of tissues.

Robac
A artificial non-addictive substitute for tobacco. Used by both smoking or chewing. It is a mild stimulant.

Stygian Bliss
A rare and much sought after tea derived from a lichen native to Cunnonic/Darrian. The tea is made from the buds of the lichen, budding
occurring every 11 years. The buds are then fermented over a period of 3 years, then dried. The infusion from the tea is euphoric,
invigorating, and increases clarity of thought. Unfortunately, the tea is also toxic if taken in more than small quantities. Death from Stygian
Bliss results from slow failure of the autonomic nervous system, even as the thought processes are accelerated and expanded.

Zh'a Cha'a (Phonetic: "Zuh-ha Chah-ah'")
Definition: "Lick the Lizard" slang, meaning "dumb thing to do", "a waste of time."
Zh'a cha'a are small, generally green lizards with sucker feet giving off mucus have psychotropic effects.
The psychotropic agent refined from the enzymes causes severe kidney damage while it takes the user on a ride
Frazzled drug users may lick a lizard, but real abusers take it in using a refined extract from the toxin and the drug is totally addictive
People trying to get "off the lizard" will be less rational than normal, and thus harder to deal with.

POISONS
Tetramine is a deadly toxin that was almost impossible to detect in an autopsy

A possible hard-to-detect poison that could be found in hyper-arctic conditions is a toxin produced by strains
of psychrophilic bacteria
An example is a compound called Cryopeptide, a small peptide shown to be toxic to various organisms
including humans. It's highly resistant to cold temperatures and remains active at temperatures as low as -20°C
A scenario where exposure to cryopeptide is by consuming contaminated food or water
If the bacteria producing cryopeptide were present and contaminated a food source (fish or seal meat) the diner
could potentially be poisoned.
Cryopeptide is a relatively small and simple peptide, that is hard to detect with standard toxicology tests, but
advances in analytical chemistry and proteomics may change that

IMTU: "Teecy" -- a widely-used club drug; a mild stimulant and psychadelic. Tends to make users feel energetoc and emotionally connected to fellow party-goers. That is, that's the overt description....

In actuality, it's a cut-down mix of Combat drug and Psi Booster. ("Tele - Combat" -> TC). The apparent psychadelic effects are actually psionic effects,, either telepathy or clairvoyance/clairaudience, misintepreted by untrained/unknowing users.

It's the Traveller SF version of "Ecstacy".

These are some of the notable drugs IMTU.

Archydiphorozene = Heart rate enabler; increases cardiac ā€˜stability’ in Humans, i.e. ā€˜sets’ heart rate to a steady beat.

Lestaphorin R = (No-Tox) Anti-Intoxicant; prevents intoxication when taken before imbibing, cures same when taken afterwards.

ā€œSongbirdā€ = An illegal, euphoria inducing drug, usually burned/heated and vapors/smoke ingested, causing an intense feeling of well-being, and communicative behavior. Extremely addictive. Phlange 1008 Godrippe.

ā€œFit-bitā€ =A small disposable (worn on wrist) auto injector that dispenses periodic doses of a mild sedative/analgesic used to relieve un-modified clones of their ability to produce pheromones. 2 doses/day for one week.

Hi,
I like this idea and wonder how you see it working?
Is it a range-based narcotic which "soothes" the heart-muscle to reduce its activity by a percentage - hence the range?
Is it a device which "eats" the bio-electric charge the autonomic nervous system uses to "spark" the heart, to reduce muscle reaction, thereby reducing the muscle action - giving "finer tuned" control?

Is it something else entirely?

I am interested in your idea and would enjoy knowing more

Sponge: 1000% addictive drug / food additive that turns anyone who ingests some into a mindless, violent, zombie. Banned virtually everywhere. SuSAG makes it in several of their black ops facilities for governments who are into questionable things. Weaponized by several governments. Possession is often a death sentence.

Euphoria: The "Happy pill." Makes you so happy you just want to sit there being happy. Users are often called "Grinning idiots."

Synphoria: A highly effective aphrodisiac that heightens the experience and can cause infatuation and have a hypnotic effect on the user. Very addicting. Works best if the user finds someone already sexually attractive to them. Can be found as a liquid or pill. Effective enough that it is often illegal.

Noxolox: A powerful hallucinogen that makes the user believe they are in a world of their own fantasies. Creates waking, visual dreams as part of the hallucination process.

Impatrixa: A work drug. The user can perform heavy manual labor for hours, even days, without stopping. Induces docility and obedience. Blocks higher reasoning and brain functions. Someone on this cannot do complex problem solving or thinking for example. Used on worlds where slave labor and the like are practiced. Ages the worker at several times normal rates. Workers using it non-stop have been known to work themselves to death.

while not a drug, Larry Niven has "wireheads" where they could directly apply voltage to the pleasure centers of the brain. Most died from that as they would just keep pressing the button (hmm, and I see certain parallels with social media feeds but that will devolve into the pit pretty quickly)

I can see this though as a way for nefarious people to control others if they have the button.

That would be the Puppeteers. They had the Tasp which is essentially that, only it stimulates the pleasure center remotely.

I don't know if we made this up, or if it was mentioned in one of the books. But the idea was using the tasp on a random person in a park. You send them into a state a perfect euphoria, and then stop. They experience it, but won't ever experience it again, and it has a short- to mid-term effect of deep depression as they try to chase it.

Sounds like an electronically indued mid-life crisis :D
LOL
If he's in Portland next week, I'll ask Larry about the remote part?

It's in the books. In Ringworld Nessus, the Puppeteer has an implanted tasp for use on others and also an implanted variant that triggers pain.

But the use in a park was in Ringworld Engineers when Louis is explaining why he became a wirehead. He was feeling depressed, was walking in a park when someone hit him with a tasp (as I recall he said it was much weaker than Nessus') and the sudden kick and reminder of what Nessus had been like just made his depression worse, so he got the wire.

SJG's JTAS Online ran an article: Seven Vices for Hard-Living Travellers, by Michael Brown, which described several drugs.
JTAS Online isn't online anymore (!), but IIRC there's an archive of it you can buy (from FFE?).

DRUGS
  • BOOST: [Cr 400; TL 9] Increases STR and END by +1 each per injection that lasts for 30 minutes.
  • BIOFOAM: [Cr 10; TL 8] A temporary wound treatment that provides +2d6 virtual StDxEn per injection that lasts for 1 hour. At the end of the hour, the temporary StDxEn are subtracted and the damage is restored (which may instantly kill the person).
  • Blackroot: [Cr 150/dose] This lichen grows on large rocks and boulders found above timberline (the elevation at which trees do not have enough oxygen to grow). When chewed on, it causes the user to have a pleasant, tingling sensation of the lips, tongue, and gums. As well, it can give the user a sense of mental sharpness and alertness. If swallowed, it causes nausea and vomiting if the user fails an END check. If used for 1d6 hours continuously, the user must make an END check. If failed, they experience nausea, but if passed they gain +1 INT for the next 6 hours. Not inherently addictive, though if used for 2D6 days in a row, the user will feel extremely groggy if they do not use it every morning.
  • Code Blue [psi]: [Cr 100/dose] The nickname for ā€œBRKW-7QL4ā€, a drug that is both a powerful neurotransmitter booster and a deadly toxin. Immediately upon injection (and every 10 minutes thereafter), the character suffers damage to STR, DEX, and END (1d6: 1-3 = 1 point, 4-5=2 points, 6=3 points) until the drug is neutralized. Each 10 minutes of use, the character gains 1 point of PSR and each Psi-Talent functions at +1 level. [for untrained Psions, roll 12+ on 2d6 to activate a talent with +1 for each Code Blue Psi Boost … ie. roll 2d6+1 at start, 2d6+2 after 10 minutes, etc.] The Character must roll HIGHER than their PSR on 2d6 to quit due to the euphoric effect of the drug. Antidote = Cr 30/dose.
  • Panacea: [Cr 50; TL 6] A general collection of drugs used to treat wounds and diseases found in MEDICAL KITS. This contains enough ā€œpanaceaā€ for 100 Medic-0 skill checks or 10 Medic-1 skill checks or 1 Medic-2 skill check.
  • Patch [psi]: [Cr 300/dose] A small packet containing a pinch of herbs (like chewing tobacco). The powder swishes and clings instantly forming crystals, then breaks at the slightest touch only to reform into new crystals. Patch dissolves under the tongue and expands all of the senses. For a ā€œTelepathā€, it boosts your effective level by 1 and grants the ability to communicate with plants and animals. Lasts 1d6+1 hours. Upon coming down, it leaves the user feeling physically exhausted [-1 STR, -1 DEX, -1 END] until sleep. At next 8-hour sleep (roll 2d6 for END/2 or less), pass= wake normal; fail = even more tired [-2 STR, -2 DEX, -2 END] until next 8-hour sleep (then wake normal).
  • Pipeweed: [Cost Cr 20 for 5 minutes worth of weed.] Dried and smoked in a pipe, it makes the mind both sharper and duller at the same time; making it easy to retain facts [+2 EDU] but hard to concentrate on abstract reasoning [-2 INT] while smoking it. The effects persist for 2D6 hours after the user stops smoking.
