Blue Darrians and Blue Skinned Vilani

The folks at Blizzard will be glad to know that ... ;)

Ruh-Roh! Katherine Kurtz might be interested ... ;)

Hers is different. Hers are "Deryni."

And what hath blizzard to do with Traveller? Nothing, far as I know... But Blue Daryen are likely to use a corruption or diminuation of Daryen. Dareni is different enough from Daryen to be distinguished, and the i tends to be either a plualizer &/or diminutive in many languages.

I think it was a joke, Wil. They're both blue, y'see.

Please! I like my Orion women green, my Romulan ale blue, and my Andorians...err....wait... I never liked Andorians.

I did... both the canonical blue ones, and the semi-canonical interpretations of them, and the wacky green ones that were up on the net in about '93...

I know it's a bit of a ressurection but...

...recently I've been reading and re-reading some old classic sci-fi stories. I was into the collected Med-Ship stories by Murray Leinster (not a bad read, much evidence of more of Traveller's roots throughout). Anyway, I was enjoying the ride, getting all kinds of ideas when in the story Pariah Planet I came across this...

"There is a landing grid," said Calhoun, frowning, "and if they're using it to load fresh meat for Dara, from the herds I'm told about, it should be manned. But they don't seem to intend to answer. Maybe they think that if they pretend I'm not here I'll go away."

He reflected, and his frown deepened.

"If I didn't know what I know, I might. So if I land on emergency rockets the blueskins down below may decide that I come from Weald. And in that case it would be reasonable to blast me before I could land and unload some fighting men. On the other hand, no ship from Weald would conceivably land without impassioned assurance that it was safe. It would drop bombs." He turned to the girl. "How many Darians down below?"
:oo:

woah woah woah!!!

Darians!

Up to that last sentence I'd read Dara as the name of the world a few or several times in the story. It didn't twig.

And I'd read that the people of Dara were blue skinned. Nope, that didn't twig either. Though to be fair the reasons are not what would seem to apply to Traveller.

And then I got to "How many Darians down below?" and it all clicked.

Anyway, I thought it was worth sharing a couple weeks ago, but didn't feel like digging up the topic I thought I recalled about Blue Darrians. Found it now so here you go.

A (THE?) source of Blue Darrians finally revealed :)

I bought the med ship series and invaders from space, old though, 1964 for the Invaders, the cover says 50 cents and I paid $4.50, oh well. :)

Sidetracked into Invaders right now.

Heh, I'd have bought it if I had a used book store handy. The last old paperback I bought was a copy of Starship Troopers, just for the cover art of the Rodger Young. I think I paid $8 for it, worth every penny :)

Just finished Invaders of Space, very trav-esque, ecxept for the overdrive, could even be a neat adventure; the book, though old is beautiful: classic old art and the edges of the paper are dyed red, in good condition. I found a basement filled with old sci-fi at a local bookstore.

Just read about the "blue-skins" of Dara, eg Darians, nice, there are some good ideas there that already fall in with what I have written with my Blue Darrians.

Another thread resurrection, but when I saw the thread title, what immediately popped into my head was the Murray Leinster story about the blue-skinned Darans of the planet Dara. For those interested in a good read, the novella can be found on Project Gutenberg under one of two titles: This World is Taboo or Pariah Planet. It is part of his Med Ship series of stories, some of which are on Project Gutenberg.

If you want a good idea for a Medic character, Med Ship Man Calhoun would be very hard to beat. A doctor with a mean hand with a blaster, or nasty bugs.
