DGP and all that

Roger Sanger had nothing to do with the development of the DGP material. He merely bought all of the rights to it when DGP closed its doors.

My bad. But, like you said, he owns the rights to the property.

Sorry for my confusion on Traveller history

He can't without a license from Marc. Marc has discussed a license with him previously but Roger was unwilling to meet Marc's terms.

Obviously this has more of a story behind it than it sounded at the beginning.

Any way, If the powers that be ask (and tell me the details) I will offer to help where I can.

I make no promises that any good will come of anything that I do.

What is left from DGP anyway. To me they were the ultimate traveller producers, better ultimately in defining the game than even than GDW, but all the nuggets of gold from their work is common knowledge via these boards, so unless the Black Duke and the Omnnesium Quest are actually written adventures, the whole DGP thing is over.

So lets play traveller!

Hunter,

What are Marc's terms? If I ever get around to those small projects, like a Best of the Small Presses or resurrect the Ancients Project, I would want to know some of the ground rules before commencing.

And, I am largely a product of the MegaTraveller era and sadly this means that I am also one who believes DGP defined Traveller by taking those masterful broad strokes that GDW created (except in JTAS where lots of interesting work was done) and fill them in dynamic full color 3D.

But, I also see Quicklink doing the same function taking the universe and building an even better product from it.

See, the real problem with a licensed derivative IP is that, should your license be revoked and the terms thereof not say otherwise, you suddenly have a USELESS IP, unless you sell that IP to either the holder of the source IP, another of their extant licensees, or are sufficiently derivative as to be a wholly separate IP, or the whole of the derivative is done for comedic intent.

a change in media doesn't create a difference in the IP for purposes of determining derivation... although in some odd situations (Lyric sheets vs score vs performance recording vs midi file, for example) variations in media may be derivatives of each other AND the source...

Since it is clear that the IP of the DGP materials was not only derivative, but also subject to terminable license, Roger has a lot of useless data he purchased. Useless, that is, to everyone except QLI, SJG and MWM.

A word on unpublished DGP material: If it was never published, it doesn't exist. One of the financial reasons DGP went under was because it had to pay termination costs to writers of products it couldn't afford to produce. Also, a number of products were also started only to be junked once they got into the hands of DGP because the writers and publisher were not on the same, ahem, sheet.

Sorry, there is no hoarde of never published manuscripts out there just waiting to be released.
