Canon?

Who are you, and what have you done with Bill?

I call them as I see them. I've pointed out the good, the bad, and the ugly in every version of Traveller since CT. If you go back and actually read my posts, you'll learn what my opinions really are.

Question for the Mods: Now that Mr. Miller own COTI, what are the policies regarding paid shills?

Regards,
Bill

*checks for small redish diamond tatoo on the back of B-2's neck*

Looks for a scar at the base of the skull or under the eyelids...
Been playing Burning Empires, which is in Moeller's Iron Empires, itself inspired by traveller....

I've played it a couple of time now and read through the major books. Overal, a good system. Some of the things I don't like? It has squirrelly vehicle design system and parts of the ship design system don't make sense compared to itself or, the MT system (better ship design system IMO)

But, pretty good effort overall. Can't wait to see what T5 is going to look like.

As a paid shiller, I second this question. what is the new policy?
If anything new.

That's beyond my clearance level ;)

I'd guess the question is still being pondered. Until then I suppose it's business as usual per rule 7 (substituting Marc for Hunter). Typically it goes through the Latest TAS News approval and gets front page billing once a mod checks the box and clicks the button.

Until Andrew or Avery posts otherwise, business as usual.

No advocacy of pirated works.
No advocacy of pirating works.

Commercial shills (like dmccoy's) are fine in the announcements area (TAS News Feed), and I'll continue approve them as long as the links work right. Elsewhere, they are still spam.

I think Marc's happy with Mongoose Traveller. After all, when MGT does well, he benefits, as does Traveller in general. So I'd think that MGT product advertisement is fine here.

Actual shills - ie paid to help sell a product whilst denying any connection to the seller - are banned. As is publicly accusing someone of being one. As long as you make any connection clear I'm happy.

Adverts should be in the TAS News Feed, but I don't object to version-specific ones being copied to the relevant forums.

:alpha: Andrew, this thread brings up a question that applies mostly (at this point) to me specifically, but a clarification would still be useful...

Should I be posting announcements of new issues of Freelance Traveller in the TAS Feed, in the Lone Star, somewhere else (if so, where?), or some combination of the above?
:omega:

I think that the secret is that there are many flavors of Traveller. Once you pick one, then you can determine what is "canon" for that flavor.

For example, if I'm a CT guy then I might scoff at the notion that MGT is canon since it won't match my '77 rulebooks. If I'm a MGT guy then I might scoff at the notion that CT is canon since it has clearly been superceded with revised rules to correct earlier errors.

It's all a "point of view" thing.

For any given flavor, the "core rules" or "boxed set" is typically considered to be canon and any magazine articles, adventures, supplement books, and so on are optional.

Andrew,

Then let me suggest a slight change that will keep us all happy.

Anyone can create a membership with "Mongoose" or "T4" or "CT" as part of their User Name, so merely identifying yourself as "Mongoose Matt" of "MongooseFordy" clearly isn't enough "truth in advertising" as anyone can be "MongooseMoe", "MongooseLarry", or "MongooseCurly".

Members of COTI who are also employees of firms selling products to COTI members should be clearly identified as such. With that information in hand, other members can then decide whether any given post is a personal opinion or a company policy.

You have a subtitle with your User Name, The Adminator, mods and moot members have subtitles with their User Names, and employees of companies can easily identified with subtitles too.

Bill

Bill...

Under your system, what would I be considered?

And be nice with the response...

Don,

You're a moderator, it says so right on the tin, so your status is known to anyone who reads your name.

The board is looking at making new people feel comfortable here, right? Someone new to the game isn't going to know who everyone is. In the past I've seen people ask who Loren is on other boards and have seen people ask who "Avery" is here.

If you're an employee of a company selling products, you should be identified as such. It's only fair and it will help new people find their way. We explain the many acronyms used in these threads, we explain the various Moot "titles", and we should explain who's selling stuff too.

Bill

Don:
Under such a scheme, dmcoy would get a "TLL Publisher Rep" group membership, as would Grufty. Matt would tell us who to include in the "Mongoose Publishing" group. Loren would get the "Ancient" and you and robject might wind up with "Sons of the Ancients"

Under such a scheme, dmcoy would get a "TLL Publisher Rep" group membership, as would Grufty.

Might I suggest "Traveller Compatible Publisher Rep" or "Traveller Compatible/Foreven Publisher Rep" instead. TLL, while accurate, can be confusing to the uninitiated.

Can I also suggest "Grand Poobah" or "Grand Moff" instead of "Rep" for Grufty and myself (and other compatible publishers). (this one is only meant in silliness, not an actual suggestion)

This is why we set up a "Spica Publishing" user account - it only gets used for when we need to post stuff about products. Personally, if I come here as "Gruffty" then that's who I am - me. If I want to plug SP stuff, I'll use the SP account to do that.

Is this really necessary?

If so, should we require that people with other agendas be identified with titles as well?

Eg 'Raging Canonista' or 'Fervent TNE-Hater' tags that will allow us to identify when an otherwise innocuous post by a poster we don't recognise might have an underlying purpose?

For my money, if people associated with Traveller publishers want to make a personal post in a discussion about kitchen appliances of the third imperium, that's no big deal.

Maybe if there was a history of publishers pretending to be fans and raving about how great their work is, or maybe fans impersonating publishers*, then this would be worthwhile.... but it seems unlikely that's been happening.

* I mean other than by starting a company to publish game materials....
