CDRom Project News

Hunter--- should we expect the CD ROM this quarter, next quarter, next year? Just curious if you have any sort of timeline in mind for availability.

I can't wait to get my hands on this product.

I'm not trying to be pushy (I hope that it doesn't come off that way).

I think OCRed PDFs are the way to go. There are PDF readers for almost every platform out there.

There are PDF creators as well, so if it is in a different format, as long as I can print it, I can make a PDF from it. Not sure about the searchable PDFs if it is in bitmap format.

Custom EXE, why not make it in Java? Does Java exist for the Palm yet?

There are so many Traveller helper programs out there, and they are either in Windows EXE, DOS EXE, MacOS 8.X binary, Linux ELF, or some other format. It would be nice if the official MegaTraveller CD supported as many platforms as possible.

Our dear departed original GM, willed his Traveller collection to me. Including a lot of MegaTraveller books. Provided that I share them with the group. I have, but in the past people have done things like rip out parts of the MegaTraveller Player's Manual that tells how much equipment or weapons cost, or that have tables that generate characters. With PDFs or printable formats, I can print out those pages for them to take home and roll up characters and equip them. That is an acceptable use, right? I mean not the whole book, just the parts they need to roll up characters before the game starts. The people who ripped up the books and didn't return the pages (I would have gladly let them borrow the book if they promised to return it) are no longer with our group.

Orion: the main reason for no java would be the incompatible filesystems out there. It is doable, but not easily so.

Not all filesystems mount drives in the same relative spots. since the majority of uses use Win__, a win .exe file is the most useful.

Torques me off, but is most widely accepted.

PDFs are very nice. I vote PDF.

Laird: Yes, it's still happening. The people in charge are juggling many balls at once, so everything gets a small timeslice.

Loyal: I don't know what the timeline is, either. I hope it's ready sometime this year. I imagine there might be only one person doing the scanning (Marc), which means the project is on a long schedule with everything else.

Orion: I believe running off copies of tables and forms for your players is acceptable use.

I thought the scans had come back already and they were putting it together ? (or am I thinking of another product).

Will dig through the previous posts - if I was wrong I will be so bummed.

Am really looking forward to the CD. - being able to run off the maps from the Ref Companion or the Character Creation tables will make a referee's job SO much easier.

Marc just got the MT product pdfs back from the company handling the scans.

[...]

He has to organize the structure of the CD and then he'll hand it over to me to design the CD interface. After that it should be available for sale.

<shrugs> If you just want to run off a few charts from the core books for now you could just buy them from DTRPG or scan in a few pages from your own books (assuming you own the core rules already).
