Foundation - Adapting Traveller

I was rereading Asimovs Foundation Novel, it seems it would make an excellent Traveller setting. The Jump Drives a little different:
"Through hyper-space, that unimaginable region that was neither space not time, matter nor energy, something nor nothing, one could traverse the length of the Galaxy in the interval between two neighboring instants of time."
One could, but apparently one doesn't, because later in the book when Salvor Hardin talks to Pirenne:
"Have you heard the news? questioned Hardin phlegmatically.
"What news?"
"The news that Terminus City ultrawave set received two hours ago. The Royal Governor of the Prefect of Anacreon has assumed the title of king."
"Well? What of it?"
"It means," responded Hardin, "that we're cut off from the inner regions of the Empire. We've been expecting it, but that doesn't make it any more comfortable. Anacreon stands square across what was our last remaining trade route to Santanni and to Trantor and to Vega itself. Wher is our metal to come from? We haven't managed to get steel or aluminum shipments through in six months and now we won't be able to get any at all, except by the grave of the King of Anacreon."
If the jump drive could really traverse the Galaxy in two neighboring instants of time, it would be impossible for Terminus to be cut off. Apparently in theory its possible to do this, but in practice, it would require tremendous amounts of energy to travel galaxy spanning distances in one jump, so therefore travel occurs in smaller jumps, say 1 to 6 parsecs. Later on we find out that Anacreon has no nuclear power, much less fusion, their starships are chemically powered. Put all this together and we have the modifications we need for the Traveller Jump Drive to operate in the Foundation Universe. First the Jump fuels requirements in tonnage stays the same for a given jump, but the jump fuel is different, instead of using hydrogen as a jump fuel, the jump drives uses the same tonnage in the form of hydrogen and oxygen in separate tanks. The hydrogen and oxygen are run through the jumpdrive's fuel cell and the energy is stored in capacitors for instantaneous release to initiate the jump. As soon as the jump starts, the starship is there, 1 to 6 parsecs away. The same rules apply for distances from gravitational bodies. Lets say it also takes about 1 hour for the fuel cells to run all the hydrogen and oxygen through itself to build up the necessary charge for the jump. That means every hour, the starship can make another jump into hyperspace provided it has the necessary separated hydrogen and oxygen. The starship ends up with water when it uses up all of its fuel. The starship could then dive toward the sun and use solar collectors to separate the water back into hydrogen and oxygen for further jumps, this might take a day. Of particular interest would be the giant stars for travelling long distances as these shed alot of light, so you don't have to go too deep into their gravitational wells to get their energy. Gas giants lose their strategic importance since you can only obtain free hydrogen from them, the oxygen would have to be obtained by separation from other chemicals, but it is easier to get it by recycling the water from previous jumps made.

A fission reactor would allow jumps of 10 to 60 parsecs in distance.

A fusion reactor would allow jumps of 100 to 600 parsecs.

The area around Terminus would count as a rift for Traveller purposes with paths of stars that allow for 1 to 6 parsec jumps along certain routes.

The people of Terminus have access to fission reactors so some of their starships can make jumps of tens of parsecs, the trouble is, they would need to refuel their reactors and get rid of the nuclear waste, the second is easy in space but the first is harder as it requires processed uranium as much of the perifery has lost nuclear power, processed Uranium may be hard to find.

Then there is fusion, the fusion reactors of the Foundation are huge, it isn't mentioned in the book, but it most be if fusion is available since otherwise the people of Terminus would have too much of an advantage over its neighbors and wouldn't worry about them. Captial ships would have fusion generators, these are the ships that are used for traveling across the galaxy. Smaller ships can do it in smaller jumps, but it would take longer.

Foundation was strange on the point of metals, fissionables, and fusion power in far future technology. It is a milieu shaped to allow the central premise of psychohistory&#133

Asimov was usually very careful about his science, but the power differences between fission and chemical is so huge that realism would've spoiled the plot line.

The adventures with the merchant prince visiting the old imperial provincial capitial shows whats happened. They have regressed and forgotten how to repair their equipment. they have lost the theoretical knowledge and are replacing parts with like parts and relying on the inherent reliability of the equipment.

I imagine the 4 provinces have taken all their spares for military use, leaving none for the normal infrastructure. The planet is now dependent upon oil and gas, whilst the fleet uses the last of the fusion plant spares, with crews using half remembered maintenance routines and no real knowledge of what they are doing. A bit like the collapse and the new era.

I would think the biggest problem would be faster that light comms. Slavor hardin uses an ultrawave signal to disable that battlecruiser threatening terminus. Salvor hardin's speech shows that Terminus is training the local priests with distorted technical information, and obviously the locals have forgotten this knowledge.

Cheers

I stand corrected on the state of nuclear technology in the Foundation. Apparently they have small scale fission and fusion. In Part IV The Traders, Ponyets impresses the local ruler by turning an iron belt buckle into gold, that requires fusion of a sort. In the Foundation, nuclear reactors are in everything, they have nucleo-bulbs to shed illumination. A common personal side-arm is the atomic blaster, in Traveller Parlance I'd use the Fusion Gun and call it an atomic blaster in this setting, fusion is a form of atomic energy. Another item of technology is the personal nuclear dampner that Salvor Harden uses when Weinis fires the atomic blaster at him. I think after further reading, their are two kinds of power sources, the chemical power plant and the atomic reactor. The atomic reactor is a combo fission/fusion reactor. In otherwords it can do both. If you give it Uranium it can split the atoms, if you give it hydrogen, it can fuse those atoms. These reactors can be very small and are in household appiances. Perhaps they use tiny force fields to contain the radiation. As for the Jump Drive modification, jump drives can make 1 jump an hour, using up their chemical (Hydrogen/Oxygen) jump fuel in about 1 week, this means a Jump-1 drive can travel 168 parsecs with a single load of chemical fuel and a week and a jump-6 drive can go 1008 parsecs. This seems like more than enough for the outer edge of the Galaxy. It should take about 33 weeks to reach the center of the Galaxy from Terminus at Jump-6. If one wants to map the area around Terminus, you could uses a subsector grid with hexs 150 parsecs across.

I remember a part where the trader had to spend 2 weeks rescuing an associate 50 parsecs away with about a week spent on each leg of the journey. If we require that medium-sized starships between 100 and 1000 tons spent 3 hours between jumps, then a jump-1 starship would take a week to go 56 parsecs. this sounds about right for a Free Trader. A Large Starship, 1000 to 10000 tons can recharge their jump drives ever hour due to efficiencies of scale, these would be used in long haul journeys across the Galaxy.

BTW, for those that are interested in the Foundation novels...Dragon once did a special on Traveller/Foundation called the Asimov cluster.

Issue #28, page 20 is the article on the Asimov Cluster. I looked it up in my CD Rom Archive. The UWP of Terminus is:

Terminus A665683-9 Ag 100
"Terminus is a smaller earthlike planet with a shortage of heavy elements and fertile soil. It is the home of the Encyclopedia Foundation whose mission is to retian and preserve the scientific knowledge of the old Empire. It is controlled by a popularly elected Mayor and has only one major population center which the starport is nearby. No major predators known. It is not at this time a major military power."

I think the tech level 9 is too low, this means that they only have Jump-1 capabilities and have no grav vehicles. The atomic blasters (Fusion guns) they have are at least TL 14. Since it is a storehouse of the Galaxy's knowledge I'd put it at the Imperial Maximum TL 15. The government is listed as a Civil Service Bureaucracy, this pin points the era at or before the year 30 FE when the Encyclopediasts are in control and before Salvor Hardin's coup and the first Seldon Crises. The typical starship can make 1 jump every 3 hours and jumps are instantaneous. Since this planet is at the edge of intergalactic space and the stars are far apart, this comes in very handy.
My guess is that Terminus is a very young terraformed planet that has a weak magnetic field and gravity at about 0.4 g to reflect its low density.
