DGP and all that

A word on unpublished DGP material: If it was never published, it doesn't exist. One of the financial reasons DGP went under was because it had to pay termination costs to writers of products it couldn't afford to produce. Also, a number of products were also started only to be junked once they got into the hands of DGP because the writers and publisher were not on the same, ahem, sheet.

Sorry, there is no hoarde of never published manuscripts out there just waiting to be released.

I ask again then- why the adverts for the'forthcoming' Omnesium Quest in one of the Megatraveller Jourals?Something must have been commited to paper for them to start plugging it surely?

No. Palladium Books, one of the top 5 RPG companies, seems to routinely list some books almost as soon as somebody comes up with the idea. DGP was far from PB's size. I think the software term is "vaporware" * .

"Something" may be nothing more than an idea, a concept cover sketch or even finished artwork, an outline...

Casey

* Like Palladium Books having Mechanoid Space or Modern Recon (among others) for preorder for a couple of years to a decade or more. Or LUG's adverts for the Mirror, Mirror, Movie Era, and Klingon books, Chaosium's Pulp Cthulhu, etc. .

In short, no.

DGP tried to keep to what amounted to a production schedule, they knew that a manuscript was due in by date X for publication by date Y. They advertised that Onessium Quest will come out on date Y. However, when the manuscript came in, they found it wasn't what they wanted/expected and they get into a lot of back and forth with the author and time drags on. The manuscript problems are never resolved to DGP's satisfaction and so the book is never published.

In my experience, it's not uncommon for RPG companies miss deadlines.

Has anyone bothered even to ask Sanger what exactly he possess? In what form and what work needs to be done for the unpublished stuff?

I think most of think that it must be a fabulous cache but for the most part it probably a much of incomplete txt files. Soon the software will be unreadable by most machines...

I don't think he has a great deal. I have the World Builder's Handbook, the Referee's Screen, and the Vilani-Vargr Alien modual. I sold off an adventure modual that was somewhat of a campaign book, involving taking down a pirate base on an asteroid. I don't think there's too much more beyond that. I saw a list of DGP-MT products on some game list website. There were something like nearly twenty some odd books in all published... at least that's what I recall.

A lot of it was interesting, but essentially just reiterations of stuff already published.

Ah, looking at my bookshelf I see I also have a "Vehicle Guide" by them. That was a good book. I liked a lot of the art inside along with the vehicle descriptions. It's a neat little publication, but given the material provided in CT there's nothing in it that couldn't be conjured by the players and GM.

Ah, another glance at my book shelf reveals a something called "The Early Adventures." Again, there's nothing here that the players couldn't create for themselves. There's a floor plan for an X-boat tender, and one for a "Long Liner" (1000 ton liner), no new devices, and borderline art (the interior stuff looks like it was put through a cheap art program for a Mac).

It's all neat stuff, but there's really nothing here that's not covered in other books. And if T5 ever comes to be then the DGP material only gains sentimental value.

Hmmm... six figures suddenly sounds rediculously high

Actually, I'd pay for layouts of some of the vehicles inside DGP's vehicle guide. Particularly the Gasheda undersea ATV, Tiamat Mining Crawler, Sans Souci Grav Yacht, and Zeff Grav Cargo Transport.

I also have some serious questions about the size comparisons for some of the armor. In particular the Aslan fire support vehicles, the Empress APC, and a couple of the Grav Tanks. They just simply look too small to be able to accomodate a crew of anykind. Conversely the Lagerhedd AFV looks massive compared to the tanks I've been around. I'm glad there're size comparisons for various vehicles. I like the figures drawn next to the vehicles to give me some visual reference as to what they're like, but some of the military stuff looks out of scale.

Just me
